OT: Tom Petty Rocks!

I enjoyed the halftime a lot. Real music. Sounded good.

No nipples or gyrating or sampling.

No Keith Richards or Mick looking like they crept up out of the crypt. They sounded older than they looked, I thought.

Tom Petty's group was great for that setting.

Nope, just old and mellowing out, Dat.

I mean I liked Pink and I did look at Janet's titty. That's all good. I did enjoy Prince last year. The one I HATED was the Rolling Stones the year after the wardrobe malfunction. They were awful.

I just like the lyrics to Free Falling and Won't Back Down and I've got enough kids to not worry about my sexuality.

I know the idea is to appeal to corporate America and the older set, but I thought after the first song it got better and better as the group relaxed.

Now tell me why you hated it, Dat.

Tom Petty is old as dirt and looked horrible, but he sounded great. If you closed your eyes, you'd have had a hard time telling whether you were listening to him live, or in studio. The guy is a pro.

I thought he was fabulous and picked a great selection of songs. And I actually thought he looked good - he's finally gained a little weight and isn't the walking skeleton he used to be. It's amazing how his voice hasn't changed a bit in all these years. And he seems so down to earth compared to the acts of past years.

We had this discussion during half-time. Tom Petty is sooo B-List. We all said that our kids would not be singing any Tom Petty songs when they get older. It was a very safe choice, and it was very boring.
The Prince performance was the best half-time performance ever.

I guess I'd be a considered a "Gen-X-er" and I enjoyed the halftime show. I'm not saying it was the best ever but I like Tom Petty. And I'm sure that there were more people watching who would recognize him instead of 50 cent or P Diddy. Just because hip-hop is popular here doesn't mean that it's like that everywhere.

I agree that they can't go to the 70's/80's well too often but I don't think he was a bad choice.

We must have completely different backgrounds, because I'm trying to think of any Prince songs our kids will be singing some day, and I'm free falling on it.

Tom Petty may not be a huge draw anymore, but he's done too much to ever be called B List, imo.

One of the best live shows I've ever seen was Tom Petty. I somehow knew every word of every song he played. His music has seeped into my brain and has become lodged there, as great songs do.

2 words...lip synching...He went back and forth between real singing and lip synching. For instance, the choruses from "Free Fallin'" were lip synched.

Alicia Keys lip synched, and so did that awful excuse for a performance by Paula Abdul.

Petty is B List. At best. But that's not an insult. He's not in Prince's class. Petty is a rock legend. Prince is a musical genius and an icon. To compare the two would be unfair to Petty.

my kids thought he sucked but I thought he was pretty decent

And I'm not a particularly big Petty fan. I have maybe 3-4 Petty
songs on my iPod which is an 80G unit that I now have up to nearly
5K songs on.

The stones truly did suck. Prince was decent...not a big Prince fan
either.

Paul McCartney was the best halftime that I remember.

My boys are soon 6, 8, and 12 and let me see what they can sing from Prince:

Like that one a lot, too.

"Party Man"

Good beat as do all of Prince's songs but my kids won't know it.

I know Prince and I think he's got a great body of work, but so does Tom Petty. And Petty does rock.
