Poor Huskers.
Northwestern Wildcats broke their drought finally winning an NCAA tournament games (2017) now has 3 wins in the NCAA Tournament in their history since then . Last year and today as well.
Nebraska still remains the only Power 5 Conference team without an NCAA Tournament win in their history.
That's nuts.
I'm litereally amazed how that is even possible
I know! Very odd and unfortunate.
I know that Northwestern had struggled for years (especially during the '80s and '90s) and when they had good seasons, they had just missed out on bids, the bubble. Happened so often during the '90s and '00s (when they got better) . Would get snubbed for bids a few times during the '10s. Relegated to the NIT instead, they would end up there often.
But, when they finally broke through in 2017, as a bubble team. Their first ever NCAA Tournament bid (at the time the only Power 5 Conference team to never get a bid) They took advantage of that occasion/feat, made the most of it ! Beating Vandy in the 1st round in the NCAA Tournament. 2nd round, they gave Gonzaga fits, nearly upsetting the Zags. Gonzaga ended up in the NC game that season (UNC)
Then of course, last season being their 2nd ever bid, this season being the 3rd ever bid. They won the 1st round both times (vs Boise State and vs FAU). Last year nearly upsetting UCLA in the 2nd round.
So , it
s safe to say, that the Wildcats has never been blown out in these NCAA tournament games. They make the most of it.
Although, not much of a history in the NCAA Tournament. New found success for them. Been in the Big 10 forever.
Nebraska (football school back in the days, powerhouse)...... on the other hand. Has had plenty of chances so far, spread out over decades. Not a lot, but has had the opportunities. Big 8/Big 12 and now in the Big 10, Terrible some years during the '70s, but some good ones. Same during the '80s and '90s. The good years they would end up in the NIT mostly. Finally got an NCAA Tournament bid during the mid '80s. Lost to WKU (strong mid major basketball school) 1st round.
Then they ended up with 5 more bids during the '90s. Lost all of them in the 1st round (vs Xavier, UConn, New Mexico State, Penn Quakers, Arkansas). Basically losing to teams that are mostly basketball schools. lol
Then the '00s they struggle here and there. Losing seasons or some good seasons (NIT).
2010s, recent. Lose to Baylor and TAMU (today).
8 tries. 0-8 so far. Just tuff luck.
Hopefully they finally get a win in the Tournament someday soon.
