Oh thank god. I was worried there was going to be nothing to play later this fall.

The world is utterly massive and the crafting and building is awesome. Tons of POIs, exploring and discovery is so fun. I've played about 50 hours this go'round and I think I just got to the second main area of...five?
Good to hear. I keep glancing at it in my steam library. I remember when it first came out thinking me and the fellas would be locked in on it, but it didn't give us nearly the same joy as Valheim.

Looks good. I never played Skate before. Only ever really played T-Hawk 1 when I was a college freshman and it was one of the only games we played besides Crazy Taxi and Virtua Tennis. Isn't one of the central hooks to Skate the very funny physics engine? For some reason I thought I remember seeing funny viral videos of wipeouts.

Hollow Knight was fun for the few days I spent with it but hard games just aren't my speed anymore. I'll play them all for a week but I don't have the energy. Ninja Gaiden's probably gonna be the exception because I've got 20 years worth of muscle memory and reflexes ready to go. I also want to play games where I can just put the controller down every 30 seconds or so to watch baseball and Netflix.

So I picked up Three Houses for the first time in probably five years. I still don't love the monastery stuff, but I at least remember the strategies for recruitment. Also enjoying the story more this time around, I think.

Anyway, should tide me over until Borderlands, and from there it's basically a new banger every week or so until November.

This has been my major issue lately. Love me some MMORPGs, but if I NEED to be on Discord or attentive every minute.... I just can't do it anymore. F I hate getting older.

I love playing video games in 30 second bursts.

Woah, surprising to me with how big you've always been on Nioh, Elden Ring. But I also don't blame you considering they were never my speed.

TBH part of the reason why I've inevitably bailed on every ARPG over the last couple years is that they aren't as good as Elden Ring or Nioh. Lies of P, Wu Kong, The First Berzerker, Wuchang, Mortal Shell, Nightreign, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Blasphemous 2, Hollow Knight, Lords of the Fallen...I just don't find them that fun or satisfying. When I want to scratch the itch I inevitably just go back to Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, Nioh 1 or 2, and Elden Ring.

Elden Ring was that much better than Wu Kong? I've been considering both.

I think Elden Ring is the greatest video game of all-time.

Re: getting older, but I find myself more excited to play remastered/remakes of 20-year old games than I am with anything new on the market. I'll be hopping on to Metal Gear 3: Delta after spending the last few months pretty much exclusively playing Oblivion Remastered and FF7 Rebirth lol. I think I honestly just can't be bothered to learn new controls anymore.

Yes, the original series had "Hall of Meat" which was basically crashing challenges to inflict as much damage on your body/specific body parts as you possibly could.

At the time, Skate felt like a much more realistic alternative to Tony Hawk, a revolutionary at the time control scheme, and fun career mode while also having the silliness of the Hall of Meat.

This game does not include the career mode at all and seems to be leaning more into the unrealistic (maybe because other games like Session for example went the ultra-realistic direction).

I've played Session and was a beta-tester for the new Skate game. It's okay, but I personally greatly miss having the career mode. It's free to play so I may ultimately give it a go, but relative to the original announcement that they were bringing the series back, I'm definitely a bit disappointed in the direction they took the game. If you're looking for a realistic skater, nothing comes close to a modded version of Session IMO. There's definitely a balancing act of making it so realistic that it stops being fun though and I think Session can find itself on either side of that line depending on the day and my mood.

Some of the pains for me getting older are:

1. I can still hold my own in most sports games, but for example, the guys that spend hundreds of hours learning every dribble move in 2K are just way above my pay grade; I can play smart basketball and set myself up for good shots just by not forcing things but I am simply not capable of some of the things these teenage kids are doing in these games.

2. On the same topic, the race for everyone to find the meta builds in games like that drive me nuts. It's just completely unnecessary; build a player you think will be fun to use and just play the game. You're not going to notice much of a difference between the perfect meta build and your accidental creation of a similar player.

3. Some older games are just unplayable to me nowadays; the frames per second/motion blur in some of them like the Arkham series or the original Control game give me a headache within like 5 minutes of playing. Really bums me out because I just missed out on some games that would probably be very cool to play.

Not really related to Skate in any way, but on the topic of beta testing, there is now a playable demo on Steam for a game called Dead As Disco, which feels pretty promising. Think Sifu/Arkham style fighting inside of a music video lol. The idea is that the animations basically sync themselves to the music. Pretty cool stuff and the bits I've played so far sort of mix up the platforms a more 3D, open world fight into Daredevil-esq hallway fights into sort of the same thing but vertical rather than horizontal. It is a bit silly and I think there's probably a fair argument that if you're looking for this sort of fighting game, Sifu is simply a better version of it, but the music paired with the fighting is an interesting concept (which has sort of been done before with Hi Fi Rush right?)

Greetings my finest friends, has anyone upgraded the SSD on their PS5 themselves? Is it pretty straightforward to do? I'm more than comfortable with tinkering/building PCs etc. and have been living with the headache of the stock standard internal drive they ship with and moving games back and forth to an external usb drive.

Yeah, it's dead-simple. You don't need to replace it; there's a free slot to add a new M.2. I don't remember exactly what I got, but did it years ago and it took like three minutes top. 2 TB - voila. If you're comfortable with building PCs it'll be nothing to you.

Separately, I pretty happily played through POE2 on EA launch, but going back to it in .2 and now .3 feels like a chore. Everyone says how greatly improved it is, and I do see some of it with much more generous loot, a new sprint button, etc. But the campaign just feels awful to play over again. And I say this as someone who doesn't mind the campaign at all in POE1. In fact, I think I would go so far as to say I enjoy it. Something about the POE2 campaign just feels terrible to me, though. I think it's a combo of how long it takes (even only 2/3 complete :-? ) plus the fact that you have to have your brain on the entire time.

I'll come back again with each patch but, especially if they keep up with banger POE1 leagues as they say they intend to, I'm probably pretty tapped-out until/unless the feel of the game really changes more...which I do think will happen in time for a number of reasons.
