Re: Shams: Brogdon joins Knicks
I know Im gonna catch hate but if I gotta choose between keeping both Shamet and Brogdan or developing Kolek and Dadiet, im choosing te former. And thats why I didnt buy any of that narrative that we dumped Thibs because of player development. No, people who like player development said it was about player developmemt. People who were about rotations said it was rotation and people who didnt like isolation said it was about isolation.
Whatever you didnt like about him became the reason he got fired. Who knows but out of all the reasons, I just refuse to believe that on a contending team anybody in charge cared how much a 19yr old kid played and I still dont. Im not gonna lose out on getting guys who I believe would help us out in the most clutch of moments because we got rookies occupying thier roster spot. GTFOH.
We need a trade to open up two roster spots

I don't know how well Clarkson will fit. We got 4 guys in Brunson, OG, Mikal, and KAT who should all be getting buckets. The rest should be playing around them as cutters and spot-up shooters. Clarkson was accustomed to being no less than the 3rd option in Utah.
I could see Clarkson getting traded, with Shamet or even Garrison Matthews getting bumped up in the rotation, especially if Brogdon surprises us.
that's a vicious 10-man rotation if they're healthy.

Contract status doesn’t have anything to do with his ability on the court. I’m good with him or deuce starting tho.
If Brogdon looks like he did before his injury, once he shakes off the rust in camp/preseason, no reason he couldn’t be in the running for the spot.

i do think 6th man is his sweet spot. would be wild to have 2 winners off the bench murdering second units.
also, deuce's jumper and fresh legs are probably what we need in the SL. but word. i'm good either way. just loving the potential rotation no matter how we slice it.

Off the top of my head I really can't think of any other examples of guys that have been rotational players for years and have a ton of tape signing camp deals to compete for a roster spot outside of the Knicks. I wish I could find the exhibit 9 and 10 deals for other teams over the last couple years. I can only find guys like Kevin Knox, James Wiseman, Harry Giles and Jaden Springer signing these deals.
Marcus Morris comes to mind. Rotational player in Boston, then 23/24, then had non-guarantee deal with the Knicks. Then he declined a 2nd non-guarantee. I don't think Precious is a scrub, but it looks like his next deal will be a non-guarantee deal if he even returns to the NBA. Horford and Bucks probably going to end up with non-guarantee deals, too. This is more of a recent development where rotational players are getting squeezed. Good job, CBA/NBPA.
I forgot that Horford still hasn't signed and that doesn't make sense to me. He can still play and he fills a position of need for a lot of team. It wouldn't surprise me if he retires or is waiting for the Celtics to clear room to bring him back.
I'd also bring Precious back if I'm the Knicks. We know he is a serviceable regular season minutes eater and while we are hoping Hukporti fills that role, it's not guaranteed. With Robinson's injury history I would prioritize brining him back over Shamet

Brogdan wasn’t a defender in his prime and I doubt he’ll be better at it now. I really doubt they plan on starting him next to Brunson for that reason. I’m sure they’ll get some minutes next to one another but it won’t be a lot. If they’re planning on keeping both him and shamet it does lead me to believe they’re not looking to start with double bigs. Have deuce guard point of attack and let Mikal and OG do wing things.

See my above post re: Precious. We almost need to go Heatles style here where you switch up the lineup based on matchups. Spo was always so good at mixing in a guy like Rashard Lewis or another big when the rotation needed it.
In my example, Precious would be the flex big and likely Brogdon the flex small. On nights we play big, Precious would start at the 5 and would likely get DNP's on nights we go small, when Duce would start. You then ride the hot hand/matchup between Brogdon/Clarkson on the nights you play big.

Given the investment that went into putting this team together, the age of the primary players, and the state of the conference - everything is about maximizing the chances to win in the playoffs this year and next year.
Now is not the time to develop 2nd rd picks. There will be a time when we have an aging, expensive roster without control of our draft. Now is the time to make that pain worth it.

The Knicks don't have anything to offer in terms of picks, though. I think next season they can trade a 1st rounder again, but that's next season.
Is there a team with cap space that will take Kolek into their roster if the Knicks attach a future 2nd round pick?
Teams can use a trade exception to get Kolek instead of cap space. They can also use a full MLE or Room MLE as a trade exception.

ok. i see. non-guaranteed. might be more moves... or might not make it if cooked.
i'm with it. love this man.
I'm surprised by the non-guaranteed. I would think Brogdon has options.
All the same, I think we intend to open a spot for him. There's no one better on the marketSpoiler:
Brogdon might not be so interested in money at the moment. He has already earned $132,532,562 so far. Besides, he is pretty smart. He already holds a master's degree and could have attended Harvard.

Horford is waiting for the Warriors to figure out Kuminga. I actually thought Brogdon was too.
I think for Precious, I heard Miami was interested in him

Re: Shams: Brogdon joins Knicks
Mitch's trade is a strong possibility.
If we extend Mich, we are definitely getting into the second apron in 26/27 season (right now we have a 15.6 M apron space and just 9 players signed).
A team-friendly deal at the moment might not be very tempting to him, because the MLE will be around 15M, higher than his current salary. If Mitch is not too concerned about injuries, he can test next season's Free Agency. It should be a significant number of teams that can pay him around this amount.

I'm open to moving Kolek to add more size or defense but what would be the point of having Brunson, Deuce, Shamet, Clarkson and Brogdon all on guaranteed contracts and how do those pieces even fit together?

I mentioned this in another thread. Precious might no longer be a rotation player in the NBA.
6'8 guy who shoots 27% from three is not going to get consistent minutes unless he is ELITE athletically/defensively to compensate for it like the Thompson twins.
Precious is really good at basketball, but not a modern NBA fit. When I look at the lineups all the top 20 teams in the league are running or prefer to run, you don't really see guys like Precious for a reason.

The point would be having one of the deepest teams in the league ready for contention. We needed a backup play maker...now we have it. We are also embracing our identity as an offensively oriented squad.

They could both be if we move Kolek.
