The tranquility of the soul rests in one's reconciliation with the realities of life. -BS Murthy

My mental health will not allow me to entertain the thought of filling the enormous void in my spirit with The Seattle Supersonics just yet.

I look forward to the day I will post here again, but until that day, know all of you whose spirit keeps this place alive are in my heart.

The BOG meeting is supposed to be in July, after the NBA Finals.
That'w where they'll sign off on the tv deal.

After that it's off to the next topic and that, according to everything you can read, will be expansion.

The ownership group of the Kraken will also make some changes and create a structure(don't know the wording anymore) that will "allow for new opportunities" this summer.

My guess is yes, they'll announce something given that expansion is next on the list and Seattle + Vegas seem to be the foregone conclusion.

Just some info.

Chris Daniels has started a weekly show called "Inside the Arena" at Komo News.
They also report on the return of the Sonics in every show.

Just a little nugget on the Sonics.

If you listen to the show of Chris Daniels it points that this summer will be "very hot" when it comes to the Sonics.
He's also said in past shows that we should expect basically clearity on expansion within the next six months.

Not quite yet, Warner Brothers Discovery can still match.

I hope they get to it after this media rights deal is done.

What's the point in delaying the expansion decision?

1) I don't think that Warner(TNT) will still match those rights given how long it's been known that they had to do so and they still haven't done it.

2) No matter if they match or not, it doesn't change anything for the league. They still get the same amount of money and it's already agreed upon/signed.

3) Everyone's talking about this summer when it comes to Sonics and expansion.

I guess I might be wrong on Warner Brothers potentially matching.

Sources. WBD could try to match Amazon's $1.8 B media rights bid

Once the BOG approves the deal, the league is expected to formally deliver the official packages to incumbent partner WBD on Wednesday, who will then have five days to match or try to match, a scenario the network’s most popular studio analyst, Charles Barkley, hopes can play out.

Well, WBD could try and match but would have only five days which could start next Wednesday.

Also, according to the article, Silver seems to expect taht there might be a lawsuit.

2026-27? So two years from now?
Read on Twitter

The whole interview with Chris Daniels.
https://www.iheart.com/content/2024-07-11-59-softy-dick-interviews-chris-daniels-on-new-nba-media-deal-and-expansion-/

Just a bit of a summary of what Daniels said.
- he expects the nba to form an expansion committee between August - October this year
- he expects a quick decision(like they did with Charlotte 20 years ago) and think it will be announced around December
- he says the team will be named the Supersonics and get all their records etc. back but will have to make a deal with Bennett for that
- he expects the team to start playing during the 2026-27 season

Let's hope he's right and we have some exiting times ahead after 16 years of this crap....

Thanks for the summary

I understand they won't want to rush things but 2025-2026 should be on the table.

Why not?

Because that would be way too close time wise.
The earliest you can expect a decision will be the end of the year and there's no way they welcome teams in six months after that giving the other 30 teams next to no chance to prepare(roster wise etc.) for an expansion draft.

BTW: Silver held a press conference yesterday and talked about holding talks exploring expansion this fall.
This would fall into the time table Daniels gave when he said they'll form a committee between August - October.

"We're not quite done with our media deals yet, but once we are we will turn to consideration around expansion," said Silver. "I will say it is a bit more complicated than it is suggested sometime. Because, just think of the new media deals, for example, once they're completed when you bring in new partners, you're diluting those payments of course to teams. Sometimes it seems as if we're printing money when we expand, but actually it is no different than selling equity in any business. I think there needs to be a fair amount of modeling with the league office working with existing owners and really thinking through the long-term prospects. Again, not just economically but also potential for dilution of talent.
"Having said that, I think we will engage this fall in earnest in the process of making those determinations. Should we expand? And if we were to expand, how many teams should we expand? And what markets should we be looking at?"

Oh joy, Silver mentioning dilution of payments and talent...
