Question about 2nd apron trade restrictions

Post#1 » by CP3nthusiast » Wed Jun 4, 2025 5:55 pm

Can teams over the 2nd apron trade one player for multiple players from the same team if the incoming salaries combined are equal to or less than the outgoing salary? I know they can't trade away multiple players in a single trade but it's not clear from the CBA summary if they can or cannot trade one player for 2 or 3.

I ask because the Suns are a 2nd apron team, even with declining Micic's team option, and yet I see many trade ideas that have them aggregating multiple incoming salaries for KD.

Yes, they can, but Suns can drop below 2nd Apron this year, and they should TBH...

2nd apron teams can receive as many players as they want as long as they adhere to all the other rules set forth.

Yes. They can trade KD for multiple players as long as the total of all of those players' salaries is less than KD's salary.

Yeah, a 2nd apron team can trade a player making $50M for two guys making $30M and $19M apiece because the total of $49M is less than the $50M player outgoing. But they couldn't trade a player making $50M and a player making $5M for 2 guys making $26M each. Even though the total incoming of $52M would be less than $55M outgoing, their $50M player only covers one of the incoming $26M players. In order to match the 2nd, they have to aggregate with their outgoing $5M player which is not allowed.

A little help if you guys know the answer on this question

'Teams above 1st apron - can't acquire a player via Sign-and-Trade'

Does this mean they can't sign-and-trade their own free agent for another player, or it means they can't trade a player on their payroll for player another team signs and trades to them?

They can't receive newly signed players in S&T, they can sign their FAs (for example last year Sixers S&T Hield to GSW, and Wolves S&T SloMo, both were above the 1st Apron).

If you trade a player under contract for a S&T’d player, you’re hard capped at the first apron

If you S&T your own FA to another team for a player under contract, you’re hard capped at the second apron

Succinctly correct. The best kind of correct.
