Hugo was MVP of not 1 but 2 European tournaments last year, playing for Real Madrid's U18 team:

Others playing in the ANGT: Nolan Traore (19th pick), Noa Essengue (12th pick), Egor Demin (8th pick), Kapsaras Jakucionis (20th pick) and Joan Beringer (17th pick)..yet Gonzalez won MVP over all of them.

Then last summer in FIBA U18, he had 32 pts vs Israel (led by 26th pick Ben Saraf), 30 pts vs Finland and 26 vs Lithuania (who had Jakucionis).

Didn't play a lot this season but he was on a Real Madrid team loaded with former NBA players, playing in the ACB league and EuroLeague.

Hugo reminds me of Wally Szczrbiak in the sense that college aged, female Celtics fans are gonna be like "he's really hot."

(this is not the type of sentence I was hoping or expecting to be typing when the draft started.)

There were other players I liked more. But Brad just hasn't really swung on a player in the draft. We're at such a moment of inflection that if this is the guy he thinks can give the most value over the next few years, and if he thinks his coach is going to give Hugo development minutes, then sure, I can get behind the pick.

I liked that Brad did something unexpected.

but when you look at this kids production at Real, Hugo didn't really do much, doesn't really shoot it... But if Brad believes in him and believes coach will play him... okay, why not. I just was not expecting this pick and I havent been surprised by a Celtics draft in a while, thats all

Per Brads interview they're not sure if he'll play in summer league or not yet just based on the Madrid season ending late.

Brad's biggest pluses for Hugo was initially just "cutting" and left it at that for a moment. Then elaborated and essentially boiled down to high IQ and willingness to do the dirty work. They believe in developing him as a shooter.

The list of guys who were in a major media outlet preseason top-5 mock and then, come draft night, went this late is not an inspirational list.
Usually it means a guy got over hyped as a highschool aged prospect, teams put tons of resources into scouting him and the player was then exposed or really disappointed in his draft year. Again, a huge fall from projected top 5 to barely 1st round is not usually a positive indicator.

It's the Skal Labissiere indicator. Sometimes called the Felipe Lopez indicator. And infrequently referred to as the Lenny Cooke indicator

I've just watched a few highlights. The kid seems to loooove attacking the hoop. Putbacks galore too. Passing looked good. Anticipation on defense stood out, with lots of steals and blocks. Like someone mentioned in the other thread, he looks like a dog. Great energy.

If playa-hater hadn't mentioned his 27% from three, then I would've said that this kid gives some Scheierman vibes.

He'll be fun to watch.

OK I am obviously not sold on this pick. And I have my concerns, but I. Also always say in Brad I trust. So until proven, otherwise I'm giving Brad. The respect that he pulled out a good one.

There’s also other players who were projected high, dropped over the course of the year and turned out to be good.

I think it’s a bigger red flag at a collegiate level where teams are incentivised to play highly ranked recruits because they’ve put all their eggs into that basket.

Real Madrid is a pro team with talented and experienced pro basketball players and are more than capable of winning games without relying on a raw kid.

Reminds me of Avdija as a prospect. Questionable shot, point forward type who’s young and playing for a EL team. I actually like the pick and the upside play here especially since we can still grab a good player like Raynaud or Fleming tomorrow

Called this months ago if he was still on the board at #28. Brad has a type when it comes to draft picks. But can't complain when he gets a prospect this good this late. Still I have questions. Like how did Gonzalez actually slide to #28 ? How are NBA GMs this bad at their job ?
