Bucks-Hornets Postgame Thread 1/21/08

Just an opinion, but I believe the Bucks are one of the worst teams I have seen at defending the pick and roll. Simply no effort to fight through a screen and no communication between the two defenders involved.

I watched the game on DVR afterwork tonight.

BTW, league pass is on free preview today and presumably thru the week for Time Warner customers.

I listened to the Hornets broadcast which is always really interesting.

They ripped on CV the entire game. I mean the entire game, one announcer kept mocking him "take another jumper Charlie NewCity".

He literally said "I don't put any value into a guy who's 6'11 and all he wants to do is take jumpshots. If that's all you're going to give me, then you're not worth very much."

Unlike many who undervalue Redd's contributions the Hornets announcers said "If anyone on the Bucks is going to get it done, it's Michael Redd. He's the only guy who can bring it every night on the offensive end"


As far as the game I thought we played a solid first half. We were getting consistently beaten on the offensive rebounds and couldn't seem to box out. The Hornets interior defense did a great job of not allowing the Bucks to get it to Bogut.

Redd played well within the flow of the game in the first half. Plenty of times though, when Redd gets the ball he is only looking to score. A couple of times he took it all the way up the floor, to Mo's dismay, an took it himself on the offensive end. He was doing a good job of mixing it up though, between perimeter jumpers and drives to the rim.

The second half they just seemed to go on a run. They started to run it more. Paul was finding Tyson Chandler for some big dunks. Chandler couldn't be stopped on the offense glass.

They were going to the rack and taking free throws. Both Peja and Mo Pete were on fire from outside. Once again poor perimeter defense.


Bogut was struggling to convert when he would get the ball inside. They were bring double teams on him and they were hounding him. A couple times Yi got the ball in the post and they immediately go to strip him.

Mo started finding his shot and Redd started to just take the ball. Villanueva was taking jumpers all day. I only saw him take it inside once out of probably twelve shots. He had a decent stat line, but his contributions weren't game changing.

Yi just looks lost out there. He's not even playing good defense anymore. Here and there he'll get a weakside block. But his inability to box out defenders is a real problem. I wanted Ruffin or Voskuhl to come in and try and box out Chandler earlier. I didn't think CV or Yi deserved too much time tonight.

After all the pathetically stupid game moments the Bucks' have had during the season, I have finally come to believe that LK is a terrible coach and a new, perhaps more veteran staff is needed.

Oh and, have the Bucks won a game yet after Redd returned?

Lol, I was thinking the same thing. I think the "black hole" comment, if that was made, shows that they dont know what they're talking about.

You're not the only one who shares that opinion. If you don't watch the Bucks it's impossible to believe how bad and how ignorant they are much of the time defensively. It really has to be seen to be believed. The problem is, the longer you watch them the more nauseated it becomes.

Redd was outstanding in the first quarter and very good in the first half. He was on the boards and made a few nice passes. But he was terrible in the second half. I think the one thing everyone will agree on is Redd is a terrific shooter but outside of one game, his shooting has been awful since his return. There's no reason for that to occur. The one constant in his game should be his shooting but it has gone south lately.

IMo the New Orleans announce crew was as bad as it gets, seems all there info was based on last year, not this year.

I'm not sure if anyone has posted this yet (if someone has, I apologize for reposting it), I find it very interesting that the Bucks' were 3-1 without Redd and when he finally did return they are a dismal 1-4. Of course it's sometimes foolish to draw inferences, but it is worth noting that the team seemed to function more like a unit without Redd.

I've been a huge Redd supporter up until this year...but, something really needs to change quickly. He may be a great human being and all that jazz, but when it comes to being smart on the basketball court he keeps demonstrating how inept he really is.

Excellent point. That has come back to annoy me a little because he made that comment and came across as a hard arse, but we haven't exactly been seeing an Ivey-Bell-man down-Ruffin-Bogut line up too much.

Mo was not defending Paul for most of the night. But he was defending Paterson during that time when Paterson hit all that 3 pointers. Mostly because Mo Williams always have something better to do rather than being with his man. I watch him and he always has some "inteligent" idea what to do at defense and it is almost funny really. He leaves his man at the 3 point line and he is geting pose in the paint like some inteligent leader of defense. I think that's how he get rest and save energy. I mean he can't be that stupid really.

I could make those passes.

How about Bogut keeping his body on his guy?

Bogut defended West most of the night. It was coach decision that West is more dengerous scorer so Bogut was on West and CV or Yi or Gadz was on Chandler. Bogut played one of his best defansive games last night. Almost perfect honestly.

Yup. 90% of times when his man score it was because Andrew had to help his pathetic guards and there was nobody behind Andrew to take his man. In that regard we miss Mason big time as Desmond was only one who was helping Bogut when Bogut help his "guards"
