Likely but I think there is a real chance of Horford retiring if we win the title this year. In that case they would try to keep Tillman. I think going through a full offseason program with the team would help Tillman a lot
People keep bringing this up, Horford has $9.5 million guaranteed contract next year. No way he leaves that on the table.
Career earnings must be over 200 mil, if he accomplished his ultimate career goal, hits 38, and a 17-year career... retirement is totally reasonable.
9.5 million would be hard for you to walk away from, but for a guy that made so much money, that's actually much less than he makes in a "typical year." He could make less than his career average pay at 38 or just walk away and live comfortably forever on his career earnings. I don't know his thinking, but there's a real decision to be made for sure.
I would be pretty surprised if Horford retired. And am also surprised that people on here keep talking about it.
Is there any precedence (at least recently, like in the past 10 years or so) for a guy to retire when he still clearly is capable of playing at a high level? I mean, he's completely healthy, never gets hurt. Was top 25 in the entire league this season in many advanced stat categories. Was the 6th man on the best team in the league..contributed more to winning than probably any bench player in the league, started like half of his team's games. Has played well in the playoffs. A guy who is still playing this well and is completely healthy..like, when is the last time a guy like that retired? Not to mention he still has another year left on his contract for $10 mil.
And it's less about the money but IMO, it seems like Horford is a man of his word. When he signed that contract extension, he was giving his word (his commitment) to the celtics organization that he would play out that contract for the team. He does not seem like the type of guy to just be like "peace out..good luck!" when he still has time left on his contract, which would put the team in a bind.
I mean, Jeff Green is old as hell. He finally got a ring last season with the nuggets. Did he retire? Nope. And he didn't even have a contract so it would've been easy for him to retire. But he signed a FA contract with Houston. Why? Because he loves the game, he's healthy enough and good enough to keep playing..and because a team offered him some decent money.
Ish Smith is old, finally won a title last year with Denver..he didn't retire..neither did Deandre Jordan.
Year before that, Warriors won the title. Iguodala was old, won another title..did he retire? Nope, he played one more year. And probably would have kept playing but at that point he wasn't good anymore - not nearly as good as Horford still is.
Klay is washed..has won a bunch of rings but he's still playing..
LeBron is still going..PJ Tucker finally won a ring with the Bucks in 2021..he was washed this season but kept on playing..didn't retire got traded to the Clippers..
Rondo won multiple rings, including another ring in 2020. He was old and could've retired after that ring in 2020..but he kept playing another couple of years - for like 6 different teams lol.
Griffin retired but only because his body is ready to be donated to the museum of science
