Hassan Whiteside had a higher DBPM than Rudy Gobert in 15-16. Jokic had a higher DBPM than Wemby, Mobley, Green etc last year. Sabonis had a higher DPBM than Caruso, Anthony Davis, Bam Adebayo & Gobert in 23-24. Pretty sure it's known that this one is flawed, and probably overrates defensive rebounding in particular and can't measure stuff like pick & roll coverage/switchability, shots deterred/presence, contest efficiency & closeouts ++.
Aaron Gordon is currently making people shoot 11 % worse than league average, good for a hyperelite 97th percentile in the league, while Jokic is now in the 17th percentile, still in the bottom.
Murray is whatever on defense.
Braun is making people shoot 1 % worse, good for top 72nd percentile for his position.
Cam Johnson is bad.
Peyton Watson is good, top 69th percentile.

So you have one elite defender in Gordon, and two good defenders in Braun & Watson.
How do we know it's Jokic that is always leading the charge?

I acknowledge Jokic is a smart player, with great hands and reads of the game.

However, it's pretty clear that Aaron Gordon is the best defender one on one, so I feel like it's disingenuous to him to say that Jokic is actually the defensive mastermind, while Gordon had a positive defensive on/off last season, while Jokic had a negative.

I will give Jokic credit for being a smart defensive player, but I am not going to say positive until we get a bigger sample size, you have played two good teams at near full strength in the Warriors in game 1, and the Blazers in game 5. Miami without Bam & Herro, Warriors without Curry & Wolves without Ant doesn't count, so the schedule has been favorable to the Nuggets so far.

And they have a pretty easy schedule going forward, Pacers, Kings, dead Clippers before meeting Minnesota with an Ant that should be near 100 % again. That & a Bulls game will give us an better indicator of how solid the defense is against better competition.

I've a feeling the Jokic stans are going to try to convince us again that he's a great defender.

He'll never win MVP, we've seen him produce some insane stats and he almost always went backwards in MVP standings. It became a running meme among Mavs fanbase because it was always so ridiculous to see that. I mean, even now, averaging 40ppg with almost a triple double while shattering even more NBA and Lakers records, yet fans like yourself don't even see him as top3.

But on the other hand, SGA has insanely stacked team, a lot of help offense and defense, yet if you throw that as an argument it suddenly doesn't hold any value. But when Luka gets slight help, suddenly his MVP rating gets de-valued. So yeah...

Image

no Luka won't win because this stat has a huge caveat....Luka's first 5 games came intermittently during the lakers first 10...

honestly every year there is something...this year so far its Luka playing like a young AD...Street Clothes....I expect him to play more games and if he qualifies, he will be top 5 in MVP like usual. Wemby, Luka, SGA, Jokic and Giannis...

but Luka doesn't even qualify as a stat leader on NBA.com or ESPN cause he hasn't played enough games...so far Maxey is leading the league in scoring and no one has him as the MVP...and Austin Reeves does qualify and is 5th at 31.5.

https://www.espn.com/nba/stats

its Hard to argue Luka is the move valuable player when his team is getting the same production from Austin when Luka doesn't play and AR takes the Luka shots...the question is can Luka raise ARs game when Luka is there lol

but in all honesty...if Lakers top 5 in NBA and or top 3 in the west Luka going to have a strong strong strong case for MVP this year.

For the 100th time. No one says Jokic is a "great" defender. But the narrative that he only plays on one side of the court hasn't been true for several years now. He's an average to good defender. Grow up.

I'm usually a propoment of Jokic's defensive impact. this year i haven't been able to watch some of the games and the little i saw didn't look good and i even wrote about it itt

Now that i had the chance to rewatch some of them, i take it back. I actually like what Adelman is trying to do on D and Jokic has been instrumental in that success

I wouldn't read too much into defensive rating this early, Nuggets have played an easy schedule plus the benefit of opposing team's injuries (Minny without Ant, Dubs no Curry etc.)

They won't be a top 3 defense or how high they are rn but they can def be a top 10 defense coupled with an elite, world class offense and that should be enough to catapult them back into real contention

In particular they've been able thus far in this short season to generate scoring runs fueled by their defense, getting multiple conesecutive stops, stops turning to easy offense etc. We haven't seen them do it like that since their championship season

With Wemby stringing together some weak games and really coming back to earth, we're back to our usual suspects, SGA,Jokic,Giannis and Luka all neck to neck

He's not a good defender. I listened the stans going on about that for years but then I watched the series against OKC and he Eurobasket and his defense was much worse than I thought. So no he's not good defender he's a mediocre defender.

I think Giannis should be first. Even though it’s a weak eastern conference, no one was expecting to me this good (so far).

Jokic has warmed up already. He is low-key mind-blowing. He makes the game seem so effortlessness, yet dominant.

I hope everyone that gives opinion on him actually watches his games.
He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot.

I'm going to continue to marvel at Joker's greatness while people on this forum continue to hate him for no reason.

Watching Jokic is like watching Xavi + Iniesta in their prime. One more stat to show why he's the most entertaining player to watch in the league:

Free throw rate (amount of FT attempts per FG attempt)

Luka: 0.56
Giannis: 0.51
Wemby: 0.46
SGA: 0.43
Jokic: 0.27

I like how the same five guys have pretty much been the only MVP candidates for the last 7 years and counting.

Giannis
Jokic
SGA
Luka
Formerly Embiid and now Wemby

Is there any hope of breaking the stranglehold on the award? Probably not!

It makes MVP debates kind of dull when it's the same five guys every time.

Cade and Ant can breakthrough, they are close.
Defense wins draft lotteries!
Fortune favours the bold, so it ducked Nico Harrison.

He’s just on another level and then his defense is better (isn’t this what people complain about the most) And if Denver finishes with a better record than they ever had he would deserve MVP.

People have been saying "no way he maintains this" every year this decade, but he continues to further elevate his game. I wouldn't put anything past him at this point.

The guy just never has a bad game. His "worst" game this year, still had a triple double and made 8 baskets. Just remarkably consistent and exceptional.

His numbers may come down slightly from his current averages, but...

Jokic last season: 30-13r-10a on 66TS%

Jokic in 23-24: 26-12r-9a on 65TS%

Jokic in 22-23: 24-12r-10a on 70TS%

Jokic 21-22: 27-14-8 on 66TS%

Jokic 20-21: 26-11-8 on 65 TS%

I don’t think people hate on him just other fans show his flaws like they do with Giannis but these are the two best players in the league and have been for years now. I prefer Giannis while others prefer Jokic but both are just consistently great every year. My wish is they meet in the finals this year.
