You are not framing this correctly.. Look at OKC, they reset hard and got Jalen Williams and Chet through draft as high end prospects.

The 2014-2019 only got that high end player Kawhi on a rental - and it was a once a decade heist. Gasol was also gettable that year because he's in the final decline years - we accumulated lots of CHEAP (valuable) assets and sold them for a single push for championship. Now we have assets who are on their 2nd or 3rd contracts (not CHEAP/as valuable), and besides Barnes no one has the high potential as Kawhi or Lowry.

This book title expresses how I view this team - it's going to be good (enough for 1st round) but has a definite ceiling - and it's being good will delude Masai to go for compete too early again and cause us to fall short of great

We need to come out of the 2025 and 2026 drafts with a quality player (basically anything but a PF) and right now we have 3 picks to do it (Pacers 2026). The question is if we try to package 2 or even all 3 of them to secure a prospect we love, or take 3 shots at it and hope we can find that Paul Pierce/Dirk/Booker/Mitchell/Haliburton/Jalen Williams late lottery talent with likely 2 cracks at it.

Seems like this draft is likely to produce only a bench guy and the 2025 draft has a lot of SG depth from pick 3-10, and we won't be bad enough to have great odds for Flagg or Bailey, so at the moment (it's a fool errand's to look this far ahead, but might as well), the odds would seem to be highest that we end up with say a center or backup PG in this draft and one of Gonzalez/Bethea/Harper/Edgecombe falls to us in 2025 and we look like this:

Poeltl/Olynyk/2024 Pacers
Barnes/?
Barrett/Dick
2025 1st/Agbaji
Quickley/?

and then a Bruce Brown trade and cap space probably fill the other 2 holes for now, and we have 2 firsts in 2026 to grab a PG and a 4, or another 5.

Barnes is the only max guy, so should be flexibility to find a trade with future picks like Cleveland and Minnesota did where you give up future flexibility to get a star to pair with Barnes and lots of solid talent around them.

If they held onto OG or Siakam, that would be a push for the play-in direction. 6 of the 9 guys they played last night are 25 or younger, they aren't built to win consistently right now.

Keeping brown and picking up KO/keeping Jak, coupled with how Masai has handled this type of situation in the past, is enough evidence I need to assume it's groundhog day.

I do think they should've moved Brown but it's hard to say without really knowing what the offers were. Hopefully they can absorb some contracts in the offseason in order to add more assets for him.

I prefer to have a competent C rotation because in the end, that just helps Scottie.

Despite the recent win streak, I'm not confident that they will racking up a lot of wins to end the season regardless of the deadline moves, but we will see.

We have a particularly weak schedule, which is telling because its based on our record as well. So I expect not a lot of wins, but enough to make the FO think that we're just a piece or two away.

Adding another IQ/RJ level player is still a good thing though, it's how we ended up making the trades for the chip. You get enough good talent level players, and you condense them into higher level talent.

Pushing for a play in spot after blowing the team up in the same year isn't exactly a recipe for success.

They just thought Agbaji had more potential than whatever is available at 28. We’ll see if that works moving forward. I never saw them using all three or four picks this year. It rarely makes sense to draft three or four rookies.

Whoever they like at 28 will probably be there at 32, or maybe they've taken him already with the pacers pick earlier. Having all those picks sort of ends up deevlauing one another in a way.

We’re absolutely gunning for the play-in tournament next year. We all know how Masai operates. I’m expecting win now moves in the off season.

If the Raps are any good next year it's because their existing young guys and their incoming rookies took a big step forward. The only real "vets" left in the rotation are the Cs. It's going to come down to how well Barnes, IQ, Barrett, Dick, Ochai, the rookies play.

Of course the irony here is that the author espouses achieving greatness through personal development and internal growth, which has been Masai's strategy all along.

You only have to worry about getting better and better at what you do. If you consistently improve, greatness will happen naturally.
