In the modern era for sure. Pre-90s there were a lot of transactions to keep teams from going bankrupt, etc. that look HORRIBLE.

The Jazz 'traded' the pick that became Magic Johnson for the right to sign Gail Goodrich in free agency :-/

They also lost the rights to Moses Malone from the dispersal draft that year. But free agency worked differently, the league forced them to trade all of those pick, they did not choose to - https://saltcityhoops.com/bold-jazz-takes-explored-part-i-big-what-ifs-alternate-reality-titles/

Ok let me acknowledge that the queen trade has the potential to be really bad, but alot of this is really a huge over exaggeration. Focused specifically on the Looney deal, we are talking about a 2 year deal at 8 million per. Looney is a great rebounder with fantastic defensive numbers. He had a defensive rating of 106.9 (the top team rating was OKC at 16.6). And that's with playing guys like Steph and Buddy Hield. He also had a top 10 rim defense number according to NBA.com

He might not be able to play starters minutes but we don't want or need that and he isnt getting paid for that so...that's not a problem. If we get 15-20 from him and split the rest with Missi and Queen then we are good.

Pels are looking at a starting lineup of Zion, Pool, Trey, Herb and either Looney or Missi with Jose, Hawkins, Bey and Queen. We've also got Fears, a stretch 4/5 in Karlo to give us some different looks. I don't expect DJM to play this year.

The longest contract we have on the team is Trey, which is a great contract. I think we are just at a point where instant hot take reactions are leading to over reactions. The Indy trade sucked but nobody saw that coming. The Washington trade is fine, with a worst case scenario of one extra year of contract for Poole and Bey.

Its not like we are trading pieces from a conference champion to avoid the luxury tax or stretching a 113 million dollar contract. Everybody relax.

I thought maybe the Warriors got outbid, but it looks they've completely forgotten how to use a pen/computer :banghead:

You think the Warriors should have offered more?

In totality.

Slight overpay to get a pick from Indiana.
Huge overpay to move up in the draft for Queen.
Signed another big that will definitely eat into the minutes for Queen.

There was no realistic scenario where Queen was gonna
get starter’s minutes. We always needed a center. Sengun played about 20 minutes a game as a rookie, that’s a fair number to shoot for.

I remembered this guy wrecked havoc on the Mavs in the WCF years ago, etched in my memory

No one will be laughing at the Pelicans in October when we have Rick James starting at center

I'm ready to die on the hill that this was a good deal and Looney will be a steal at that number even if he averages just 15 minutes a game. He had better defensive stats in similar minutes as Kornet who is the same age and got paid almost twice as much as him.

Averaged 11 rebounds in 19 mpg against the lakers lol felt like that had to be some type of record.

For sure. Looney's been underrated his whole career, mainly because he's not a scorer. You get your money's worth with offensive rebounds, defense, and (big one) screen setting. Great low-key locker room guy too.

I think I prefer Looney and his deal over Kornet and his deal.

I think I would take Kornet. Looney is solid and I think both players got a fair number. Of course, I did just watch Kornet turn into Wemby that one gave vs my Knicks so there is some bias. Kornet is a legitimate 3 point threat, can block shots. He does that weird thing where he doesn't block a shot, but jumps so that you can't see the rim when you shoot.

Is he going to get the rebound? No, but that's why the world gave us Russ

With the hair it’s no contest. Kornet’s hair is quite weak in comparison.

Think my main concern with Kornet is he had two good seasons. So a bit of a gamble he will be just as good for the Spurs. Might just been an amazing fit in Boston.

For 3/4 MLE, his job is to play non-Victor minutes.
If he had to be a starter or 6th man... that's a problem. But his job is to allow Victor to play 32 mpg while keeping the team competitive for the other 16 minutes.

Looney - same deal. His job is to hold down the back up role.
Would you rather Looney for 8 or Val (trying to flee the continent) for 10? Depending on fit, between the three of them it could go any which way.

I love Looney and his per-minute stats are great, his problem is just that he really can’t play that many minutes consistently anymore because his body is breaking down. Honestly part of me blames the Warriors FO for never prioritizing getting another true C (not even a good one, just a big body to bang for 10-15 minutes a night in the RS)
