So far the off-season, both what has happened and what they've suggested is going to happen, is so perfectly in line with what I hoped for that it's almost scary. Hoping to hear the new staff say they want Quay to rush the passer more any day now, because this is the off-season of decisions making sense and that's next on the list.

There are a lot of exotic blitz packages from the LB position in a 4-2-5 alignment. I think it'll happen naturally, so check another box off your off-season list  But they really do need to find a running mate to go with Quay. I think McDuffie played under Hafley at BC, so he'll probably get a shot to compete, but an injection of talent is needed.

I feel like the 'Will' LB spot in a 4/3 is a good fit for Walker and his skill set.

McDuffie probably gets a shot at the MLB spot but I would also look to pick one in the middle rounds.

Cedric Gray has been my pre-combine draft crush but Jeremiah Trotter Jr. would be a hell of a MLB on this team.

Exactly. I've hardly ever been surprised or caught off-guard by a Packers blitz in the last several seasons. That probably means opponents haven't been either. Looking forward to more delayed blitzes from different spots on the field and stuff like that.

What do you guys see as the front 7 in 4-3?

LVN - Clark - Wyatt - Preston w Quay - TBD - Gary as the LB?

I think LVN has the potential to be a key player in the front 7 with his ability to rush from the edge or lined up inside on a guard. I also think Karl Brook might pop as a Clark partner. I’d go LVN/Rashan - Clark - Brooks/Wyatt - Smith with Quay and McDuffie in the middle for now.

I think Gary is a DE in the 4/3. Maybe they use Preston as the Sam LB but likely more at DE.

I would guess they go get a traditional big Sam type but realistically that's the guy who won't play in the nickel so it's a part time kind of role.

It's all fluid depending on the down and distance, but I picture Gary, Smith, and LVN as the somewhat traditional DE rotation. I think Brooks and LVN can play inside or out. Clark, Wyatt, and Slaton are clearly DT's. I don't know if they need a set position for Quay per se, but I just want him going downhill more, rushing the passer, etc, rather than having to sit back and diagnose run plays or drop into coverage. I don't know which LB spot is ideal for that, and you don't want to be too predictable, but I think a prototypical ILB has better anticipation and feel than he does, and that's why I'd rather turn him loose closer to the edge. Maybe I'm just describing a weak-side LB who blitzes a lot?

Basically I think they need two "starting" LB's who are more disciplined than Quay, although there's a chance McDuffie will be one of them. They could also play 5 DB's, with one of them being sort of an old school strong safety who's almost like an extra LB.

I think you're going to see the Nickel in there the a good chunk of the time with two Linebackers. Having a guy who can play in the box and drop back in coverage will be big. Javon Bullard or Mike Sainristil would be a fun Nickel DB to add to this defense or if you wanted to go with someone a little bigger for that Safety/LB hybrid, a guy like James Williams out of Miami might be able to be your sub-package LB.

Every team in the league plays 5+ DBs over 60% of the time.

So while you technically would start 3 LBs in a 4/3, one of those guys is a very part time player.
