I don’t know the Suns offseason moves well enough to know if they actually think they need him, or just wanted salary for a future trade. If they could get a team to take him into space that would create a TPE for them. Maybe toss in a second to grease the wheels. Or maybe they just want JO.

If they want to win in playoff they must be able to defend:

- Doncic/Irving
- SGA
- Murray
- Curry
- Ja
- Fox

PHO dont have rim protectors and their most successful tactic against MIN was double, triple team Edwards. Hard to do if your best PoA defender was O'Neal. O'Neal-Allen-Okogie can offer some depth.

Suns are poorly constructed, and their stars don’t complement each other. I don’t see them winning in the playoffs until they make some serious trades.

Yeah he is 8 Million in salary matching. That is how trades work in the NBA. Team A trades a salary + Asset (Draft picks) to Team B for a better player.

I think Booker and KD fit just fine together.

Do they have a 3rd star?

They have no tradable 1st round draft picks until 2032 (which they can't trade anyways).

They've also traded away all their 2nd round picks through 2030.

Literally the only draft pick they can trade is Bostons 2028 2nd rounder (protected for selections 31-45).

In theory Beal is the 3rd. Beyond him Nurk or Allen? In any case the addition of a PG move Beal to the 2, Booker to the 3, with KD at the 4, and Nurk at 5. This of course moves Allen to the bench, which will be an issue for him. You could bench Nurk, but now you’re playing super small. Add to all this a lack of depth at key positions, and you get poor construction.

Minnesota just traded a 1st for the #8 pick. I think the Suns pick has some value.

This. The pick is both too far out (can only deal picks up to 7 years,) and the second apron would preclude it anyway.

2031.

2030 is effectively a swap if you read the details of it, which I recommend doing so you are informed.

2030 first round draft pick to Washington or Memphis (least favorable of Washington, Memphis and Phoenix incoming, effectively a swap)
Washington has the right to swap its 2030 1st round pick for Phoenix's 2030 1st round pick; Memphis then has the right to swap its 2030 1st round pick for the less favorable of the Phoenix pick and the Washington pick [Indiana-Phoenix-Washington, 6/23/2023; Memphis-Phoenix, 7/11/2023]

Washington gets the better of Washington/Phoenix
Memphis gets the better of its own and less favorable of Washington/Phoenix.
Phoenix get's what is left, which means they will have a 2030 pick, which means they can trade their 2031 pick.

2031 is tradeable.

Not for a second apron team who was in the second apron last year (the Suns were.)

Time starts now. So the 2031 Pick freezes AFTER this season. Phoenix can still trade it before the trade deadline.

My understanding (thanks in part to someone on here I believe is Shrink,) is that the clock starts at the beginning of the season based on the prior season. The Suns ended in the second apron for calendar year 2024, (based on season 23-24,) so pick 2031 (seven years out from 2024,) is frozen as a penalty. The pick for 2032 will be frozen if they end in the 2nd apron in 2025. As for trading 2032 without the freeze, you are only allowed to move picks within seven years. So neither 2031 or 2032 are available to trade for the Suns.

As Rorschach said:

None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with *ME*!

This is how MIN should play against other teams in Western conference.

My understanding is the 2031 Picks don't freeze until ended 2 seasons above the 2nd apron, with 2023-2024 as Year 1. Here ya go, Full CBA, nothing about 2031 mentioned.

Draft Pick Penalty.
(1) As used in this Agreement, the following terms shall have the
following meanings:

(i) “Second Apron Team” means, for a Salary Cap Year, a Team
that, as of the start of the Team’s last Regular Season game
occurring within such Salary Cap Year, has an Apron Team
Salary for such Salary Cap Year that exceeds the Second
Apron Level for such Salary Cap Year.
196 Article VII

(ii) “Draft Pick Penalty” means, for a Team’s first round draft
pick, that such draft pick shall be the final draft pick in the
first round of the applicable NBA Draft (regardless of the
position in the first round of the Draft at which the Team
otherwise would have selected pursuant to NBA rules
governing the order of selection by Teams in the Draft);
provided, however, that, if multiple Teams’ first round draft
picks are each subject to a Draft Pick Penalty in respect of
the same NBA Draft, then the Teams with such first round
draft picks shall select in the inverse order of their winning
percentage for the Regular Season immediately preceding
such NBA Draft (with priority in selection among any such
Teams tied on a winning percentage basis established
pursuant to NBA rules governing the order of selection by
Teams in the Draft). For example, if Team A’s and Team
B’s first round draft picks in the 2032 NBA Draft are each
subject to a Draft Pick Penalty, and Team A finished with a
better winning percentage than Team B for the 2031-32
Regular Season, then Team A would make the final selection
in the first round of the 2032 NBA Draft and Team B would
make the immediately preceding selection.

(2) Beginning with the 2024-25 Salary Cap Year, if a Team is a
Second Apron Team for a Salary Cap Year, then:
(i) the Team shall be prohibited from trading (either
conditionally or unconditionally) its first round draft pick in
the first NBA Draft that occurs following the seventh
Season that follows the Season occurring within such Salary
Cap Year; and
(ii) with respect to the four (4) Salary Cap Years immediately
following such Salary Cap Year:
(A) If the Team is a Second Apron Team for two (2) or
more of such four (4) Salary Cap Years, then such
first round draft pick shall be subject to a Draft Pick
Penalty; and

(B) If the Team is a Second Apron Team for fewer than
two (2) of such four (4) Salary Cap Years, then, as of
the day following the last day of the Regular Season
encompassed by the third of such four (4) Salary Cap
Years in which the Team is not a Second Apron
Team, such Team shall be permitted to trade
(conditionally or unconditionally) such first round
draft pick. For clarity, such first round draft pick
shall not be subject to a Draft Pick Penalty.

Example: If Team A is a Second Apron Team for the 2024-25 Salary Cap
Year, then it would be prohibited from trading its 2032 first round draft pick
(i.e., its first round draft pick in the first NBA Draft that occurs following the
seventh Season that follows the Season occurring within such Salary Cap Year).
If Team A is also a Second Apron Team for the 2025-26 and 2028-29 Salary
Cap Years, then Team A’s 2032 first round draft pick would be subject to a
Draft Pick Penalty.

Example: If Team B is a Second Apron Team for the 2024-25 Salary Cap
Year, then it would be prohibited from trading its 2032 first round draft pick.
If Team B is not a Second Apron Team in the 2025-26, 2026-27, and
2027-28 Salary Cap Years, then Team B would be permitted to trade its 2032
first round draft pick as of the day following the last day of the 2027-28 Regular
Season (and such first round draft pick would not be subject to a Draft Pick
Penalty).

So assuming the pick is tradable. They probably should've taken a swing similar to what we did and gambled on the upside of a lottery pick.

Because I don't see many (any?) players making 8M or less that would move the needle for them. And at the expense of the closest thing they have to a trade chip.

At least with the picks we traded, if we bottom out, both of our picks can/will convey. Phoenix is trading away the worst of 3 picks seven years in the future.

I think that's when they start moving to the back of the first round. The freezing has begun.
