I think the best part of that article was the mention of a potential Brad Wilkerson signing.

Yes. Although they say it's a one-year deal, and like most of us have agreed, this team's time horizon out to be more than one year. But maybe Wilkerson could buy more time for Balentien and then Saunders to develop.
The most disturbing part was the reference to the "Venezuelan Winter League Fantasy Playoff Challenge." That's a cry for help.

That was my line of thinking; Wilkerson

Last I heard it was Jones/Sherrill/Tillman and some other prospect for Bedard. I hope that other prospect isn't named Clement, Morrow, Balentien, Truinfel, Aumont, or even Butler, for that matter.
Enough's enough.
Well, Rotoworld says it's "Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman, Adam Butler and Kam Mickolio" for Bedard. I'm guessing that's a typo w/r/t Butler's first name, but that's a staggering amount of talent. At worst Baltimore has someone who'll play OF for them for the next several years and a completely rebuilt bullpen.
If Bedard gets hurt...what happens? There's not much in the organization that would make a great replacement and you've just gutted your minor league pitching depth by making the trade.

Speculated comment on RotoWorld about the deal:

Unconfirmed speculation on a Baltimore radio show is that Adam Jones has a degenerative hip condition that's put the Erik Bedard deal on hold.

And now Johan is a Met, for what appears to me to be a less valuable package than what the M's are supposedly trading for Bedard. (I mean, are Carlos Gomez and Philip Humber any better than Adam Jones and Chris Tillman, respectively? Humber is farther along than Tillman, but I thought his proverbial star had dimmed over the last year or so.)

I wonder how much the Twins were handcuffed by Santana's NTC. I know Santana explicitly stated he would not waive it to come to Seattle...

I had the same thought. As did everyone else who is smarter than me and knows what they are talking about online. This may shock some people...but Bavasi may have a pretty poor grasp of value on the open trade market...

I also think the Twins took the Mets offer to get Santana out of the American League. The Mariners, Yankees, and Red Sox probably offered more than the Mets but the fact that they are all American League teams probably hurt them.

I think it's pretty clear what's happening now: Bavasi is eager to pull the trigger, while Andy McPhail (completely aside from Peter Angelos) is happy to drag it out. Especially now that Johan is off the market and Bedard is the top prize on the market. Baltimore can still attract alternative offers or even coax more value out of Seattle. If all of that falls through, they know they have Bavasi by the cojones, the way he's tipped his hand over the last few weeks. They can come back and accept what was previously proposed and have a deal. If the M's want to get it done, they should impose some kind of time limit.

There's a lot of different ways the M's should handle and should have handled this whole mess...but that time's gone. The way this trade has been handled has been an absolute disaster, from jerking Jones in an out of lineups to players talking about what's going on to the press. It's no way to run a franchise.
Baltimore also can gamble that Seattle's in a spot, due to what's been told to the outgoing M's players and how this has been played out in the press, where if a deal doesn't go through they look genuinely incompetent. Good job of telling players they're traded and letting them blab to the press before the deal's been entirely consummated and done. What a joke.
Normally I would think with Bedard the top prize on the market that the O's are going to try to extort a better deal out of the former Santana suitors...but Angelos wouldn't trade Bedard to the Yanks or Sox regardless of how good the deal is.

I still see the trade happening by the weekend or early next week.
Now that the Santana deal went through, Bedard is the top pitcher available meaning that the O's will try to get a better offer out of Seattle.
Knowing Bavasi, he would probably throw in Clement or Morrow.
If we don't get Bedard, I would be just as happy because we get to keep Jones. Plus, the 2009 Free Agent pitching class is loaded with talent including C.C. Sabathia, John Lackey, Oliver Perez, Ben Sheets, and AJ Burnett.

He throws in Clement, Triunfel, Morrow, Aumont, Balentien...anything more than is supposedly already on the table, screw him. At some point you have to know when to walk away from a deal. IMO, Jones, Tillman, Sherrill, and some lesser prospect is ENOUGH. I'm already leery of throwing in Butler.

100% Agree! I'm on board with this trade, but this is turning into a joke and if the O's keep up this crap at some point you need to put you're foot down. Its a great deal for the O's as it stands if they want more walk away!Bulltalk wrote:-= original quote snipped =-

Luis Gonzalez just signed with the Marlins...so that probably leaves Wilkerson as a stopgap option in RF for the M's if the Bedard deal goes through.

I'm sticking to my "McPhail is jerking Bavasi around" theory, and I seriously hope Bavasi pulls the plug on this one unilaterally. That's in part because I never liked the trade in the first place (maybe I can buy into Tillman or Butler, but not both), but also because I fear for the organization's credibility. Bavasi's actions have cried out "I'm desperate to do a trade for short-term benefits" throughout this whole process. It's like our organizational poker face has been completely lost. We need to get it back.
