Re: With the 45th pick, the Raptors select Jamal Shead
Just when I thought I couldn't like this guy any more, I just saw this:

I hope he's good enough to stay in the league, because I'm really impressed by his demeanour.

Based on what I'm reading in here, is his upside a Marcus Smart type? That would be pretty amazing at that pick

Not as big as Smart. Think an even better defensive version of Jose Alvarado with better passing and driving ability, but with less shooting.

Interested in seeing how Mitchell vs Shead goes.
Also cool that Quickley will always be tested defensively by 2 defense first PGs in practice

Shead could come here an play for toronto. Shock everyone and thrive off the bench. Proceed to go on the best 3 game shooting streak in the history of the conference finals in his third season. Then outplay one of the best point guards in this history of the league in the finals. Ultimately sealing a team chip with a 12 point 3 assist 4th quarter in game 6 of the finals.
These idiots gonna say "he's not a real point guard" and harass his wife on Instagram.
I'm not kidding when I say NO MATTER WHAT Shead does he will become a lightning rod of hate for casual basketball fans in toronto because they don't know anything.

Shead is smaller and more of a true PG in that he can run an offense and distribute the ball. I'm not saying he's Lowry, but he's closer to Lowry than Smart imo.

I keep gushing about this guy without explaining why.
I think he is worth an NBA contract and his floor is a change of pace ball hawk floor general.
At the minimum, this is the kind of third string PG you want in your org to push guys in practice, soak minutes if there are injuries or come in after a timeout to hustle and wake your team up.
We just got that way cheaper than we would in free agency.
This is a smart piece of business with upside for more value and you couldn't have picked a better human.
He will help other players get better with the intensity he will bring to practice.
He can be a big part of our development program by making guys get their shot off on someone who will stay in front of them and get up to bother their shot.

I like him, very VV-esque apparently without the ego (or the shot, unfortunately) but with much better athleticism. Could work out.

He plays defense like a cornerback. I've always thought, you put a quality corner or safety on the court, they could intimidate this lazy NBA passing you see so often these days.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

Actually think Davion is a better comp. Davion is a better shooter and Shead is a better playmaker. Otherwise very similar.

That's kind of what reminds me of Marcus Smart. Yes he is shorter but his best attribute is clearly his defense and he seems to have a strong base.

Agreed, but Alvarado really improved his shooting and came into league similar level of shooter as Shead, hitting 29 percent in year one and improving to 37 percent last year in his 3rd year. He's also impressive pressuring the rim and finishing at the rim; very athletic. We have two dudes, that if they can develop a shot, can be very good in him and Mogbo, but those are always big IF's. Shead is literally above average at everything besides size and shooting, and has all the intangibles you can ask for.

I just worry he’ll never get there. I’m not sure who the precedent is for a 4 year college player who was as bad from 3 as Shead and became an acceptable shooter. Alvarado had 2 college seasons where he shot 37 and 39% from 3 on decent volume. Shead’s best season was 31%. I wonder what the numbers say on fixing a guy like Shead’s jumper? If it can become acceptable he seems like a real player. It just seems like a pretty far bridge (which is why he went 45th).
My theory on guards like Shead who can’t shoot: why? I can understand it in the past but 3pt shooting has been in vogue for nearly a decade. If you are a 6’0 guard shouldn’t this be the number 1 skill you should be working on? Especially as a 4 year college player? I would have more confidence if he were a freshman but 4 years of terrible shooting? That has to be a bad sign. His ft shooting is solid so maybe it’s fixable. 4 years of bad shooting from a small guard doesn’t give me much hope.
