The reason scoring is up is because basketball is fundamentally unbalanced due to math. Once teams started rolling out 4 or 5 guys who could shoot at once rather than 1 or 2, and players got skilled enough to make 3s off the dribble at a high percentage, that was it
The only way to actually fix it would be to change from 2s and 3s to 3s and 4s, cause that changes the math
A lot of the complaints though are just curmudgeonly "get off my lawn" type of stuff, with guys fantasizing about their nostalgia, when you can go back and watch full games. I have, and I don't think the average defense was that great back in the day, people just remember the best teams and even then, just the big playoff matches where they were locked in.
