Traded into 6.2 million TPE created by Grant Williams trade.
Why for Atlanta:
They may lose Bey for nothing or have possibly sign him long term to a contract they don't want to keep him this offseason. With this trade they get a shooter that is not getting minutes from Boston and a 1st round pick (although currently #30) they may be able to help flip into Siakam from Tronto.
Why for Boston:
Boston should have taken Bey in the draft instead of Nesmith, but they didn't. Bey gives them a better shooter than what Svi has proven to be and are able to flip a late 1st round pick and the guaranteed salary that comes with it for Bey, who could fit into their long-term plans better. Bey would be a better backup to Tatum and Brown as a all-round scorer off the bench than anyone on the team now, including Hauser. However, a bench of Pritchard, Bey, Hauser, Brissett and Horford is as good as some starting lineups in the league. Also, we all know how much Brad hates first round picks. LOL If Boston decided that Bey's asking price is too much to resign him, then sign and trade him to recoup what you can.
They should have traded up for Haliburton, or taken Maxey.
That bench of Pritchard, Bey, Hauser, Brissett and Horford is not great defensively in the backcourt. I doubt that unit would actually play at the same time.
BUT, Bey is an upgrade over Svi, so moving a much maligned 1st (30th) and Svi could be a significant upgrade for this year when it really counts.
My understanding is that the TPE can't be combined with other players, so I don't think this works. They can trade TPE for Bey and include future picks, then Svi is unguaranteed, so Celtics can keep him or let him go. I need to be fact checked tho.
