NBA Identity Changers (with Mike Shearer)
In this episode of RealGM Radio, host Wes Goldberg is joined by Mike Shearer, author of Basketball Poetry on Substack, to discuss the NBA’s most impactful offseason additions and how they’ll reshape team identities across the league. This year's regular crew on that team, like Omoruyi, Rhoden and Lawson, are playing within the system. Then having multiple NBA guys in and out of the lineup also helps maintain the system play. It's a virtuous circle that is helping everyone develop.

I heard them say this year they are running the same system that Darko is so guys will have an easier transition into the NBA. Plug n play. Mentioned it would help guys like Mogbo and Chomche in the future.

Ir really feels like they are back to using the gleague as a pipeline for future Raps. I assume our Portland pick will spend most of the year down there next year. Mogbo might too split time...keep working on the 3. No need to try and rush guys now that we finally have better depth.

Make sense, last year 905 head coach was an analytics guy with no playing experience

Darko is a good developmental coach, but I have my doubts if make it to playoffs for crucial in game decisions

As the team gets better the coach implicitly will look better too.

Example: Philly team, Nurse looks like a horrible coach. He was great on our championship though. See?

We will only find out if Darko is good if we put him in that situation.

Is there any reason to watch this game for an hour?

Any of our rookies/draft picks playing right now?

Chomche looks great and far ahead of the curve.

He knows where to be on offense and defense, and he makes the right read and pass more often than not.

Chomche should have more pick and rolls using him as a offensive option. The foot work needs to be developed further. The guard heavy play is a little annoying.

6/8/1 and 2 blocks at half time. I don't get how we're playing Robinson instead of Chomche especially with the development focus we have.

Because for some reason you think being in the NBA is better for his development than the 905.

He will likely be there most of next year too. He needs to keep working on his offense and being down there is better for that than up here

Gradey dick should be in the gleague then too.

Same with Walter ans Mogbo. They all could use more minutes and reps for sure.

But with 3 guys hurt and trading KO and Brown, someone has to play. No issue with Chomche coming up to play....but not full time. He is still learning how to play bball.

Chomche is the youngest player in the league remember

Ulrich had a bad collision with one of his own players falling into knee and hyperextending it. This does not look good.

I hope this doesn't screw up his development. The injury looked bad hopefully he didn't tear anything. He was going to get a lot of minutes towards the end of the year with the big club. This sucks pretty hard.

Walter should be down there and same goes for Battle. They are taking a back seat to Gradey's tank commanding.

Walter has a lot of creation potential and he's had good game down there. I want to see him having great games and dominate the ball like he did at Baylor.

Next season I hope we draft some projects. VJ, Maluach, Johnson, Fears, and the second rounder Ivisic, Byrd, etc would be good pieces to add to the GLeague team.

In the next 3 seasons we should see them give the bench a big push. We need the best bench in the league through these picks so our starters are rested. After 4 years Ingram, IQ, and Barrett could be gone. We will need the next generation to take over.

This FO has to get their picks back on track. We passed on a lot of guys who are killing it lately and some on playoff teams.

Terrence Shannon Jr. is getting run with the Wolves and just dropped 24 against the Lakers and practically carried their team after Edwards went out. Jaylen Clark has also been playing for them and he was a high level defender in college.

Quentin Post just had 18 for the Warriors and has been shooting it at 40% from three.

Yves Missi just had a double double and has shown high level defense when healthy. That was just the last draft.

Our best pick up has been Battle who they don't play now. The key is finding guys who have developed in college and are ready or just guys who have one-two NBA level skills showing early on.

We need to stop rolling the dice on skinny developmental projects and get high floor guys this next draft.

Masai got 4 rotation quality players in an exceptionally weak draft.

I think it's debatable that the players we have drafted are quality rotation players. Shead averages 6 points and 34% from three. Ajay Mitchell on a playoff team averaged 51/43/85. Isaiah Collier turned his season around led the NBA in assists in February. Both are bigger and younger than Shead.

Walter 7.5 points and 30% from three while Jaylen Wells starts on a contending team and shoots 38% from three and defends star players.

Our guys have moments but look flawed. Shead turns the ball over a lot and is a small guard, and Walter can't finish well at the rim and can't pass or shoot it well. He has many games where he is invisible.

Mogbo belongs in the G League. He is so bad that they have to play a wing sized player as a C. Filipowski is now at 51/38/60 and is seven feet. Quinten Post is even better for GSW and really helping them in the playoff hunt.

Not saying our guys won't pan out in a few years. But I think my point is we now have accelerated our timeline with Ingram and going forward we have to get guys who can really contribute to winning each time they get on court. Battle has been great but the other guys are theoretical rotation guys. Next year we need better shooters and defenders and not players who are years away.
