Mid-season grades
Since the season is halfway over i thought i'd make a topic grading the players and coach.
C. Anthony- He has stepped up his rebounding but it still seems like something is missing. B+
A. Iverson- Done everything asked of him and has been a solid player all year, I wish he would pass a little more off the pick and roll. B+
A. Carter- Came out of nowhere to really spark this team, lately he has slowed down a bit but he's also had to step up his playing time. B+
K Martin- Played well and been set-back free for the most part. His D on power forwards is something this team missed last year. B
M Camby- Not sure what more you can ask out of this guy, some nights he and k-mart are the only ones playing D. A+
L. Kleiza- It's a shame he's not in a SG's body because he's played great this year, best off the bench. A
E. Najera- Been the hustle guy as always and improved his outside shot over the offseason. B
J. Smith- Some argue he doesn't get the minutes to shine but when he does play he's a yo-yo. Are his days numbered? C-
Y. Diawara- One of our better defenders but his offensive game is so bad that he can't get much PT. D+
C. Atkins- Hasn't been healthy all season but tried to get back on the court, just didn't produce. C-
Nene- It's just one thing after another with this guy, Hopefully the cancer was the last of it. Incomplete
V. Wafer- Youngins never get a chance with GK, that's not his fault. Incomplete
S. Hunter- Who???
G. Karl- I'm gonna give him a B and that might be the best he gets on realGM. He's got an injured team in position to win the division and almost 10 games above .500, might make some poor decisions but i'm not sure who would have handled our team better up to this point. B

Carmelo Anthony - he definitely had a stretch where his offense was off-kilter for a little while there. his defense and rebounding have improved leaps and bounds over last season, I can remember multiple times when he completely shut down an opposing teams' best or second best player. the glaring hole in his game is the slowness or complete lack of defensive rotations when he double teams someone and the ball is passed out of the double. that or he just loses track of his man while watching the ball on defense. A-
Allen Iverson - he's been having a great season, shooting the second best fg% of his career, and his defense has even been more or less adequate, except, as with Melo, when it comes to making those rotations on defense. in that last game against the lakers, AI didn't leave his doubles quickly enough, or just didn't stay on derek fisher, and dfish just lit us up like a christmas tree. A-
Marcus Camby - his presence defensively has been undeniable. I would like to see him drive to the basket more instead of taking so many shots from outside, unless of course he is having a good shooting night. otherwise he has been solid as a rock. A
Kenyon Martin - has an energy defensively that we have missed, and he isn't afraid to get physical down on the block. his play following multiple knee surgeries and rehabs has exceeded nearly all of my expectations. he does have a tendency to take weird quick jumpshots early in the shot clock in 2 on 4 or 2 on 5 situations, but he hits them just often enough for me to not really care too much. B+
Anthony Carter - for me, the obvious good surprise of the season. his passing has gotten better in almost every game and he isn't afraid to exploit holes in the opposing teams defense created because of doubles/triples on Melo or AI. his defense is great, but he is often matched up against players that are just too big, tall and strong for him, but that's not his fault. B+
Linas Kleiza - his defense and offense continue to get better. I remember seeing him play for the Nuggets for the first time during the summer league following his drafting and being excited about his potential. I'm glad to see him starting to really develop as a player in the nba. he still has a lot of work to do, but he is invaluable to the Nuggets coming off the bench right now. B
Nene - just when he started to get into a groove he finds a testicular tumor and has one of his balls removed. I'm just going to grade him on the time he actually played for us because it's not as if he gave himself testicular cancer. C+
Eduardo Najera - his 3 point shooting was a very pleasant surprise early on, but seems to have tapered off of late. I would like to see him take some 12-15 footers now and then when they are available, but I can't complain too much. that being said, you couldn't ask for a whole lot more from your teams best hustle player. B
Earl Smith Junior - there have been flashes of brilliance punctuated by moments of frustration within seconds of each other with him, but his potential remains untapped. when I consider how well he played with Melo early last season I have a hard time believing he couldn't still become a very very good player with the Nuggets. It seems like he lacks concentration at times, but that is to be expected from most players who are 21 years old. C+
Yakhouba Diawara - when he has been on the court his offense has been markedly improved from last season, and his defense remains excellent. this is a case in which I can find very little explanation for his extremely meager playing time. C+
Von Wafer and Steven Hunter - who knows.
chucky atkins - it would be one thing if during the time he was playing he was hitting 3 pointers, but that was most definitely not the case. add to that the complete lack of defense and inability to drive the lane. while it isn't fair to blame the occurrences of injuries on the players, when they rush themselves back and re-injure themselves, it's difficult not to be frustrated. LK's been decent, but he needs to get his 3fg% up to where it was late last year before i'd consider an A.
Gave chucky the C- cause he at least got out there and tried to play, he wasn't 100%.....then again this is the Denver Nuggets were talkin bout

Anthony- He has stepped up his rebounding and his defense, but he had a stretch of bad games. B
Iverson - the scoring is there as always, but so are the turnovers B
Carter - Pleasant surprise B+
Camby - He does what is asked of him, passes well for a big man, and plays defense, but I would love to see him take it to the hole more. B
Martin - Never thought we would get the minutes and production we are getting from him, and his defense has anchored this team as much as Camby's. B+
Kleiza - Has some good games, one great one, and a bunch of games where he disapears. B
Najera - Does the little things, plays for the team and plays hurt. B
Smith - his minutes are too inconsistant to really judge/gauge with a grade, so.... B-
Atkins - before the second injury he was only hitting 27% from the floor, and that isn't what he was brought in to do. D-
Diawara - He is what he is, never complains, accepts his role, and he won helped win a couple of games for us so far. B-
Nene - Hasn't played enough to grade, but his last two or three games he was starting to look good. C+
Hunter - probably wishes he was 6 feet tall with a handle right about now. No grade
Wafer - should have been waived instead of Bobby Jones
Karl - Why is he still here again?

Anthony B+: He disappointed me for a good three weeks this season but he's since picked up his play by playing solid defense and rebounding. He only needs to work on his decision-making in the fourth quarter.
Iverson A: Surprised me with his level of play this season. He's been the all-round best player on this team if not the most valuable. Scoring on high percentage shots, above average assists and turnovers are down. And his defense is actually underrated. However I have a sneaking suspicion that he's going to be burnt out by the end of the season with the minutes he's playing and the scoring load he's been required to carry.
Carter B+: Another surprise. Playing great basketball and certainly playing above his pedigree. Solid shooting, good defense. Keep doing what he's doing...
Camby A: Camby is the MVP of this team because the entire scheme depends on what he is able to do rebounding and as a help defender. Nobody on the team can replicate what he does, which is probably why this team is so inconsistent. My only criticism is his staying on the perimeter during offensive sets and unwillingness to cut to the basket.
Martin B-:Been better than expected but he's inconsistent and prone to inopportune fouls. Need him to keep playing at this level as long as he doesnt get hurt.
Kleiza A:Playing great, his defense is okay and I like his aggressiveness and unwillingness to defer to melo and AI. this team needs that from its role players.
Najera B-: Inconsistent and fouls too much. This may be because Karl plays him out of position on defense. Needs a better second half of the season.
Smith C-: Got to find a way to get out of the coach's doghouse. Smith is absolutely necessary to this teams success. He's the best shooter on this team and has the most potential as a defender in the backcourt. But he keeps giving the coach an excuse to bench him when he turns the ball over or takes an ill-advised shot.
Atkins I: Been injured and when he played he didnt show much. This was a bad pick up in the off-season.
Diawara C+ - Over-rated but good fodder off the bench
Nene D: Injury prone due to poor conditioning. This cancer scare is sad but the team needs to make a trade.
Karl B-: I'm kind of torn on the coach. I think the fans are overly critical but I do agree with some of the criticisms. He doesn't use his pieces the way he should and his game management with regard to calling time outs is subpar. He also needs to start pulling AI when AI walks the ball up the court. That said he's done an above average job managing the egos on this team which I think people don't appreciate as much as they should. I also think that his over-all strategy on both ends of the court is excellent given the pieces that they have. He understands when to use zones and how to play to their strengths. He understands that his interior d is strong so he tries to get the perimeter players to bate teams inside. This works with teams that like to go inside but doesn't work with teams that can spread the floor with shooting beyond the arc. Unfortunately all the great teams have the ability to shoot outside. They either need to start using a shooter like JR who can defend on the perimeter or they need to trade nene for a long perimeter defender that can shoot.

Melo B+: He's had his struggle in the early stages of the season and is now improving on his rebounding but his defense is a little inconsistent at times, hopefully he can have a big second half of the season.
Iverson A: He's played well and is shooting a career high from the feild and he's hit some big shot late in games, hopefully he can continue his strong play for the remainder of the season.
Camby B +: He's having a great season and has been healthy for the most part, hopefully he can cut to the basket more often and limit down those jumpers.
Kenyon B+:Im glad he's back this season,he's been good mostly defensively, hopefully he can stay healthy as i think he's our best defender on this team.
Carter A : He's been the biggest surprise so far this season, also a solid defender for his size, hopefully he can keep up his play and consistently knock down the open j when giving the chance.
Kleiza B+: Solid player coming off the bench, improving every year and has been playing great in the absense of melo, hopefully he can keep up his play for the remainder of the year and be that consistent scoring punch off the bench.
JR C : This kid got lots of potential but sometimes plays out of control, but when he plays within himself and the team he's been solid, hopefully with consistent playing time he will continue to get better.
Najera B : He's a good role player to have and have been solid when he's healthy and he's also a tough guy given all the pain he plays through, also the only consistent guy that cuts to the basket.
Karl B : Given the state of the team with alot of injury and were still 10 games above .500 is still solid, he needs to manage his rotation better and not overplay the stars, he also needs to call timeout faster when the momentum swings to the opponent, all in all an okay job.

Melo -B Still holding the ball way too much, and still not a defensive presence. But his rebounding of late has been a suprise, sky is still the limit.
AI -B Dribbles and holds the ball entirely too long, too much of a gambler on defense. Shot selection can be terrible, but this is who AI has been his entire career. A future hall of famer that I think still has a lot in the tank, I just think he doesn't fit well on our team.
K-Mart -B+ Best one on one defender on the team, medical miracle to be doing some of the things he does on the court after the micro fracture surgeries. His shot selection is questionable, but shot selection is contagious, and look who he plays with. I don't think we could ask for more at the current time.
Camby -A Having a great year, has been staying unbelievably healthy last 2 years. Deserves to start the all-star game more then AI and Melo, best help defender in the league. Hopefully he keeps it up. Scary to think where we'd be without him.
Carter -B+ look up overachieving in the dictionary, and you'll see AC's first half of the year to date. Guy has been solid, but lately has been tailing off with shot selection, and decision making. It would be nice to see AC for 20-25 minutes a night compared to the 35 he's getting now. Brace yourselves for a 2nd half of the season, he's coming back to earth.
Kleiza- B Kept the boat afloat lately with melo being out, from a scoring perspective. Good aggressive player, that is on coach's good side. Has shown some of his potential, but his shot selection sucks, (but look who he has to model himself after on this team) he is a jacker, and as much of one as JR was last year. If he's making his shots, great, if he's missing em, watch out.
Najera- B- Liked the guy way more when he didn't worry about shooting jumpers. Still brings hustle and intensity, looks like he comes to play every night. Doesn't hurt that he knows who's house to show up to for dinner either.
Nene- C I pray the guy gets better, and makes a full recovery. Even before the injuries and cancer, he isn't living up to the contract, some of the blame has to go on coaching for not making an effort to get him touches, but I can't stand him coming in outta shape.
Atkins- F I know he's been injured, but this grade is based on what I see. He can't play a lick of D, he can't do much on offense other then shoot, and we saw how effective he is when he can't make shots. I'd like to chalk him up as a bad signing and move on.
JR- C The guy needs minutes, and doesn't need to get pulled for making the same mistakes other players on the team make, and they don't get pulled for. Looks really good for games, then doesn't play for games, streaky shooting this year, more so then last, but I attribute some of that to streaky minutes. He'll be gone by the trade deadline, and we can go back to wishing we had a 2 with half the potential he has.
Kuba- C Good defender, worst offensive player on the team.
Wafter- INCOMPLETE Haven't seen enough of him.
Hunter- INCOMPLETE Haven't seen any of him.
Karl- D- The only reason he doesn't get an F is because we're 10 games above .500 with all the injuries. He can't manage a game, call timeouts, sub accordingly, make in game adjustments...etc. etc. He can't manage or develop young talent, he can't get over his own ego, he doesn't relate well to many players aside of Najera, and Kleiza. He can't manage superstars, ie. see Milwaukee's big 3. Has all the talent in the world, and still manages to bitch about talent, or us lacking pieces. I've never been more ready to see a coach leave.

Everyone still has to give the best they have. We've seen better, from Karl too.
Thing is, it's always 59% winning record. When Karl can hold 65, 70% consistently regardless of injury he will have bested himself.
Winning record like that, with injuries....that's maybe a sign of a professional of his level. It's not what happens to you, it's what you do when *** happens to you.

Good point, but outside Rick Carlisle and maybe Scott Skiles there aren't many good coaches out there and Karl is currently one of the better X's and Y's coach in the league.
