Just a quick counter to the “when you’re that close, go for it” logic. First of all, it was arguable the team wasn’t even that close. None of those Finals runs were predicted after all. So mortgaging your future on a team that isn’t even a true contender is a big ask.

Second, sometimes you get EXACTLY what you’re asking for…and it’s a Terry Rozier, or a Ricky Davis (older Heat fans remember that one). So be careful what you wish for.

Pat Riley successfully got out of max extending a player that doesn’t have much left, without making the organization look like the bad guy. He now has us set up for a chance at a super team in 2026 in terms of where our cap is at.

He is not washed

Jimmy Butler in my opinion really screwed this whole thing up for himself. Jimmy was a fringe all star before coming to Miami. The Heat helped make him very loveable even marketable.

Now he doesn’t have much left in the tank, and if he opts in next year he will have a hard time getting the Heat to trade him because they are not going to take back that salary on anything longer than an expiring and will just hold onto him unless or until they can get an asset back. If he opts out no contending team will have the flexibility to sign him, and he might not even touch 50 mil the rest of his career in total.

The reality is Jimmy doesn’t have any leverage. Tt really doesn’t hurt or change anything if they just keep suspending him if he doesn’t want to play indefinitely. Pat Riley might have turned the tide on the player empowerment movement. Because Miami won’t care, other players won’t care and the rest of the NBA will see it happen.

Also, no credit is given to finding players that fit into the cap (ie undrafted) that bolstered those teams, only bitching about not trading for disgruntled stars even when there are times the league literally steps in to prevent it from happening (Dame).

Actually let me take that back, its not really this board, most of the bitching comes from player first fans with zero loyalty to any team who view everything as transactional. Whores will be whores.

I don't think that anyone is unhappy that the Heat overachieve, I think they are unhappy that the Heat have to overachieve year after year.

That's just it, though - we don't have to overachieve. You better be glad we do, because when it's over... It's over...

We’ve had it good making ECF’s & 2 Finals during Jimmy’ stretch & had some bad luck on the way w/ injuries to main players. Doing this w/ the roster we’ve had. Better than 90% of the league, who, if had the same roster wld fail miserably. Yet you all complain & whine rather than feel blessed to have experienced what most teams wld love to sniff even a little bit of. Go follow other organisations & be miserable like their fans & let us keep operating for our nxt Championship run. Seriously F off already & let professionals make the decisions that you all wld f*ck up everyday. When we go on out nxt PO run, & it will be sooner than majority of teams, i don’t wanna see ya’ll same cats cheering & enjoying the fruits of the process it took to experience success, again.
If u don't want 2b here, the way things work, u don't like it, then don't b here. U have 2 stand on something. If Miami ain't standing on something, they become alot of these organizations trying 2 find their identity. This is the culture, bro -Wade

I am in agreement on Zion. Been saying he needed Riley/Spo/UD to keep his fat ass in check since his rookie year. Heat Zion would be a BEAST.

With IG issues, Pornstar issues.. Miami will eat Zion alive :o

Zion ain’t like that. He wld break here.

Right, we have higher impact guys in Bam and Jimmy when it matters most and an elite coach. How many times did we need to see them be 1-2 pieces away before we actually decided to get them?

Multiple things can be true at once

1. It is true that Riley and the FO never fully invested in getting Jimmy help all these years. That includes Bam who has never been a true second option caliber player for a championship team, and Tyler who was too young and inconsistent and not ready to be in any type of “big 3” conversation on a championship team. The teams we have had that have been good have been very much “by committee” teams. Basically Jimmy and the others. And even those have failed at roster construction, with a lack of a true big to give us some actual size and true offense in the front court. So Riley and the FO have to own that.

2. It is also true that Riley handled this poorly by bringing it to the media with the criticism of Jimmy in the first place. It’s one thing to do that to Tyler hero, trying to inspire a young hungry guy who was in trade rumors every other minute. It’s another thing entirely to do that to your All-Star who everyone can see has not had an adequate roster around him despite the success he and the coach have brought the franchise

3. But at the end of the day, what’s REALLY true and really driving the tension is not the roster construction. It’s not even about the way that Jimmy feels about being publicly called out. Jimmy would not give a damn if he was getting paid. This is about money. He didn’t get his extension and now it’s an issue. He’s looking for his last payday, that’s it and that’s all.

Constructing a roster has got to be easier than what Spo is asked to do most years. If the job was easy it wouldn't pay as well as it does. If it was easy the job wouldn't have come with a minority stake in the franchise.

I have no idea why everyone is accountable in this organization except the guy in charge.

I think it’s the criticism of Spo that annoys me the most on this board. The Riley criticism is often valid and it’s actually been valid since the way Riley handled Wade. But the Spo scapegoating is ridiculous. These are not rosters where you have a ton of room for error as a coach. And yet he’s been in contention every single year.

People really don’t understand how awful we would look with almost any other coach in the league.

Spo definitely deserves the criticism sometimes for sure. But a lot of times it reaches the point of absurdity. That’s where I’m like ppl need to be reminded how lucky we are to have him. He’s a top 3 coach, period.
