Relocation Thread

Post#1 » by DoItALL9 » Wed Sep 7, 2022 7:37 pm

This thread will be a place to discuss the possibilities of NBA franchises relocating to Seattle or elsewhere.

Recently, Adam Silver has repeatedly made comments to dissuade the public from the perception that the NBA will be expanding in the near future.

With the building of Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle has set itself up well to be a place that can take in an incoming team quickly.

The Charlotte Hornets franchise has set itself up to be in the city Charlotte for a long time. Michael Jordan's selling of a portion of ownership recently had made them interesting to watch for awhile.

I don't think they'll be moving anytime soon.

Relocation avoids one of the biggest issues with expansion - further dividing the TV revenue pie.

The NBA is a dollars and cents business. It's likely they only reason Seattle hasn't had a team granted to them already. Many owners and NBA officials have already shown regret or empathy for the situation in Seattle

It doesn't look like any team is being relocated at the moment but for the next 3 year's it looks like a relocated franchise is the only chance Seattle has.

"Silver also addressed a question about league expansion, which he told Suns employees the league will look at more closely once it is through its upcoming television rights negotiations. (The NBA's current TV rights package, a nine-year deal with ESPN and Turner Sports, is slated to expire after the 2024-25 season.)"

- Bring back the Seattle SuperSonics via expansion.
- Bring the Las Vegas Roadrunners or Vancouver Huskies into the league via expansion.
- Rename the Utah Jazz to Utah Stars (1971 ABA Champions @ Salt Palace and the Stars beat NBA teams).
- Rename the New Orleans Pelicans to New Orleans Jazz.

That's surprising and encouraging but they have a very good young core. It likely won't be (, shouldn't be) that bad in OKC next season.

I wonder where Seattle will fall on that list years two thru five? There's a good chance they could stay at 100% for a long while.

Bill Simmons asked some questions on a recent podcast that were thought-provoking.

Mainly, in 2023 how wed are the Thunder to OKC?

Does Clay Bennett have a price? The arena lease is something to question. I believe he said OKC had the worst attendance in the league last season.
Also, some of the other owners who originally started with Clay Bennett in Oklahoma have had quite a bit of turmoil over the years. Others may be interested in selling.

If Seattle and Vegas get the two new relocation franchises who would would be the top relocation city?

Vancouver, BC, Canada?
Mexico City, Mexico?

Definitely Vancouver. NBA players probably don't mind a game there once a season, but there's literally zero desire for them to want to be in Mexico City full time.

The Pelicans look like the team most likely to move at this time.
Their leases expires in 2029.
New Orleans needs a new arena.

"The building completed a multi-phase renovation in 2014 but according to a recent physical assessment, the Smoothie King Center has undergone minimal changes since opening in 1999. It also found most systems in the arena have reached or exceeded their expected usable life."

How much would a relocation fee be between now and 2030, approximately?

If expansion is potentially off the table, then we might as well entertain the idea.

Dick, you may get your wish after all.

I don't see a move in the immediate future. But if the Blazers land in the wrong hands, then anything is possible, as we all know.

I'm kind of getting tired of the people in that expansion thread to keep suggesting relocating another team to SEA or wherever else. And seeing the Blazers being sold and the specter of a new arena becoming the crux of any new deal... the clock is clearly ticking. I find it hard to believe that the PNW could be left without any teams.

Not a wish, just a prediction. I never believed the league was going to expand.
