Seriously, though, and I think many of us have said this in many different ways, is there any ethical standard in sports journalism that would prevent Shams or someone similar from using a blind quote from an executive in a competing franchise in a story -- or, in this case, *as the story* -- about a player who tilts the entire league toward him?

Also, does Shams still get paid by FanDuel? Not saying he's profiting off this kind of reporting but just the fact that he could should be alarming.

Its like superstars are becoming a rare breed now a days. How many are still in the playoffs?? Things have changed. I am fine with trading him as long as its really good.

It's been done by ESPN for yrs involving Giannis. My question would be is there a legal standard, since they're hurting the Bucks' re-sale value. Costing 10's to hundreds of millions. It's a matter of if they crossed any lines by totally fabricating a story as opposed to just producing deceptive ones.

How do you know that Giannis' camp didn't put out the story and let Shams blast it out, to see the reactions?

No, I just avoid making statements about it at all. I'm comfortable in "who knows?" territory.

Does it do something for you to dismiss this info as absolutely nothing?

I file **** into the irrelevant category on a daily basis, so no, not really. And I don't consider unsourced "league sources" as "info".

Fair and you're free to do that. The reality is leaks like this are rarely, if ever sourced.

File it as irrelevant. I'm sticking with "who knows?"

The Shams tweet said Giannis is "open minded" about it, now the ESPN article headline is "Giannis Antetokounmpo to explore best fits outside of Milwaukee" I hate everything about ESPN. I know they aren't the only one's who do this but other than watching games themselves there is never ever a reason to have ESPN on. And I don't.

Because that wouldn't have been a "league source".

I'm inclined to believe that his agents put it out. Just as a soft feeler. To let teams know he's gettable.

I don't know why people are bagging Shams for this. Every person here had to know that it was inevitable that Giannis was going to start looking elsewhere in light of Dame's injury and virtually zero chance of competing for a title during the last two years of his contract.

If it was Gianni's agent, then it'd be framed as a source close to Giannis. League source is a rival exec who'd covet Giannis. It's almost always reported as a "league source", or something to that effect, when it's a report about Giannis.

Why would we bag on Shams/ESPN? He/they have deceived the public for 6 yrs, thru 2 extensions, & Giannis going on his brother's podcast to say he's sticking up for the city & team against the b.s. reporting.

I'm not sure how anybody can watch these playoffs and get the sense that anything is out of reach.

I think Shams is a leech, a profiteer who provides no actual value, like Woj before him but hastier and with worse quality control. I'm talking about him now because it's salient to this board, not because my opinion has changed due to this report.

ESPN: "Hey Shams, we need something to juice up the lottery tonight".

Shams: "I'm on it".

Often the most obvious explanation is the correct explanation.

Nothing is out of reach if you have a great coach and smart front office and lots of quality talent. We don't have any of those things right now, in my view. With Dame injured, we're stuck with Giannis and a bunch of question marks. Perhaps they can get something by dangling 31 and 32, but a difference maker? I'm not so sure.

Anyway, I'm not inclined to argue about Shams. I'm not a fan of his and his style of simply being a mouthpiece for his sources without any additional vetting. I don't consider it quality journalism to say the least, but I don't think it's of zero value. At the very least, it's information about what his sources are thinking, and I believe his sources here are tied directly to Giannis.

Nah, even if it was Giannis's sources, they could ask Shams to simply report it as "league sources" to give Giannis's camp plausible deniability. The information contained therein, though, suggests that it's coming from Giannis's camp.

Ummmmmmm............I'm pretty sure getting the best player in the world in his prime will also get them a pass for a couple years.

Nah, because they could just say sources close to Giannis, & that's vague enough to not give away who it's coming from. But if it's from Brooklyn's GM, they couldn't present them as close to Giannis. Open-minded is also vague for them to have plausible deniability on a materially false rumor.

But just like Kareem when the window closes (and it has), you have to trade them for the best package you can and turn the page. It's the best move for the franchise and the best for the player. Giannis could legit win a couple more championships elsewhere and that isn't going to happen in Milwaukee. I know the Bucks didn't win another championship after they traded Kareem but they had some very good teams, the Bucks if they get the Giannis trade right could rebuild and be competitive again in a few years.

It hurts, but management really needs to think longterm here. If they don't and Giannis signs elsewhere in 2 years (or demands a trade his final year) the return will be crap and with no picks it'll be a long dark road back. The kind of road some franchises don't survive.

Kareem demanded a trade. They never would've traded him otherwise.

Gonna be really funny when Charlotte or Utah wins the Flagg sweepstakes tonight and all this talk goes nowhere for the next 1-2 months.

The league really wants to push the narrative of Giannis in a bigger market. regardless is we flame in out rd1, rd2 anything short of winning a chip they were going to run with this narrative all off season. its disgusting and makes me not want to watch their rigged league
