1. LeBron James- best player in the regular season and playoffs. Arguably his peak season as he added a post game and 3 point shot and was better off ball.He was mostly unguardable now as this was the beginning of LeBrons dominance in the Eastern Conference

2. Kevin Durant- Probably 3rd best in the regular season but outperformed Paul in the playoffs. Led team to the NBA finals

3. Chris Paul- second best in the regular season but falter ed in the playoffs

4. Dwayne Wade- Underrated season from him but slow down Abit in the playoffs because injury. He was still however a still very good second option

5. James Harden- I remembered a James Harden was a superstar thread on realgm pc board back in 2012 which was controversial at the time because there was some debate on whether Harden deserved a max contract or not and he came off the bench. He was probably a superstar even this year as he was probably the second best player on the Thunder.

1. LeBron James

Difficult to make a case for anyone else. I almost put Garnett above, as he posted higher RAPMs in both RS and PO(substantially so in the PO, 7.16 vs 5.70) and a monstrous +35.6 PO on/off, while getting one game away from knocking the Heat off and making the Finals. But I couldn't get there.

2. Kevin Garnett

I initially had KD at #2 like many of you, but KG's impact metrics blow KD's out of the water, while KD's own teammates Westbrook and Harden had higher on/off in the playoffs. It's an underappreciated season for KG. After the 2011 playoff loss, I'm not sure anyone thought the Celtics would be back in the ECF in 2012 and giving the Heat a run for their money, but they were and they did(and I distinctly remember the consensus feeling at the time being one of surprise at what the Celtics did in those playoffs), and Garnett was, going by on/off and RAPM, by far their most impactful player.

3. Kevin Durant

Led the league in scoring on +8.3 rTS, and then led his team to the Finals while scoring on even higher efficiency(+10.5 rTS). The impact metrics, particularly in the playoffs, give pause, but this is one of those times where the combination of box numbers and team performance outweigh the impact metrics for me.

4. Dwight Howard

Seems like I'm alone on this, but I think Dwight still has an argument for being more impactful than Kobe or Duncan in this regular season. Higher on/off than either of them at +8.8, as well as higher RAPM for the RS.

In the 54 games Dwight played, the Magic were 33-21, which is a 50 win pace in an 82 game season. In the 12 games he missed, they were 4-8, which is a 27 win pace in an 82 game season. And those 12 games weren't an especially difficult stretch, with some of those losses coming against a 20 win Wizards team, a 38 win post-Melo Nuggets team(twice), a 36 win Jazz team, and a 25 win Pistons team(though they blew that same team out less than a week later).

I feel like there's an argument he provided more lift before his season ended than CP3 did for the Clippers.

5. Chris Paul

His impact metrics sparkle in the RS, but despite substantial SRS and Net Rtg improvement, the team only wins 8 games more than they did in the previous season. He scored efficiently on decent volume and had a phenomenal assist:turnover ratio in the RS, but in the PO his scoring efficiency dropped by nearly six percentage points to below league average while his phenomenal 4:1+ a:t ratio dropped to a merely good 2:1.

HMs:

6. Dwyane Wade

Great numbers, but I just don't feel comfortable putting him in the Top 5 when he was LeBron's #2. It also doesn't help that, via pbpstats, the Heat's Net Rtg was +4.29 with LeBron on and Wade off, and -7.08 with Wade on and LeBron off.

7. Dirk Nowitzki

Great regular season, short playoffs.

8. Tim Duncan

He played great in the playoffs and went to the WCF, but the impact metrics in the RS don't make you sit up and take notice like KG's do.

9/10. Marc Gasol/Mike Conley

Both had pretty strong impact numbers for the Grizzlies in the RS - +10.9 on/off and 2.83 RAPM for Conley, +11.6 on/off and 3.24 RAPM for Gasol - and pretty decent in the PO too.

11. Kobe Bryant

Just not that impressed with him this season. Scoring efficiency is below league average in both RS and PO, impact metrics are underwhelming, and they lost in the playoffs in a bad way.

Best player ever has to be 1 lol. I know KD has all these things he doesn't do but he still scored a bunch with super high ts and made the final after finishing 2nd in MVP.

Duncan is the best player on a great team and it kind of seems like he straight up outplays CP3. 21/9/3 on 61% TS? Feel like it's hard to put someone who is at like 40% ts and scores 9 less points and defends alot worse.

Chris Paul was still pretty great before though.

I know and Boston made Miami play 7 but it kind of feels like he's just getting rewarded for playing them when they were injured. If bosh played all the games I think they'd just lose in 4 or 5 and no one would really care.

CP3 was the 2nd best player but once again played injured against the Spurs and sucked.

But impact-wise he was better than Durant.

These early Clippers years don't get talked about but they're him near his best. His defensive ability alone was one of the est in the league. Definitely better than 2015 era.

Here is my reasoning why I think 2012 lebron is better than 2000 Shaq

Lebron better than Shaq in their best Traits ( Scoring )
Bron RS 27.1 ( +7.8 rts )
Shaq RS 29.7 ( +5.5 rts )
They almost have the same volume when Bron need to share the ball with another ball dominant player

Lebron is a better Resilience player in the PS
Lebron average 30.3PPG on ( +6.9 rts adj. ) opponent Defense ( -3.22 Drtg )
Shaq average 30.7PPG on ( +4.7 rts adj. ) opponent Defense ( -2.72 Drtg )

Lebron is a more versatile Scorer and he's on the same tier as Shaq in Shaq most dominant area of scoring

- Lebron Paint 45% vs Shaq paint 46.7
- Lebron Midrange 36% vs Shaq 35.6%
And Bron wipes on 3pt

And Shaq getting Foul is still generating point but Bron also generate more points in FT on better efficiency so he harder to scheme against

Playmaking their second best traits
Lebron is a better Passer Faciliter and Ball initiator also a better decisions maker as he better read for his teammates ( he can create both at the rim and the Prerimeter )
Lebron still has Goat tier Rim Pressure + Goat tier on ball with his drive. He can bring attention even on the Prerimeter and the elbow because they fear him using bully ball on catch drive to the basket

Shaq sure bring more attention at the rim with his goat post + paint pressure and his Goat tier gravity there both on ball and Off-ball but his creation come from kick to Prerimeter which lebron is Also elite at but his presence in the paint make his teammates unable to drive or harder to finish at the rim.

Lebron is a more portable player cause of his more diverse playmaking Skills and creation. Scoring also can be more suitable for more offensive scheme or pattern

Lastly Defense - Lebron defense is more valuable cause he can be the primary anchor with his switchability on interior/Prerimeter. He a better man to man defender and a better offball navigator.
He still can be use as roamer and Cleaner for the Miami heat. He one of the most important piece to the small ball transition offense of the Miami heat.
His defense is much more valuable and can be use in more coverage than Shaq interior + cleaner.Even if Shaq is better as Interior. Lebron is still great at that whole still providing elite defense ability all around. Lebron is a smarter defense per say because he can make elite play while not fouling as much as Shaq making his defense less prone foul out. Even then high fouls number make the opposite team attack you more and make you more passive as a defender.

Shaq sure is a better screener cause of his size and how the Lakers offense were played but Lebron PNR as on/Off-ball still have high value to his playmaking. He can be both the ball handler or the roller and he can collapse the defense as both roll just like shaq.

Shaq Second option as Kobe is much more suitable to his play still cause off ball scoring and midrange maker ( Kobe 43.2% Midrange )

Dwade as a high usage ball handler with not much spacing is not really a big help for Bron game even if he's a cutter ( Dwade 30.7% midrange )

( Not saying Kobe is better than wade that year but Kobe is more valuable for Shaq play style

Also last thing not to forget Lebron is better than Shaq at everything on the transition game. Lebron is a better transition scorer with his speed + physicality. He's a better Playmaker on transition with better dribble and passing ( read the defense )to create advantage for his teammates. And he's a better transition defense cause of how fast he can recovery
