I really hope the Nets can receive McBride in the expanded deal too. But I doubt that's what ends up happening

The Knicks are going to try to recover assets if they trade McBride. I'm not willing to give back any picks. Are you?

It feels like an oh crap moment, because the Knicks' brass didn't fully understand the cap ramifications. I don't think it was part of Marks' plan, but by turning down their 5 pick offer at the deadline, he was simultaneously able to extract a more valuable pick (2031) and force the Knicks to deplete some depth.

If it only requires a second rounder or two, I'd definitely be willing to do that for McBride. But under circumstances do I want the Nets returning any of the firsts they are getting in the deal or giving up any of the other firsts the nets currently own.

firsts are off table but they can have the 2nd round pick back. or they can send him someplace else for more. marks is good at finding back of roster types like that. id probably rather bring back lonnie walker if the price isnt too big than a roster spot on mcbride.

Based on what Lonnie Walker has been posting. He’s not coming back and he isn’t happy about it.

what has he posted? not totally surprising since they probably would have tried to extend him already if they wanted him back, but he was really good for them last year when healthy. probably their most efficient and athletic scorer.

No, I want to keep that 2nd. We received our '25 2nd back. Our 2nd will be very high, and teams that are apron constrained have shown a strong desire to acquire 2nds.

with KCP to Orlando i'd be all over them trying to get one of their guards for CamJ. Anthony Black would be a real nice high upside add.

It feels so wrong, but I find myself rooting for teams like Philly, Orlando and others to improve in hope of bettering our Bucks and Knicks picks.

Bonus if teams like the Spurs can force Houston to finish with a bottom 10 record.

Honestly, Philly getting better but older is probably the best thing that can happen for the '28 pick.

Any of you guys seeing all the Lavine stuff trending on twitter? Like they can't find a trade partner, even attaching a 1st?

I mean... can we talk about what a Lavine + 2026 1st + 2031 1st for Simmons would look like?

It would stink to take on that added salary beyond 2025... buuuut adding maybe 2 picks to the cupboard in the process would be great. And then letting Lavine run the tank and then see if he can be flipped to a contender at some point in the next 2 years might not be a bad process?

IDK, I think maybe Marks is also wanting to keep that massive cap space open for 2025-26, right?

if the compensation is good enough id do it. it would sting but yes that is an underwater contract. i would think someone like GSW or LAL will take it eventually swapping whatever their worst salary is, but if chicago gets desperate enough why not add more picks. i dont think there will be any FA worth maxing next offseason, and by the following he's an expiring.

The earliest first Chicago can trade is 2029.

I think opportunity cost of cap space is worth too much to use it on LaVine, not to mention he could hamper Thomas's growth & our ability to lose 65 games.

No to Lavine. If we're going to tank let's just tank and rebuild. What would Lavine do for us? We'd become also-rans all over again, granted with more picks this time. The vibes in Chicago also don't leave a good impression, why bring that negative energy to a young team that's hopefully going to show development?

So Lakers strike out on Klay again, once again back to the trade route.

If they offered nets the murray trade proposal for camj, that seems like a pretty fair deal for both sides. maybe nets can get an extra swap out of them?

The Knicks are in no better position than they were last season after spending a boatload of picks

Sixers have arguably gone past them and they don’t have a reliable big man anymore

Knicks losing Hartenstein is really big. I guess it would have happened anyway so no real blame specific to the Bridges trade, but he was really productive for them last year. Very big loss that they just dont have the assets to backfill.

Hartenstein won the lottery with that OKC contract

Bigs are generally cheap but the league knows that the Knicks are desperate so they will probably make them pay a premium

Yeah I mean OKC overpaid, but in the context of their team it makes sense. The 3rd year isnt guaranteed so they basically did a 2 year bridge deal until they decide if they are going to max Chet and got a really nifty player.

It's a pretty big downgrade for the Knicks though.

And a nice sign that the claxton contract is already reasonable. Hartenstein only had his first year over 20mpg last season.

Definitely right place, right time for Hartenstein as he fills a position of need for OKC at a time when they have massive cap space

Most would see this contract as an anomaly and no reflection upon the value of others but this window is all over the place in any event

This makes sense to me. The more you lose the harder it is to get the pendulum swinging back the right way.
https://nypost.com/2024/07/01/sports/nets-expected-to-follow-shorter-rebuild-strategy/

But agents and league executives who’ve spoken with The Post are reading the tea leaves. And those leaves are showing more of a painful-but-short strategy than the death-by-a-thousand cuts misery the Pistons have been going through.

There are risks down each path.

Despite whatever rumors are floating about, don’t expect the Nets to move Simmons this summer for some long-term bad deal (read: Zach LaVine). And forget reports of a D’Angelo Russell reunion; it’s not likely.

It’s impossible to know for certain what free agents will be available (Jimmy Butler could opt out, Donovan Mitchell could extend, etc.). But cap space is also valuable to take players back in trades. And Brooklyn’s cache of picks are valuable to make those deals. They already have 16 first-rounders over the next seven years, and can add to that by moving Johnson or Finney-Smith.

The Nets were only convinced to trade Bridges by a confluence of events: their inability to pair him with an All-Star like Mitchell, and his own desire to leave and join the Knicks. A deep rebuild was never a preference, but a pivot.

The smart pivot would be to keep their eyes on 2025. And that’s what the league is expecting.

only big problem is that 2025 free agent class mostly stinks. but maybe you can do what houston did and pay big for a short term vet like FVV. or maybe someone like Fox or Ja shakes loose.

Return to Brooklyn Nets
