Monta or Kevin Martin?

Post#1 » by KR4 » Fri Feb 15, 2008 1:59 am

This is hypothetical of course, but I got into this argument with some coworkers today who are Kings fans (I work in Sac)...but they thought I was lacking a chromosome for thinking that Monta could be even close to "K-Mart." Which leads me to the question...

Who would you rather have for the next 10 years; Kevin Martin or Monta Ellis?

Tell me I'm not crazy for taking Monta any day, all day.

Look at it this way, you're a homer and they're homers... there is no way to settle the argument. Hard for us to get a gauge on both players because we see Monta 82 games a year and Kevin Martin just a handful of times, same with them but vice versa. You can seek outside opinions from other fans but they haven't seen either enough to have an informed opinion. So with that being said... Monta of course. ;)

I watch a lot of Kings games since I'm up here. The main argument I have is that Monta has SO much more upside. Where it seems K-Mart is what he is...very good.

Just smile, and prepare to bump the Monta v Kevin thread in the Player Comparisons forum about once per year for the next decade.

I have friends who are from Sac and dont think Kmart is all that special.

He's real good, real efficient, and you can' say enough about his numbers.

But how often does he have an eye opening play that makes you take notice?

hardly ever.

I've seen him drop major points on us, get steals, etc., but i've never seen him dominate a game and just take over.

I've seen Monta have dominant plays, over and over again. Its the difference between star and superstar. When everyone knows who's gonna take the shot, but can't do anything to stop it.

Monta has shown he can flat out dominate.

I now live in Sacramento and have seen KMART who is a special player but for the warriors style of play Monta is the one I'd take because he is a better defender and PGs are more important than SG

There's no question in my mind that Monta Ellis is the superior player, both now, and in the future.

However, I think all this Monta vs Kev Mart stuff is stupid. Why should those two be pitted against each other?

I'd second that-and more because Monta has more total impact. Monta scores, yeah, but his speed creates a BIG problem-not unlike a big shotblocker or a few flashy ally oop dunks--gets in your head.

Monta has lately had a lot of games with 7-9 boards and he's a semi-PG who takes some load off Baron. Martin is more like J Rich but on a team where he gets to be the #1 go-to guy.

Plus add to it the fact that Monta just totally outplayed KMart head to head (both offensively and defensively) and I think you have your answer. Monta's versatility (he's a true combo) also gives him a significant edge. Sac fans have been overhyping KMart for a while now (yes he's a very good player) but right now Monta is off the charts. KMart is a star but so is Monta and he's currently playing at and is elevating his game towards the superstar level.

Monta can tank (this is the reality of sports) and KMart can certainly get back to the level that he's used to playing, but this the reality of what it is right now. Monta > KMart. Heck, right now he's better than Baron. Talk to me a month from now and we can revisit this again maybe.

Better than Baron WOW. He may be putting up betters numbers right now, but lets not get ahead of ourselves now. If Baron were to get hurt, there is no way Monta can lead this team. Not even sure that Monta can put up these numbers in another system.

Maybe a more interesting question: Monta vs. J-Rich. Amazingly, I think I take Monta.

My calendar says 2008, but thats more a February 2007 question ;)

Its been a while since that one... the Tay/Baron debate is a much better one IMO now

In other news, since January, Tay's +/- when Baron is out is in the positive...

It doesnt happen often, but when Tay gets more PT than Baron (like last game), he usually has a better +/- too.

The leadership factor... that still goes to the vet. That's about all right now... Tay is outplaying Baron on both ends of the court, and thats with teams focusing on him on both ends...

Although it's not likely to stay this way, right now Monta is the most efficient guard in the NBA. Last game he shot 18/27 (67%) and that was a little on the down side for him the way he's been shooting lately. It's hard to put anyone up against him (comparison wise) as he's been shooting the lights out lately.
