^^ That's exactly what i figured. By saying that, it would mean that the Yankees wouldn't give into the Red Sox and Twins both trying to drive his pricetag up. If johan declines a trade to the Red Sox, that means his only other realistic home would be the Yankees. If the twins take Kennedy, Melky, Jackson then we have Johan, if not, the Twins will lose Johan via free agency and he can come here and we wouldn't lose any prospects.TKF wrote:-= original quote snipped =-
that is more than enough. take out tabata and I still think that is enough..
You know what. johan needs to say, I will decline every trade unless it is the yankees, and then if the twins don't comply, let him go on the FA market and the yanks can just pay for him that way.. at least boston doesn't get him this year either...

I wouldn't. Hughes will probably be better over the next 15 years than Santana will be. Although, in the next 2-3 years I expect Santana to be better. Hughes will be cheaper. We know Hughes can do it in pinstripes. His September and October numbers were off the charts, especially because he is 21.
These are no knocks on Johan, I think he is the best pitcher in the game. I just don't think it is a wise decision. I still want Johan and I'd give up Kennedy and prospects to get it done but anything more than that and I would walk. -Jitpal

LinkOdds and Ends: Tavarez, Lieber, Stewart
Another collection...
A few notes from Brian Cashman...the Yanks have talked to Luis Vizcaino's agent about bringing him back. Also, they've yet to inquire on any free agent center fielders.
Miguel Cabrera has been talking to Ozzie Guillen daily since the season ended. The article makes Cabrera sound like a big kid.
The Red Sox have had a couple of inquiries on Julian Tavarez.
Five or six teams have inquired on Shannon Stewart, who wants a two-year pact apparently.
The Phillies, contrary to previous reports, are not interested in re-signing Jon Lieber.
On a scale of 1 to 10, the chances of the Astros trading for a Miguel Tejada were rated a 2. The 'Stros don't want to give up the farm. That's also why Joe Nathan is unlikely for Houston.
Scott Boras recently called Ed Wade to sell him on Eric Gagne, Jeff Weaver, and Rodrigo Lopez. Wade seemed unimpressed.
Nothing much new on the Padres front - still interested in Kosuke Fukudome, Geoff Jenkins, Jim Edmonds, Darin Erstad, and Mark Prior.
Brian Cashman's phone has been ringing off the hook about Melky Cabrera.
Interesting...-Jitpal

I am not suprised. young outfielder with upside, cheap contract, good defender and a cannon of an arm...

With everyone partying in Nashville tonight, there's not going to be a lot more dealing until they all come back around 1 or 2 AM half crocked, be my guess.
One deal hangs by a thread.. the mystery deal.
Other than that, the latest buzz is no buzz. The Bay/Snell/Marte deal to the Yankees was overheard in the suite area by my source and he thought it was legit. He still thinks they are talking, but for who or what he doesn't know.
Perhaps it's for Marte as the media has speculated? But that's a simple deal for New York.. it doesn't take days to pull the string on him. Even if overpriced, it still doesn't add up to Yankee tip money at a meal.
So perhaps my source is right and things are stalled. We'll have to wait and see.

Same site that was reporting the latest in the Melky-Mike Gonzalez talks last offseason.
Marte makes a ton of sense. Snell makes some sense too. Bay? Not so much. Not unless he wants to pick up a first baseman's glove because I don't think I can stomach a Bay-Damon-Abreu outfield.

Maybe the yankees are planning on flipping Matsui to SF like another post suggested. then flipping a few players over to Pit. where it would leave us with a Bay/Damon/Abreu Outfield. if that happens tho id expect the yankees to go after Mike Cameron. cause i remember they wanted to trade for him a few season ago

The Yankees appear to be interested in CF Corey Patterson. Patterson's a top notch defensive CF with speed.

Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't he connected to PEDs? Also he has no plate discipline and a horrible fielder. If we were to sign Patterson, I would imagine someone is gone. Maybe Matsui to SF? Would Patterson accept a backup role? I think Melky, Abreu and Damon should start over him. -Jitpal

Yeah he's linked to PEDS and his plate discipline is pretty bad but he's hardly a horrible fielder. He's actually one of the top fielders at his position, has a very strong arm and can steal bases (37 last season in only 460 ABs).

Put him at the bottom of the lineup and he'd be fine. You'd be playing him for his defense, arm and speed on the bases.

Even as a Met fan... I feel compelled to defend Cashman here.
I don't agree with how Hank is going about business here... He's basically putting Cashman on the hook for this Santana trade. If Santana goes on and posts a 2.6 era and Hughes continues to go through some growth pains Cashman is done. Even as a New York fan, I can't believe the amount of **** that Cashman has to put up with... It really is almost unfair to him. Hank is like the old George but instead of keeping things in house he lets them spew onto the streets. For Cashman, you're damned if you don't and you're damned if you do. If he approved the Santana trade and Hughes goes on to be the next young Ace, Hank wouldve had fits. If Hughes fails and goes through some growing pains, Hank wouldn't have the patience to stick with Hughes. If Santana has a sick sick sick season and Hughes struggles? All bets are off for Cashman. I hope he doesn't get canned. He's the one who engineered the whole youth/sign high ceiling draft picks/ and the movement away from signing fat, 32, just falling out of prime MLB starters.
Finally, the Yankees have built up their farm system and have quality in their future and Hank wants to ship them all away for a 29year old pitcher who may be on the beginning of his decline- not to mention that he wouldve needed to be signed for 150 million (If he went to the Yankees... Book it that Santana wouldve demanded 175 million).
edit:
And I do NOT personally believe Santana is falling out of his prime at 29. I think he still has a solid 3-4 years with us before we see a marked decline in his ability to be dominant, especially in the NL.

Pitching in NY (and to a lesser extent Boston). It's that one x-factor that you don't know until you do it and then it's usually too late. Many pitchers have not been able to adjust to NY and even though Santana is the best of the bunch, you never know.
