There isn't any serious traction on this is there? This would be a completely moronic and unforgivable mistake by Roger's to hire Casey in any capacity. He underachieved in the playoffs and sacrificed playoff success for regular season success. He had no Xs and Os. You're going to replace Masai, one of the best in the business...with Dwane Casey??? Is this a joke?

To show how ridiculous and petty this is, this entire situation is solely the result of one man's vendetta from 5 years ago over a bruised ego and the belief that Masai was requesting too much money. Dumping Ujiri without a replacement in place was simply a dumb move and speaks volumes about the shortsightedness and sheer knee-jerk stupidity of Ed Rogers, as well as the clear role of Pelley as being not much more than a yes man.
Potential high level candidates aren't stupid. They see what happened to one of the most respected execs in the league. Does MLSE really expect any of them want to willingly enter that kind of environment? Nevermind that you just saddled them with a GM etc signed for the next 3 years whether they like it or not.
So that leaves the lesser-lights such as Casey, Eversley, etc. Bringing in a senior exec with a losing track record from a mediocre or poor organization sends a bad message to fans and likely also gets Bobby and others polishing up their resumes with one foot out the door.
Given that they are unlikely to attract an elite exec, their best scenario would be promoting from within. So move Bobby up and let him choose his new GM from whomever he can attract or promote. Right now, that's probably their best chance at saving some face in all of this.

I'm going to go with what other posters said regarding the coaching decision. I think we're panicking over nothing. They would have to know the optics and how weird it would be for Bobby (who they say, they like) and the front office to now work under the guy they fired. Unless Bobby and Dan were not as high up back then.

On another note. Imagine paying a consultant team to bring candidates for the job and Casey is actually on there list. What a joke.

After going back to page 15 and reading the update. I can see there line of thinking. Hire someone they know/like/have experience with (Casey/Marc) to assist Bobby and be underneath him. Kind of like having a guy on the inside to update you on what's going on.

Aka your snitch. The hire probably takes over in a year or 2 if this team doesn't perform. Which could very well happen.

Anything other than Bobby is so so questionable. They are too cheap for the tier 1 guys....

I'm just going to assume bringing Casey in is a favor. No way we that dumb

Didn't Pelley stress that the new president would have a business background, in his press conference after Masai was let go? Casey is not that, he's a basketball guy, came up through the coaching ranks.
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

This can’t possibly happen. What a bunch incompetent people for them to even consider marc or dwane. Hey guys we tried for pritchard but instead we went after casey lolol

Omari def got the leak from dwane. I remember during dwane’s pressers with detroit he was always buddy buddy with him

“Several rounds” for what? Guy isn’t even qualified to be the mascot

I joked about it initially but the fact a Casey hire might actually come to fruition is disgusting.

You guys can all question whether Masai has been successful over the last few years but atleast you can trust his leadership and vision. We all have confidence in him. What you cant question is that Keith/Ed are incredibly incompetent and don’t exactly know how to run the basketball organization. Does anyone actually trust they’ll make the right hire if its not Bobby?

He just used business leader but i think thats getting out of context. Raps are still a business. Pritchard smoke is prob accurate. Can speak corporate like shapiro and has basketball operations experience.

Pelley also said hes hiring a president of basketball ops and they will be heavily involved in basketball operations, who have experience in it and will work closely with bobby.

Whoever they are hiring / promoting will have final say in basketball.

This is some bad F'n news if this is true. If we choose Casey as executive, we're cooked. I've been on RealGM since 2010. Guys, I can't fathom going back to the dark days with the Raptors. Masai/Bobby gave me a sense of stability and competence that I haven't had in the Raptors since their inception. I understand some people got tired of Masai, but I don't think they were old enough to know how bad it can really get.

Such a shame because I warmed up to the idea of a new voice/vision for the team, but Casey's should not be it.

I think Casey is definitely on great terms with the media here. They will welcome him with open arms because he remembers their names. Bobby has always been pretty dismissive and curt in pressers.

I absolutely do not think Keith Pelley could handle being cross-examined by the media after hiring Casey

This is pretty much the worst case scenario for our team. This is a Bulls or Kings type of move that will set us back for years.

Those of you who celebrated Masai being fired, get ready for some dark years. Pelley looks like a sleazy used car salesman when he was trying to justify firing Masai. He literally didn't have a legit answer. All he gave us was corporate speak, something we didn't get with Masai. It's like the ghost of Richard Peddie is back.

All we can hope for is that these Casey reports are exaggerated and Bobby will get the president's job.

Why not give Bobby a chance to prove himself on his own for the duration of his extension?

Of course Rogers has to give us another reason to hate them more. Didn't think that was possible!

Randle is still here (but of course MIA in this thread now). The three of them were arguing that anyone would be an improvement over Masai.

Many of us were critical of Masai, but this was our fear with firing him . We have one of the dumbest owners in professional sports. The man can't be trusted to put his own socks on, let alone hire an executive for his sports team.

Casey would be a disaster and the only place for him would be in the game analyst booth like Sam Mitchell. I do not want this guy anywhere near a coaching or managerial role.

Bobby is obviously the most logical pick.

The only other guy I could think off potentially would be Steve Nash in a symbolic role because of who is is from Canada and how well respected he is around the league, but that would largely be ceremonial.

Agreed completely.

Okay, if the decision to cut Masai was purely financial (which was what they are all saying) and not performance related, the only logical move is to promote Bobby and move Tolzman into the GM position.

The Casey doom-posting is going to be hilarious to look back on when Bobby gets promoted.
