But dang, they just work so well together. I don't think I'd say either of them have the innate talent of DeMar and LaVine ... but they fit together in all the ways those two didn't.
Coby DOES NOT need to bring the ball, or start the offense. He's totally happy running on the fast break, or getting the ball in the flow off offense and finding his that way. Meanwhile, he looks happy to cede the real Point Guard to Giddey; and let Giddey slow it down when it needs to be. Giddey has blown me away with his ability to lead Billy's offense in the half-court.
And they are 22 and 25 years old. If you're going to invest money long term, you might as well give them the money whilst they are not yet even in their prime. I'm totally on board with continuing with those two as our backcourt of the future as our foundational players.
However, that still doesn't help the Bulls with the hole of a legitimate star player to truly be the backbone of this franchise. Can it be Matas? Or will we need some lottery luck? We're going to need a more athletic, defensive big man, and retain some scrappy guards coming off the bench when Coby and Giddey can't cope with the smaller backcourts.
For fans that are draft obsessed, this probably isn't the most appealing part to rebuild your team, but considering how the majority of our best players being 25 years or younger, we've somehow manage to find ourselves in a decent position to rebuild on the fly. It's just a matter of whether the front office goes all in on someone like Zion or LeMelo and disrupts the identity that we look to be building. Playing fast, playing hard, and playing together - these are the types of players that the front office should have always surrounded Billy around.
Why so serious?

Re: Bulls @ Nuggets 8pm CT Mar. 24 2025
I'm conflicted, on one hand I want the Bulls to get a good pick this year (but definitely next).
On the other hand, this Bulls team is young and running, Majin Buzelis is getting minutes and contributing, Coby has taken on the scorers role (he was never a PG), and Giddey has emerged as a big piece since the deadline.
I hope they're able to hit on their FRP this year, wherever they may draft.

We can’t pay Coby this offseason. We have to wait until Summer 2026. I read the max we can extend him for now is $18 million per. Obviously he won’t accept that.
Yeah, I know. I meant in the long run. Some hyperbole. Ask me about that notion three months ago I would have said hell naw.
I really was skeptical of Giddey. But he is just killing it. I think honestly though, Giddey is playing his best because he is in such simpatico with Coby as his backcourt partner. They've got a ying/yang balance to what they bring and cover on offense.
So I know we have to make a decision on Giddey this summer, and I'm willing to pay 30 mil for him. And that will give us another full year with Coby ... and I'm honestly more comfortable keeping Coby that year (and paying him after) than automatically thinking about trading him. (Obviously, that year of Coby still needs to evaluate his consistency).
I just think they are so impressive together. And yeah, they aren't great defenders (but I notice their improvement) ... but this team is committed to some stronger defensive wing pieces (Matas/Pat/Ball/even Dalen making most of his minute ... maybe Ayo)

Just how Jimmy took that leap and keep going, same thing I see with Coby. He’s elevated and it’s an absolute show.

I was about to say I'd agree, except the risk of losing one of our FRP to the Spurs :-/.
Then I remembered we got the protections kicked in the LaVine trade!!! I remember it was a sad excuse of a FO to have to recoup our own pick in LaVine trade ... but honestly right now I'm pretty happy with that move! We got all our picks, and still that (probably worthless) Port pick.

In a miracle lotto this year ... I'd really like Ace Bailey. He has superstar potential. All the skill already there, but like Matas needs to build his NBA body. I think having a PG like Giddey would let him get to his potential much quicker too.
I do think it's unlikely that we find the needed star in the draft. And I really don't want to see them go for the expensive price (like Zion or LeMelo) and as you say disrupt what's building amongst these guys. One thing I am interested to see, is how Miami shakes out (like if they end up in a rebuild) ... and maybe snatching Bam without giving up a core piece. He's 27 now, really fits the type of athletic, rim running, strong defensive presence that a young Bulls could use. Concern would be if he becomes available too late, and it's a little too much like Ben Wallace addition. Scratch that ... his 60 mil player option is cray

I'd love some lotto luck to get Ace Bailey also, with Giddey getting him shots he'll be good out of the gate IMO. But what do I know, I talk nonsensical stuff.
Miami can't take next year, they own and unprotected FRP to OKC (as it is protected 1-14 this year) so I can see them trying to make winning moves, at least enough to get them around .500 ball.
I hope I didn't suck all of your joy out.

The Dalen Terry game.
What a wild season with the most “I never saw that coming” moments of my Bulls fandom.

At work, was following the box score. Cannot wait to get home and watch the extended highlights. I’ve kept all my bulls real GM receipts on never giving up on Coby and how I have believed he was always going to be a really good player.
It’s fun to see the whole board get on board. We finally get to see the Bulls with Lavine in the rear view…and it’s looks even better than a lot of us thought it would.
Giddey and Coby…I’m just all in. Do whatever it takes to build with Coby, Josh, and Matas. We will watch where this all goes but im hyped as a starved Chicago guy in Miami with nothing to look forward to in the sports world.
