Void Kawhi's clippers contract, and don't allow him to resign.

This. All the talk in this thread of Raptors being compensated is off base. He was a UFA, plus the alleged offense happened on his next contract not 2019.

I don't think the Raps would get any compensation, so it's probably not an issue, but it isn't really comparing apples to apples to believe that it was somehow equal that the Clips actions "were an unfair advantage over all teams".

The Raps had the ability to offer a much bigger contract than any other team in the league at the time. Since this whole issue is about additional financial compensation, what the alleged deal did was eliminate the Raps' competitive advantage as the previous contract holder. Other teams in the league didn't have this advantage.

As for 2019 versus 2021, I think most are assuming that this was all an under the table agreement related to Kawhi deciding to join the Clippers in the first place, regardless of when he actually received the money.

I think the 2+1 deal made sense for him in 2019 given that it would get him to 10 years of service before he could opt out for the higher max on his next deal.

What I would look at more is that he took a 4 year extension instead of 5 years in 2021. That doesn't make too much sense for a guy with his extensive injury history to not lock up as much money as possible. Given what's come to light now, I think this is more relevant to look at.

Reading this, I'm more bullish that the NBA will actually come down on them. It's basically a textbook case. When the only termination clause is leaving the Clippers and the services rendered are zero, it's obviously compensation for basketball services. They weren't being subtle. And they were compensating him above the market value of Leo Dicaprio and Robert Downey Jr.

This company going under and this all becoming public is the perfect opportunity for the league to look tough on this - even if it's not much different from deals happening elsewhere. The excess of it, the sloppiness, and it all surrounds LA's 2nd favourite team and a star pretty much aging out of being that marketable anyway. I think they suspend Ballmer from basketball activities, maybe move the all-star game, and they could actually aim to void Kawhi's contract. I wouldn't have thought that when this news first broke but it just looks worse and worse.

Queue up the old turbozone meme that the CBA and Salary Cap is only designed to hurt the Raptors.

Balmer has a chance to become the Jerry Jones of the NBA if Silver sits around and does next to nothing

If all they do is give a $4.5M fine, I will laugh. That's setting bad precedent. Every owner will look at that and gladly pay if it means getting a game changing player for their franchise. I expect the NBA will come down harsher than that and force them out of 1st round picks.

The crooked clippers have been planning this since the 2018-19 season sending people from their organization to watch our games in Toronto and secretly talk to Kawhi on the street about their illegal plans

If it's only a fine, Raps should prepare a plan to bribe SGA.

We’d just have to hope they don’t find out before the contract ends, because then it would be voided

That said, Kawhi’s contract likely won’t be voided in this scenario, since the aspiration deal lines up with his previous contract, not the current one

Raptors came to terms with Kawhi leaving for his home town.

Now that we know he left for some shady money deal, I don't think he has any legacy left here in Toronto.
Dude should get booed if he ever returns.

Return to Toronto Raptors
