It seemed like a death group before the season started but it seems pretty weak now with all the injuries

Nuggets/Grizzlies and Pelicans/Mavs have West Group C tourney games today.

I think we will see 3 teams at 1-1, one at 0-2, and of course GSW at 2-0.

I just don’t want the Warriors playing the championship cup game. Some player is gonna be the first one to get injured in what is ultimately a meaningless game.

Could be nice to be the first team to win both the cup and the chip. But other than that, yea it's pretty meaningless.

It is a running total of the point differential for all the cup games that team played. So the Warriors won their 2 games by a combined 8 points.

Someone on a GB thread pointed out that overtime games are being treated as 0 point differential (ie, the overtime margin doesnt count). It seems most people think this is strange, but I like it.

Scoring differential is used as one of the tiebreakers. And with only 4 games for each team in group play, the tiebreakers will end up being used in some groups, and for the wild card.

So GS has motivation to RUTS the Pells G-league team tomorrow. At that point they'd probably only need to stay close to Denver in the last game to advance.

I'm guessing the only reason they even ran this back is because they probably signed a 5 year deal with Emirates to sponsor it and now they're stuck seeing it out.

It's probably because I'm a huge soccer fan and am used to that format but I really like the cup. It gives another snapshot of the season and a team's success. I don't think last year is super indicative but, even then, the laker and pacers were two of the hotter teams early in the season and they met in the finals. A team that wins the double, as it's called in european soccer, would have a claim to differentiate them from another team that just won the title but didn't win the cup.

For teams like Indy that have never held the trophy, the cup may be a nice consolation prize. Certainly not in the first few years but once we get a team that wins the double, the cup will gain importance.

I think the problem is it seems kind of random. it's blended into the overall season in a weird way and doesn't seem like much fanfare.

what might be more fun is like an early playoff preview. take the teams that are actually winning early on and simulate a march madness style 1 and done playoff. dubs, thunder, c's, cavs, etc. in a single week long bracket to see how everyone shakes out

They probably have a way to exit the deal. Obviously it will involve them not getting some portion of the money. But usually deals like this are not made in a way that the partners are stuck with each for 5 years no matter what.

Agree completely. The nba f'ed up by trying to mimic the champions league format (or world cup) where you start in groups and progress to single elimination. I think the march madness style bracket would have been a great idea and maybe once they get to 32 teams, they'll get there.

Or national interest in the NBA during Nov/Dec NFL season is always low. So even if core fans are annoyed if it's drawing any extra interest it's seen as worth it.

Not sure why they didn't make the groups the divisions. seems like a no-brainer on that one, too.

The hard thing about a single elimination bracket is figuring out the rest of the schedule. I believe now they only need to make up a couple of games in the back end if you don't make the tournament.

vvoland wrote:Not sure why they didn't make the groups the divisions. seems like a no-brainer on that one, too.

I also don't think they did divisions because those should be easier games to promote already
