You're the Lakers GM
Congrats! You are the GM of the Lakers! Here is the situation though...
1. Ownership demands you build a contender around LeBron and AD. No rebuilding.
2. D'Angelo Russell opted out and signed with the Spurs or Magic or some other team.
3. No stars have asked out so Trae, Mitchell, etc. aren't being traded.
4. The only teams that are rebuilding (aka will trade useful vets for picks) are the Bulls, Raptors and Wizards. Otherwise you can only swap vets for better fitting vets of equal value as the other teams aren't looking to downgrade for assets.
5. You are allowed to replace Darvin Ham too.

Realistically they aren't letting Dlo walk
He is our 3rd or 4th best player and we can bring him back with bird rights
Can we trade with BKN, CHA, Hawks, and Jazz or no? They are also rebuilding or possible retooling teams

I don't see Atlanta rebuilding and the Jazz likely need an overpay for their good players. The Nets, sure, as long as it doesn't involve Bridges or interfere with 2025 free agency. Charlotte I could see actually trying to build a team around Ball.
What deal would you re-sign Russell to?

ATL would be retooling. So trading DJM for something like Vincent, JHS, Rookie, 29 1st with some protections, and a swap?
I bring up the Jazz to see if Lauri is available
Why is Bridges not available? You see how he has been playing? He isn't a #1 or a #2. He is a #3 at best and thats if you have a legit superstar and another all star or all star calibur guy and a good team.
I think Dlo is worth about 15-25m. He is a very good shooter, but not elite. He is a solid passer, but not elite.
He doesnt get easy buckets though, not a lot of layups or fts. One of the worst guards for that, just not explosive enough to get by guys with ease.
Negative defender.
Also the playoffs are an issue for him vs elite teams it seems like due to his athletic abilities.
So 15-25m for 3 years with a PO makes sense

Find someone to sign on MLE, finish up the roster , hire a new coach . Run it back .

Re: You're the Lakers GM
I replace Ham with a different coach and build to the needs of the new coach and system. The coach would be defense focused.
This group is not bad tbh:
Reaves, LeBron, Rui, Davis
Dinwiddie, Reddish, Christie, Vando
I'd want to see if I could grab a bench C and starting PG. I'd use MLE and I'd look to trade Gabe+JHS+FRP.

Funny enough running it back with a lot of the core + more isn't horrible
The new starting lineup is 10-5 and we just lost a game where AD missed 3/4 of the game
Big missing pieces are a backup pg, a backup C, and a better 2/3 or 3/4 than Prince
So if they can't get a legit star, go and try to get a few legit impact guys
Bulls: Caruso, Drummond, Lavine (would need to be compensated to take him, such as getting Caruso)
Raps: Bruce Brown
CHA: Nick Richards
BKN: Bridges, Cam Johnson
Atl: Dejounte Murray
Utah: Lauri, Dunn
Portland: Jerami Grant
Was: Delon Wright
Vets on okay to good teams: Jose Alverado, FVV, WCJ, Naz Reid
FA class seems pretty weak, but any people I am missing?

Fire Ham. Keep nodding your head and doing the opposite of what the Rambis' ask.
Sign LeBron as coach. The coaching part is for 2 years.
NOP decide to go with the 2025 1st round pick instead of the 2024.
Hire the best possible defensive assistants you can get that will hide LeBron. He IS the offense.
Trade Rui/Hood-Schifino/#14 for Dejounte Murray
Draft Daron Holmes II with #55
Sign Bronny as an undrafted FA
Sign Grayson Allen to full MLE
Sign Prince to Vet Min Deal.
Sign Poku to Vet Min
Sign Kris Dunn to Vet Min
Murray/Vincent/Dunn
Reaves/Allen/Reddish
Prince/Vando/Lewis
LeBron/Poku/Holmes
AD/Hayes/Wood
2 Way - Bronny
Would be looking to make a trade with Vincent/Vando/Picks for the best option that shakes loose before the deadline.

Re: You're the Lakers GM
So Russell left and I couldn’t even get a TPE out of it?
I think an early teens 2024 first, and two distant unprotected firsts could return a lot better player than I’m going with. Especially if you throw in Reaves, etc..
But I’m going to go smaller because I want to keep those distant firsts for when Mitchell or Trae do become available. I just don’t think any of the players realistically available would be enough to make a contender. So I’ll be patient.
Trying to turn Rui into Herro or Rozier seems smart and doable without needing to include a future first at all. Rui/Vincent/14 for Herro.. Rui/JHS/2nds for Rozier? Both ideas probably hated by both sides...
If not.. Clarkson is locked up on a nice contract while being a step down but another reunion?
For Clarkson, I’d try and get cute. 14th and Vincent for Clarkson and the worst 2027 first out of Minn/Cle/Utah/LAL? Once NOP takes the 2025 first, you’re able to trade 26/28/30/32 firsts..

Perhaps some of these feel possible but not entirely realistic?
Assuming Hayes, Wood, and Reddish all opt in and following the rules of D'lo opting out:
Hartenstein - MLE (+ starting role promise)
Dunn- Vet Min
Re-sign Christie
Rui, 2024 1st, JHS, Future Swap for Murray - or find a 3rd team to make it work.
Gabe, 29 First (w some protection), 2 2nds for Caruso
Hartenstein, Hayes
AD, Wood, Reddish
LeBron, Vando, Lewis
Caruso, Reaves, Max
Murray, Dunn

Myself, personally, I do exactly what the current GM is doing. Cash my paychecks as I continue to trade away future firsts for pretty lateral moves that give the team a new look.

I wonder how he even fits with us tbh, but I know he is a better scorer when catching or making quick moves, so it may work
Would need to then move Rui in a different move
