Yes and No. I believe we could sign him, but only be waiving someone else (15 spots,) and we badly need spot 15 to go to a C. Which means we must decide between paying even more dead cap and dumping someone who we probably could have traded for something, or running without DS.

So we can't release Minott to free up another spot or that spot is extremely expensive? To get both Theis and Schroder

There is no possible way for us to sign Schroder.

You are correct, my bad. I thought he made less than he does.

So true. We were $16 mil over the 2nd apron, so a deal acquiring Durant $51 mil deal would mean we’d need to send out over $67 mil. We won’t trade Ant, Gobert can’t be traded after his extension, so it’s nearly impossible for us.

Oh BTW, PHX is under 2nd apron restrictions, and we’d need to find a third team that can absorb lots of salary. And neither MIN nor PHX has the many assets to grease a deal, so … “Riiiiight”

Hmm .. I wonder if Ant asked Connelly to make an offer to his idol, not realizing it’s virtually impossible. One cool thing though was seeing Durant turn down mighty franchises like the Warriors, and thinking he might like a trade to MIN. We have a new image.

Such a move smells of a team knowing it isn't doing anything but wants to tell its fans, "We tried."

Great point. Most fans aren’t going to realize the CBA makes it impossible.

They’ll just see “Kevin Durant!” and think, “I like that guy! Good job!”

More like 2-3 weeks, and one of those weeks is also referred to as the all-star break.

I hope you are right. The sooner we get healthy the better both for the team and my sanity 8-)

I think the interest was genuine and I think it was meant to send a message to KD:"we want you and if we can't get you now we will be back this summer". All of these recruitment pitches start early, months of courting in advance. Will probably see Ant in a tight hug with KD at the end of game next time we play them whispering in his ear.

If Randle opts in then he, Mike and Rob get you there financially.
If Randle opts out you can probably get him to do a S&T. Question is can you keep Jaden. Can you get KD to demand a trade and put MIN on his "list" and force PHX to accept a lesser package.

I believe that the interest was real, but it was very much a “This is what we can offer, but appreciate that it probably isn’t enough to make it happen.” It would have taken an extraordinary amount of moving parts.

It would depend on Kevin Durant wanting to leave Phoenix (lose in the Play-In?), but there’s a way to do it with Minnesota staying capped under the Second Apron. However, it would probably cost Jaden McDaniels to make it happen (I don’t think that Phoenix is giving Minnesota Kevin Durant for Julius Randle and a sack of potatoes).

Regardless, the team needs a better C than Garza

Absolutely unlikely, pie in the school scenario; is Dallas an option for Gobert? Specifically in return for Lively (and others of course)?

If they want defence enough to ship Luka for AD, maybe they want to add to it with them 4 time DPOY?

If the Wolves had not traded Towns, would dealing him for Durant been easier to complete? We know with the current set up, Connelly would have had to move many parts in order to make that happen.

EDIT: I will add Phoenix may have been more willing to move Durant for someone like Towns, especially with the Suns trading away Nurkic.

We would have still likely needed to get below the second apron, I'm sure.

No. KD makes 2M more than KAT. And with both teams being over the 2nd apron, it would've been very difficult.

Interesting tidbit for a Durant trade this off-season.

Durants salary - 54.7m
Randle(30.9) + Jaden(24.8) = 55.7

We could just get a 3rd team involved that takes on a small contract from Phoenix. This is assuming we won't be a 2nd apron team this summer.

People in the fan base are afraid of pissing of Ant by trading Jaden, but I think he'd be fine with it if it brought in KD

I'd hate losing Jaden but having KD would make our offense so much better. Absolutely need to try and get another big man in this case, either draft(hopefully have a mid 1st to go with a high 2nd) , trade, or able to use our MLE, or sign and trade Naw?

If Ant wants to KD to Minnesota we know what he will tell KD “Bring your *ss.”
