They're renaming Legends Field in Tampa Steinbrenner Field in honor of Georgey boy. Good gesture. Love him or hate him, Steinbrenner was an influential figure on the game and especially the Yankees. Here is an owner that actually cares about winning. He would get pissed off and curse out everyone after losing one game. Dolan on the other hand chuckles after back to back blowouts.

Without him there would be no Legend's Field. He deserves it.

Yes, he can/will be bought out for $5 million after this season rather than paying him $22 million next season. Unless he wins the MVP this year, he is as good as gone along with Abreu's $16 million, Pettitte's $16 million, Mussina's $11 million, Pavano's $11 million, and Farnsworth's $6 million. A lot of dead weight comes off after this season.

What is interesting is, according to Ian Kennedy (who lives in Nevada & has seen Giambi) apparently Giambi is in the best shape of his life. I wonder why, can you say contract year?
I think if Abreu does well we might re-up on him. It all depends on our prospects development. I think Andy will retire & Mussina will not be given another deal. Pavano is gone but Farnsworth it all depends on how he does this year.
What sucks about Giambi is that we most likely won't get draft picks because if we offer arbitration Giambi would accept it because he wouldnt get a contract nearly as good as what he'd get from us at the arbitration hearing.

If he is in that good of shape, then that can only be great for us and for him in terms of a new contract. A healthy Giambi clearly makes this lineup much different and much more scary, he is a .420 OBP guy in the middle of the lineup. Having Jeter-Abreu-Rodriguez-Giambi all in a row is four consective .380-.420 OBP hitters, and when you take Giambi out of that equation it really takes away a certain dynamic to this offense...a healthy Giambi can be a huge difference maker. He doesn't have to hit 45 home runs anymore, hit 25-30 and get on base at an incredible rate.
I agree about Abreu. His future will be decided based on not necessarily what he does this season, but what Tabata and Jackson do in the minors this season. If they progress as they should, we can dump Abreu and find a 1 year stop gap. If not, we may be obligated to throw him a multi year contract.
