I don't even understand the point of that rule above. Who was lobbying for it?

Small market teams are afraid of big markets paying 500M a season to buy their championships.

It's completely punitive. There's not even a nexus.

Brief question: Could we potentially offer the full MLE next offseason to someone prior to extending Brunson and Randle? There may be a couple C available--Portis for example looks like someone that may opt out of his final contract year and want to sign a longterm deal at around the MLE next offseason. IMO he would be a great fit for this team---and like I posted a couple weeks back he said in an interview that the Knicks are the only former team he'd be open to going back to.....would be absolutely ideal to have another tough player, hard nosed defender, good rebounder that can legitimately shoot the 3 as well as FTs. Would balance out our FO beautifully.

Yeah, you can extend them even beyond the summer... While when they ate FA depends on the cap holds they have

NO.

If we used the full MLE, we become hard-capped at the first apron.

Jeffries is not on the team for now.

Next season you will have at least 10% raise in the salary cap... plus you can still make a move if its a few Millions of issue... Mitch is always an assett under the sleeve

Next season If we keep our 8 players under contract, give 35M to Brunson and Randle and sign more 4 vet min to complete the roster.
Locked 119M (8 players)
Brunson 35 M (team friendly deal)
Randle 35M (team friendly deal)
Sal Min Players 8M
Total: 197M
First apron (10% raise); 196M
We will be over the first apron only with the TMLe

Next season if we are keeping Precious and and getting player we got for the TMLE this season besides giving 35M to Brunson and Randle.
Locked 119M (8 players)
Brunson 35 M (team friendly deal)
Randle 35M (team friendly deal)
Precious 9M
TMLE 5M
Sal min player: 4M
Total: 207M
First apron (10% raise); 196M
Second Apron (10% raise): 208M
We will be very near the limit of the second apron and can not even the TMLE.

what is the max we can sign Precious to with the Bird rights. Just also thinking of some S&T trade options with him.

If we do not bring anyone else, around 14M. The salary just has to fit in our apron space.

But I don't know who would want to pay him this amount.

Besides, due to BYC rules, I believe, it will not make a great difference because it counts to us his old salary of 4.3M or half of the new salary.

The salary cap is maxed out at a 10% increase, so it won't be more. But with the new TV deal, we'll probably see 10% increases for at least a few to several years.

The Knicks will have some issues next off season with both Randle & Brunson having opt outs. They'll have bird rights for both, but bird rights doesn't mean they'll sign cheap though both have expressed a willingness towards team friendly deals, which is good, but next off season could be like this one - pushing up close to the apron. Sims will also be a free agent, but lets see how he plays this season first.

2026 off season they have the Mitch and Bridges free agencies to address, but cross that banana when we come to it. One year at a time.

Depending on our aproach on next season apron, we may extend Sims to turn him into a living salary filler.

I love salary fillers, they go great in salads.

Sims in a salary cap salad? Sign me up!

If a team uses the MLE they are automatically hard capped at the first apron.

The cap is expected to grow to $154.6M. That would put the first apron at $195.9M and the second apron at $207.8M (assuming the gaps are the same 127% and 134% levels we've seen each of the last two years).

The full MLE therefore would be about $14.1M. And the taxpayer would be $5.7M.
