Assigned Teams Non Draft - Discussion

Post#1 » by durantbird » Fri Jan 10, 2025 5:54 pm

Draft Rules:

1. All NBA/ABA seasons from 1959-60 to 2023-24 are eligible, subject to the restrictions outlined below.

2. You will be required to pick a total of 8 players. Each of your players must play a minimum of 8 minutes in your rotations. Any player chosen in a season that is pre-merger will have a multiplier of 0.85 applied against their actual fga, rounded to closest 0.1.

3. Your team will be allowed a combined total of 88.0 FGA with a minimum of 3.0 FGA per player corresponding with the specific seasons indicated for each player. NOTE: You may pick a player whose actual FGA number was lower than 3.0, but you still be charged 3.0 for that player.

4. Each player you select must have played at least 50% of regular season games in the season selected. He needs to play at least 50% of his games for an eligible franchise.

5. The game isn't a draft, meaning you will be creating your team offline, and several teams can use the same players.

Each drafter will be randomly assigned one team from the East and one team from the West based on the following tiering system:
- Tier 2 teams will be paired with Tier 2 teams.
- Tier 1 teams will be paired with Tiers 3 teams.
- Tiers are defined for each conference separately.

Your team will need to be composed of 4 players from each of your assigned teams.

Team Tiers
West Teams
- Tier 1: San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns
- Tier 2: Dallas Mavericks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets
- Tier 3: Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings

East Teams
- Tier 1: Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls
- Tier 2: Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic
- Tier 3: Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks

Your 8 players should follow the following limitations:
- Category 1: One player who ever won regular season NBA MVP or a Finals MVP
- Category 2: One player who ever won an All-NBA First accolade (All ABA First guys like Artis Gilmore aren't included here)
- Category 3: Two players who have ever been selected to an All-Star game or to an All-NBA team
- Category 4: Four other players who don't qualify for the above categories

You can "downgrade" a category so you don't need to use all your spots. For example, you can pick a non All-Star/All-NBA player for any category spot, or you can pick a guy like Klay Thompson who was never All-NBA First for your Category 2 spot. You obviously cannot upgrade a lower category to a higher one.

Note: All teams will be assigned only once, ensuring diversity.

6. You will post your team on the roster page by the draft deadline.

7. The winner of the draft will be determined by ranking. You must submit your ranking in time in order to be included in the final rankings.

Team Roster Page Rules:

You will be responsible for creating a roster page for your fantasy team. Here are the things that you will be required to include on your roster page:

. Players
. Rotations
. Draft selections
. The most important of all, you must show the total FGA per player on your roster AND a total sum of each players FGA to display that it is under the required 88.0 FGA

-All of the above must be completed before rankings

I'll do it. I'm not sure if I understand the how the teams get assigned - even after reading through several times. But I'm down to just go with the flow.

In, though I'm not crazy about going back to 1960.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Confused by the list of signups. It includes people who haven’t signed up and excludes some that have.

Proposal for a minor adjustment:

How about allowing ''one regular season MVP or Finals MVP'' in category 1? Pairing Timmy with Kawhi may be OP (plus Manu, Wemby, etc). Selecting both Pierce and Ray in category 3 for Boston seems like OP as well.

Unclear on category three. Is it basically saying you can select anyone so long as they never achieved first team all-NBA or MVP? For example, these players could have made multiple all-NBA teams so long as no first team and no MVP?

I think it matters less here as you cannot stack up MVPs anyway

You can select any All Star or All NBA guy in category 3 as long as they haven't won an All NBA First. Like Ray Allen or Klay Thompson.

Similarly it's not explicit but in category 2 you can select anyone who won All NBA First but not an MVP. Each time you go on a lower category, your guy can't qualify for the higher categories.

Kawhi is certainly a great category 2 guy, question is is he much better than guys like Chris Paul, Anthony Davis, Luka Doncic etc. But maybe the fact that you're basically guaranteed an elite category 1 and category 2 guys with the same franchise might be problematic in itself.

Not only is he better than all of those, but he's easier to fit on a random team and is linked to an already loaded franchise. (I'm assuming each franchise can only be assigned to one manager?)

The signup list is still missing several people.

Same team can be assigned to several people. Basically we have no limits on how many participants can participate.

If we want to add Finals MVPs to Category 1, I guess we can do that. I get why we want to exclude Kawhi but I'm not sure about Pierce. But guys like Wade or Jerry West are also better off Category 1 I guess. There will still be many guys that fit into category 2 that are elite but maybe with flaco's suggestion, things will be just a little bit more balanced.

Am I still missing someone on the sign ups list?
