This is dumb. Kobe just plays basketball. He's a versatile off-guard/swingman. The fact that so many guys appear to be copying Jordan and the idea that Jordan drew aspects of his game from guys who played before him leads me to one conclusion. There's an effective way to play the position that most NBA players use, and how well they do it is generally related to their ability.

i second this. You have to be good to execute the things that make certain positions succesful. You look at whos had the most success and try and figure out why. Certain tools help them. So if you have some of the tools Jordan has so what. They don't belong to jordan, they belong to the game. Those tools helped jordan win, so why not understand how to incorporate the tools into your own game if you can. You still have to be able to produce a favourable outcome which alot of people can't. The next person who comes along I'd encourage them to learn whatever they feel will help them in their position regardless of whom it's from. If they can master it more power to them. If they can get those tools which belong to the game and get a favourable outcome thats great. What they do as well will contribute to how the game should be played. I'd encourage the next person to take advantage of this contribution

The real answer to the question posed in this thread is Mike D'Antoni.
Kobe Bryant, the superstar for the Los Angeles Lakers, who grew up in Italy during the height of D'Antoni's European career, sites D'Antoni as the player he loved most growing up as a child and Bryant chose to wear #8, D'Antoni's old number with the Olimpia Milano during his early career with the Lakers.
I wonder if that's the real reason he switched to 24...

The real question should be why do so many think that he tries to be like jordan, but not many in the league can do a thing to shut him down? IF you think what he does isnt on par with mike's game then lock him up.
Every player emulated their favorite players when they played ball from the schoolyard to the pros. I remembe many times during the MJ era when playing ball outside people/myself going up for a dunk yelling out "Jordan". With Kobe coming into the league as a 17yr old kid I would expect him to emulate somebody.
Just because he picked the best ( who so many have) and was able to pull it off enough for there to be debate is amazing. Would this be a discussion if it wasnt the case?
Now I'm not enough of a homer to admit the mannerisms were a bit much but ,I dont ever even remember Jordan complaining about it so why would anybody else. In fact that may have been his best business decision due to many missing that MJ type presense in the league. No different than what Lebron is doing now in his interviews.
Kobe Hate lately?

Its probably the MJ-mannerism thing. For MJ fans to see those mannerisms from a then-young punk named Kobe was a bit too annoying to handle I guess.
I've got no beef from Kobe copying some of MJ's moves. But did he ever acknowledged that? I read somewhere that in one interview he idolized magic. Did he mention MJ? Was he disrespectful because he didnt acknowledge it?

LOL @ "those don't belong to Jordan, they belong to the game."
How about NOT. Kobe has done many VERY specific things that Jordan (and only Jordan) has done in NBA history. Like dangling one leg out while slightly hopping while holding the gooseneck and turning a bit after a shot. ONLY Jordan has done this. Don't give me that "Jordan took these things from others" -- maybe if we were talking about general moves, yeah, but this sort of stuff is specific. I can cite other examples. Eyes closed FT's for one. Tongue out on drives for another (he did this for about 2 years but stopped a few years ago). The fist pump after a game-winning/tieing shot. There's a lot more...
Those are Jordan's, not the game's.

Kobe has stolen Jordan's off-court philandering, locker room venom, and most importantly, suppression of his race (but not as good as Mike tho).

Find a video. It's the pump and hold that Jordan popularized. For all we know Steve was shaking his fist and didn't hold the pose like Jordan did vs. Utah in '97. Also, it's more about the pattern of behavior with Kobe -- like I said, there are a dozen specific things he's copied. At what point will people get it through their heads that that's a bit different from another player happening to do ONE thing in ONE instance?
No logic...

So in essence, we're boiling down to David Thompson (who is the player MJ patented his game after) copies, right?
I don't like the term copy for this thread. I think patented is a better term. Jordan patented his game after David Thompson and Julius Erving. Kobe patented his after Jordan and a couple others. Both added their own elements to their games to make themselves different.
I think the word you're looking for is patterned.
