Knicks To Interview Micah Nori For Head Coach Role

The New York Knicks are interviewing Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Micah Nori for their head coach opening. Nori is the third candidate known to have an interview with New York, joining former head coaches Mike Brown and Taylor Jenkins.

Nori has been with the Wolves since 2021. He joined the staff under Chris Finch in Finch's first full season as the head coach. Nori was Minnesota's sideline coach during the 2023 playoffs, after Finch tore ligaments in his knee.

In addition to the Timberwolves, Nori has also coached with the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons. He's been on the short list of candidates for several head coach jobs in the past.

Right, because conducting interviews while Thibs is still part of the team would be so much better.

Sometimes you have to rip the band aid off and then figure things out. Thibs was fine, but his substitution patterns and heavy minutes for his strters raised questions.

So because the Warriors hired Steve Kerr in short order after letting Mark Jackson go, people think this is how normal NBA coaching searches go. It's not. If you determine your current coach isn't cutting it, you remove him and then conduct a search, which is what the Knicks are doing. The way to find out who is replacing him is to conduct a search, which is obviously more problematic if you haven't removed your current coach. The media narrative of "they should have had the guy in place" or "this is rudderless" doesn't make any sense if you think a little.

If you fire the coach that made the ECF for you someone expects that at least you have a good Idea of whom you envision as a guy to help you in the next step. At this point, 15 days from the day they fired Thibs it is clear that they don't have that name. At least they don't have a name that isn't already a Head Coach in another team.
This process of interviewing is ok when you're changing direction, not when you need adjustments. Today they can start interviewing everybody in the market, the chances of finding someone who is certainly a better coach than Thibs or certainly could improve his work is zero. It will be a gamble.
