Pujols and Cabrera were at least all-time greats. If the rumours are true, he's gonna be under contract with this team making 30+ million in 2039. The guy can't even stay in shape or elevate the ball consistently at the plate in his early 20s.

On the plus side, Rogers is spending money. In MLB that’s a must.

After striking out so often in free agency it was becoming harder to believe if what we read we offered to other stars was even real or if it was just smoke to make it seem like the team wanted to be competitive. Signing him for his career at least shows willingness to spend.

Vladdy also is fairly respected among other MLbers so maybe lining him up for his career makes other people consider Toronto more viable in the future?

I’m trying to find some positives. At least it’s not a cap league, right?

I feel like our front office and the weird vibe they have with the manager and the players is the reason why the Jays have been striking out on all the good free agents rather than our rep as a city. We had no problems signing pretty big names in the Ricciardi or AA era.

14/500, it is confirmed. Almost certainly will end up being the worst signing in Toronto sports history and baseball history.

This FO was already a complete failure and out of desperation they’ve now they’ve set this franchise back for a decade more. We are doomed.

No deferrals? This is probably the 2nd best contract in baseball history after Sotos lmfaooooo for a offense only first baseman whos offense isn't even consistent.

No deferrals. Vlad already dropped 85M in a month from his 14/585 demand, no clue why we didn't just wait him out even further. He was going to only get more desperate as time went on and there's not a chance anybody was going to offer him 14/500 in FA.

It's true, he's not even offense-only at times. Take his 2023 season for example where he was nothing-only.

I never thought it would be the Blue Jays handing out the worst contract in the history of Pro Sports, and not just baseball. A potential franchise crippling contract for 14 years if Vlad cannot duplicate the year he had last year in baseball seasons ahead (including this 2025 season). The rational move was to trade this guy coming off the season he did, for a boatload of elite prospects and MLB ready talent (cheap and controllable also), to shore up the depth of this organization with its bottom tier farm system. A final parting gift from these clowns Atkins/Shapiro after both of them are hopefully fired after this year.

Dumb and Dumber Shapiro/Atkins panicked and were so desperate for good press, that they bowed down to Vlad and his agent. Just a mindboggling contract for a First Baseman, coming off only one very good year while being a disappointment for two years prior to that. A larger contract for Vlad, compared to what Judge got (9 years and 360 million) is laughable. Shapiro and Atkins would have gotten my respect if they just stuck to their original generous offer of 340 million over 10 years (which was also an overpay for Vlad). I would have gone even lower than 340 million. If Vlad reverts to 2023 Vlad, no team would have offered him much more than that in free agency for a First Baseman. Congrats to Vlad and his agent for letting this play out the way they did, and making Shapiro/Atkins look like the fools they are.

If you're letting your FO do this kind of move, I'd be pretty worried that Ed isn't getting rid of these guys at all. This is a strong indication he'll extend them too.

Doomed.

It's true. -1.6 dwar in 2022 and -1.0 dwar in 2023. He's had a negative defensive impact his entire career basically. Even with the eye test, you can see that his range isn't great at first base, and playing there also makes his great arm a non-factor. Adding to that, his baserunning also ranks bottom tier. Offence is the only thing carrying Vlad.

A call of this magnitude most certainly did not just come up from Shapiro/Atkins. Ed Rogers was definitely involved. He's been spending money aggressively and was part of the Soto and Ohtani chases as well. No doubt they figure that they can recoup a lot of the money through merchandise sales and using Vlad as a draw to keep the casual fans coming to the ballpark even if the team sucks.

Keep in mind that they've just spent a lot of money renovating the Rogers Center and added a bunch of executive suites, social places and other revenue generating "experiences". This investment won't bear fruit if no one comes to the park. So signing Vlad and basically presenting him as the franchise star to the fans is really important to maintain fan engagement.
