If we stay at 7 or fall a few spots, we need to trade down. Brooklyn has a few picks, so does ATL and OKC.
Last thing we need to do here is to swing for the fences and run the risk of coming up empty handed. I'd rather take two or three shots and come up with 1-3 quality rotation guys than gamble on Maluach and have nothing to show for it if he doesn't work out. It's not like he's looking like a healthy Oden, Gobert, Bynum or any of those guys. We should still be able to find a very serviceable C later in the draft like Condon.
That’s exactly the wrong strategy. The current team has a ton of depth and lacks high end talent. You want to endure an entire year of tanking for the #15 and #22 picks who will end up as 3rd stringers stuck behind Walter, Dick, Shead and Ochai?
This team desperately needs to swing for the fences and go for the highest possible upside to lift them out of the treadmill tier.
Couldn't disagree more.
The path to acquiring another star for Toronto has always been turning our quarters into a dollar. We did it with Ibaka, Gasol and to a lesser extent - Kawhi and Green.
Right now we have a bunch of pieces that we aren't quite sure of their fit together. Financially, there's a very real possibility we'll need to move one of Barrett or Quickley and whatever we can throw together to get a star and ideally we'd want to be able to do that without impacting our core too much. In order to pull that off, you need depth. So with #9, that's what the focus should be.
If there was someone around there that I thought was a star OR there was an opportunity to move up and acquire an Edgecombe or Harper, that's a different story. But that's unlikely to be the case and I'm fairly certain once the dust settles, we can get most of what Maluach would be doing in a guy like Condon.
Unless of course there is some serious superstar potential in Maluach that I've failed to see up until this point and perhaps there's another team that would trade serious value for him then fine but I wouldn't be taking him for keeps.
I'd prefer Queen a little more to be honest but even with him, I'm not sold that he's got superstar upside.
