Love when a boring weeks turns into a fun one with a handful of big upsets.

Did Iama forget that these football games have time limits and he can't just keep playing until he scores a TD?

Re: College Football Discussion - Week 5
Private equity ruins literally everything it touches, and yet I don't hate some of the core concepts in play here, namely eliminating virtually all non-power conference games.
That said, this **** sucks:
According to the proposal, school-by-school distributions would skyrocket, cash that presumably would be used to help sustain Olympic sports — something that administrators contend is threatened by the advent of revenue sharing. However, the revenues will be allotted unequally. Project Rudy separates the 70 programs into three tiers.
- Tier 1: the top 16 schools earn per-school revenue projections from $130 million in Year 4, escalating to $250 million in Year 12 (double the SEC and Big Ten’s current distribution rate).
- Tier 2: the next 22 schools earn revenue of $60-$110 million (similar to the SEC and Big Ten current rates).
- Tier 3: the last 32 schools earn projections of $30-$60 million (similar to the Big 12 and ACC rates).
The model offers a variety of ways to determine how to tier schools: the previous season’s results, perhaps, or an aggregate of results over a stretch of seasons. The model also features a relegation and promotion system to pave a way for schools to move up and down the tiers. However, one proposed model suggests having eight “permanent” members of Tier 1, a move presumably to placate the biggest brands in the sport.

It’s the only way they’d get the titans of the sport to agree to this.
Otherwise they’ll just stick with the current unequal format that suits them better.

I'm personally on the fence about this.
I get it, because while I always feel "the spirit of the sport" is the fun upsets, an Alabama vs. Toledo game is going to be trash 10 minutes into the game 90+% of the time.
That said, any "super league" sort of thing is going to turn Ole Miss into the caliber of a bottom-tier major conference team most years, it's going to turn Wisconsin into Toledo, and it's going to turn Vandy/Northwestern into UMass.
There might be some fun parity in the middle, but it's going to blow for 60 of the 70 fanbases for the majority of seasons and you'll start to just see people pissed off that they have to watch Georgia vs. Wisconsin with a 30 point spread.
It's actually fine to pad some wins and feel good as a middling team.

Wisconsin, a program in the top 20 for the last 25 years, will absolutely not turn into Toledo.

Somebody has to lose these games. We've already talked about how pessimistic I am in this current era - now you make it even more about money and throw the geography factor in there, OK, maybe a MAC level team is a bit extreme, but being maybe the 40th out of 70 teams is not going to be fun, I will tell you that.
There are going to be years for some relatively consistent teams of the past where they win 2 games and people will stop giving a **** pretty quickly.

Re: College Football Discussion - Week 6
Last week was a terrible week on paper and it ended up having several great games. This week looks much better and hopefully at least some of the marquee matchups hold up.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

100%.
After two decades of consistently good to great football teams, it’s taken 4 years of Wisco being a 7-6 type team with visible and obvious head winds against return to contention for me and all my rabid fan friends (all with disposable income to donate, btw) to lose 75% of our interest in the program. Can’t imagine how quick it’d be gone if we were a perennial 3-5 win team in a made for TV/cash grab super conference that the same 10 teams compete for every year while everyone else just gets their heads pounded.
Will kill off what’s left of the sport.
Please reconsider your animal consumption.

Re: College Football Discussion - Week 6
I wonder with the promotion/relegation idea there would be some sort of 2nd tier championship? Tetting promoted would kind of stand in for that, get the school more revenue, and allow them to get the **** kicked out of them for a few years again before getting relegated.
I guess it would probably not interest the wider crowd, but that may be fun. Play a bunch of teams in Tier 2/Tier 3 and get to play for something...kind of like the old Big Ten West.
If we're going to be mixed in with the mega powers, we're going to be mediocre and get the **** kicked out of us regularly and it'll be hard to keep fan interest.

And yet ratings have never been better with more and more teams are "in it". College Football is only behind the NFL now in terms of popularity. The sport has never been better.

It woke up a few sleeping giants as you said and there are 10-15 teams that will dominate every year and yeah, there will be more parity in that group. There will be a rotating group of 20 teams that will accidentally make the playoffs once every 5-10 years but will also have 4-5 bad/mediocre years in there, which probably includes the Badgers (I hope).
At large, people will love the big matchups and middling fanbases may come alive for 2 year periods when they luck into a run and then lose by 30 in the playoffs to a superpower. It will probably do well, but as a fan of one of those middling teams, I'm not as excited. Granted, we basically never had a shot anyways in the old days, but the Big Ten West was a fun "2nd tier league" where we got to win and pretend there was a chance.

Dude, just stop watching the Badgers and Brewers. It sounds absolutely miserable.
