It was a dunk. Jesus Christ people, look up the definition of a dunk.
And besides that, who gives a ****. It was amazing and it looked like a dunk.
And don't give me that bs that Moon did the same thing, because moon hit the rim and it bounced up and fell back into the hoop. That's not a dunk by definition like Dwight's was.

That would be a throw.
Buddy, you attack the poster, but don't actually disprove the posts.
It would be a thrust as clearly defined in the dictionary
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/thrust
1: to push or drive with force
It applies to anything you move drive with force. including a ball or a space ship. thats the very first definition even in your own lookup. You just don't know how to read
As seen in this entry
http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/thrust?view=uk
It applies to the force itself created by an engine or a rocket. even after an engine is shut off the force or thrust does not disappear. the force of the rockets continue to push the craft into space.
You continue to be silly. I do however give you credit for consistency.

Does anyone think Dwight didn't mean to do his dunk as he did? If the pass wasn't thrown correctly he would have had to jump higher, and could never have got to the rim from that starting point.
I think he meant to do it as seen, but imagine if he actually got up there, realized he wouldn't get tot he rim and just threw it down?
Who says Dwight doesn't have a jump shot? lol

Definition lay-up:
NBA.com
A shot made from close to the basket off the dribble.
www.nba.com/suns/kids/jrsuns_terminology.html
Dwight didn't dribble the ball so that doesn't count
From Princeton.edu
a basketball shot made with one hand from a position under or beside the basket (and usually banked off the backboard)
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
Dwight Wasn't under or beside the basket so that doesn't count.
From Wikapeia:
A layup in basketball is a field goal attempt made by leaping from below, laying the ball up near the basket, and using one hand to tip the ball over the rim and into the basket (layin) or to bank it off the backboard and into the basket (layup). ...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lay-up
Dwight again didn't come from underneath the basket. He did not tip it in and he did not bank it.
So according to the NBA, Princeton.edu, wikapedia it was not a lay-up. But hey why let the facts stand in the way of a good story.
Definition of dunk:
From WNBA.com
A shot thrown downward through the basket, with one or two hands. Also: slam, slam-dunk, jam
www.wnba.com/about_us/glossary.html
Dwight was above the rim and threw the ball downward toward the basket. So that qualifies.
An NBA gambling website:
A shot in which a jumping player slams the ball down into the opponent s basket from above.
www.nbagambling.us/terminology
See above for why it qualifies.
From the NBA:
# Making a basket by stuffing the ball down through the rim and into the net.
hoopedia.nba.com/index.php/Common_Basketball_Terms
Notice that not one definition has said anything about touching the rim.
Thinkquest.org
Is a field goal made by slamming the ball through the basket from above the rim.
library.thinkquest.org/5028/basketballglossery.html
see above
From Princeton.edu
a basketball shot in which the basketball is propelled downward into the basket
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
do i need to go any further
So according to the NBA, WNBA, Some Gambling website, Princeton University, and an online dictionary the Superman dunk was a dunk.
So can we now drop this?

On the semantics of thrust you are wrong. I have already explained why.
Thrust is adding force. If no force is being add at a moment of time there is no thrust. It is that simple.
Hey, 1/3 of you definitions support your view. Be happy with that.

Of your quotes, this is the one that would seem to contradict your point. Stuffing (like stuffing a turkey) is pushing something into something else.
Is this the actual NBA official definition?

Why imagine? If you watch him in practice closely you see lots of dunks where he just throws it down either not touching the rim (look very closely) or only barely touching.

Thats exactly how he wanted to do it and it makes sense since Superman would never hang on the rim.

Was it Green or Gay that did a lesser version of Dwight's first dunk after he did it? Ha, that was pretty anti-climactic!
Rudy. Felt bad for him but knew he stood no chance in the competition.
Same thing with Gerald, no way he would come anywhere close to last season (which sucked).
Moon should've been in the final vs. Dwight, that could've had Jordan-'Nique status because Jamario had some great sh*t up his sleeve.

If Jameer's pass hits the floor a bit closer to the basket then Dwight doesn't jump so damn vertically and probably rips the damn rim down.
Either way, greatest sh*t I've seen since Vince, maybe J-Rich. But Dwight's creativity is 2nd to none.

Nice video, I hadn't seen that. Thanks.
Dwight is the type of guy you can feel good rooting for.

Ha, I was watching the competition with my wife. At one point they were interviewing Dwight and Gerald before the finals and I asked my wife which dunk she liked better - the cupcake or the Superman. At that point we know the contest was over...
This was the most enjoyable comp of the last bunch. Probably since Vince. Nate's was painful.
I do hope they get away from the gimmicks a bit though next year...

Okay....most people here and most of the "experts" agree it was a dunk. By virtually all of the qualified definitions provided from sources which cannot be questioned as to the English language, demonstrate that this was a dunk by definition at the very least. Proven, case closed...any further argument otherwise (after the facts have been presented so clearly) would be from non-Magic fans trying to diminish what the man did, or from the little "devil's advocates" attempting to explore the least popular route and not wishing to lose face, desperately hanging on to a losing argument. Some of you need not pursue a career in law. There is a time to admit you're wrong and get on with life. Sidenote: While there are many solid Rap fans, there have been HISTORICALLY (believe me, I had many a heated discussion with some years ago on this forum) a number who would argue that the cloudless daytime sky was a cyan, or an odd shade of green, rather than to admit that it presents as blue. They'll argue to the end that this is so...even after being shouted down by irrefutable evidence/proof by the vast majority.

In other words when proven wrong by your own supplied dictionary definition just make up another one out of your head.
thrust by every dictionary definition supplied is driving something with force. Doesn't matter what the force is. We thrust objects into outer space every year by force from rockets that are not touching the craft when they finally break the earth's atmosphere and thereby thrust into space. If you are too dense to realize this its no skin off my back. 78% of the people watching define what Dwight did as good dunk. If Magic, Olajuwan, Kobe, and a whole panel of judges along withthe dictionary define it as a dunk - you will always lose.
Incidentally as the ball comes down it is gaining or having a force added to it. Its called the force of gravity. So even by your own wrong definition you are wrong - just not thinking.
