That's a good contract for Turner. The dead cap money they added just to sign him is not so bueno. Short term it's fantastic for them. They are just kicking the can down the road until Giannis asks out. I can't even say I blame them, it's the dark side of doing everything possible to keep your generational player.

Stuff like this is what the Nuggs should've been doing the last couple of years. If you're going to keep that generational talent, do whatever you can to put pieces around him. Being cheap now does nothing, fans will excuse you burning out for a few years if you keep taking runs at a trophy, especially when your star is beloved by the fanbase.

Even though it hurts them long-term, I would have done the same thing. You're screwed anyway if/when Giannis asks out (and likely out of a job), so may as well grasp at straws here.

Another team talking about they'll go into tax to keep their core, who went to finals, but just lip service. If anything we should try to go after Pacers gm or president, as they'll be use to cheap owners like Rogers, who wants cost cutting.

Who is the next casualty of the Pacers cheapness? Mathurin?

The Pacers could've just dumped a contract. Hate blowing up their core and great fit of Siakam and Turner.

Exactly, your two options are trade them and go into an absolute full rebuild, which neither team can since they have none of their picks, and MIL had that Lillard contract weighing them down by the throat, or lean into it and mortgage that future even more for a shot now.

The latter is what we did, you know, minus having a player or a team worth doing it for.

Yes. This is exactly why there was a post on X last week saying teams are monitoring his situation as the next guy to move. They won't pay him.

Yeah this is going to be peak hilarity. I wonder how that BI trade is going to be perceived if/when he plays like 50-60 games, and that FRP is potentially a lotto pick.

Pacers won’t fall that bad. They are still in the East, and they are a team that has never pursued a tanking strategy. This is just the owner being cheap, and Hali’s injury gave him an excuse to be cheap here.

They still probably make the playoffs.

Just imagine if there was a team that was canadian and didn't have 40mil tied up in a guy who if he played 60 games would be considered a success. Who needs flexibility amirite?

They didn't know they were going to give up the 7th pick in the draft for Jak either, but when you give up valuable low lottery protection picks up, that's what you're risking.

That's what retooling over rebuilding looks like. When you lack patience, you give up the potential higher rewards that come with it.

Yup. They also would have re-signed him if they didn't have their pick.

All of that is not is a given is it?. Everyone around here was saying how cheap the ownership is.
Couldn't they use other avenues to duck the tax after, like trading Toppin or ben mat

They had a path to do it. Also, plugged in reporters (Lowe, Bontemps) had said that ownership had greenlighted the tax for a year or two for a contender. That's why they traded their pick this year, because they didn't want additional salary and bring guys back.

Yes, the owner is cheap and that was partly our upside. But based on how far they went in the playoffs, the green light was given to go into the tax this year, until Hali was injured.

Giannis has definitely entered into his LeGM arc of his career.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

They just lost their starting center who stretches the floor, which is INCREDIBLY important for a Siakam led team, and their superstar starting PG who you know, also stretches the floor.

By no means am I saying it's some guarantee they miss the playoffs, but it's far from an unlikely possibility anymore.

They put a Top 6 protection on it, so they had some idea it was a possibility I'm sure

There goes the Pacers run at the championship. They’re gonna get destroyed on rebounds and interior game.

Even though it hurts them long-term, I would have done the same thing. You're screwed anyway if/when Giannis asks out (and likely out of a job), so may as well grasp at straws here.

Exactly, your two options are trade them and go into an absolute full rebuild, which neither team can since they have none of their picks, and MIL had that Lillard contract weighing them down by the throat, or lean into it and mortgage that future even more for a shot now.

When have we ever mortgaged out future? Over the last decade, we've never traded a pick beyond the current year and outside Poeltl, we've never traded a prospect. Our future has never been mortgaged.

If you think about it, we've been a very responsible team in that sense. We contended for half a decade, won a championship, pushed for playoffs for a few years and through it all, we never sacrificed our future. Very rarely done in this league.

People consider the FRP for Jak an All-In move here because they love their draft picks, that is until they actually become players.

They got their pick back because of that downside risk, not because they are going to tank now.

That’s why I said they probably still make the playoffs.

If Pascal gets hurt, that is where they start to run into the risk of not making the playoffs.

Just a perfect storm of events. They traded the pick to save some salary and bring Turner back but now having that pick is what convinced them to reset for this year after the Haliburton injury.
