Should Jokic leave the Nuggets in the 2027 offseason?

Post#1 » by zimpy27 » Mon Apr 7, 2025 4:12 am

Jokic is locked in for 25-26 and 26-27 season.

Nuggets wouldn't trade him but should Jokic leave in the 2027 offseason?

Where should he go?

If he wants to win more titles, then he should leave.

What would his options even be at that point?

Stay with the team and don't win anymore rings. This way the fans that cry about "loyalty" and "stacking the he deck" will be happy, all while participating in GOAT discussions and ranking him lower than other players due to his ring count.

If Jokic wants to leave I think the Nuggets would trade him pre free agency, no? That seems the way it tends to go, and they'd get a huge haul of picks for him.

Yeah he will obviously lose those fans who aren't fans of players moving teams for a better chance to contend.

But I doubt Jokic cares about those fans

Nah unlikely, they would want him for that 2027 chip run even if he doesn't stay.

Nuggets still have Murray, MPJ, Gordon and youth to build around and the freed up money of Jokic salary. They'd be a play-in team

Jokic comes from a small city in Serbia, and his NBA role model was Tim Duncan, so unlike many others, he doesn't care about "big market"/"big city" factor, and has literally zero ego (which actually can be a problem for sports superstars). We're talking about a guy who back in time didn't even complain because his scandalous 6th player status when coming once as an NBA big star to play for the Serbian national team (World Cup) or when control freak Mike Malone eliminated one by one his best friends in Denver which all played for almost minimal wage (Mike Miller, Jameer Nelson, Juancho Hernangomez). Also, note that Jokic's off-court commercial deals are far worse compared to other sports megastars, so particularly in his unique case, there is a very big difference between max and supermax deals.

All that said, I see only a small window for Jokic and the Lakers, because that franchise is famous for making impossible deals possible + even Jokic after coming in Hollywood will became marketable enough to compensate supermax/max gap + Luka Doncic is his new best friend (or co-best with Gordon), and of course, LeBron's future and health in 2027 as 43+ old will be under question, so I guess they already monitoring who would be future perfect pair with Luka.

I bet he'd just retire from the NBA and go back to playing in Serbia before he ultimately hangs it up and lands some sort of advisor role in Serbia. Then retires quietly to never be seen or heard from again.

Lakers are definitely targeting him in 2027.
Reaves-Doncic-Jokic would be a ridiculous trio.

I don't see any scenario where Jokic uproots his entire life in Denver to chase rings on another team. He has a player option for 2027 which will be his 32yo season. Given that he's already checked off every major accolade, I think there is no possible way he turns down a potential 400m+ final contract from Denver to finish his career there. The grass isn't always greener and his co-stars in Jamal, MPJ, Gordon and Braun all still have some level of untapped potential to keep them in the race.

Yeah I'd be surprised. Jokic seems to have a healthy separation between work and personal life. Relocating for greener pastures would be huge for a person like him. Probably forgets his problems when he thinks about his next horse race. Didn't even want to go to his own championship parade.

I hope he signs for the Celtics. Tatum, Brown, Jokik, Durant would be a hell of a big 4

Wow, I'm in the overwhelming minority. If I were Jokic, I'd stay in Denver, one team, whole career unless something crazy happens and you have a complete management/ownership turnover.

He gets the same 35% max whether he stays in Denver or another team. He will just not get the 5th year or 8% rises with a different team.
Though on a bigger market team he'd make a ton more on marketing. LeBron makes more from endorsements than salary for example.
