Who cares about W/L, when you have a sub-average GM who's done nothing but intentionally sabotage the team.

Ehh i didn't feel like starting a new thread and all that crap but something i found interesting.

Magic franchise center Dwight Howard has taken notice of how teams throughout the NBA have made late-season additions before and after the NBA trade deadline. What Howard paid particular attention to was how Boston added power forward P.J. Brown, how Detroit pursued Dale Davis and Dallas' addition of Jamaal Magloire.

But Howard said he was fine with the Magic not adding any frontline depth, feeling his team is good enough to hold firm in the playoffs.

"We didn't need to tweak anything," Howard said. "We've got the squad that can win in the playoffs. We just have to focus on bringing the energy every night and defending, and if we do that we won't have to worry about adding any pieces. We have a good team here already."

He's an athletic, bouncy big man with great hands. Vazquez has excellent moves around the basket, a knack for crashing the offensive boards and a nice 15-foot jump shot. He is an excellent rebounder and a good shot blocker. His aggressivness and quickness leads to a lot of dunks.

POWER FORWARDS
Rank Name Ht, Wt - Age Interested Teams
1. Fran Vazquez 6-11, 230 - 22 Raptors, Knicks, Bobcats, Nets
Long, athletic Spaniard is a rarity

Povtak's report on the subject for the Sentinel has Dwight saying,

We didn't need to tweak anything. I like what we have right here. We can depend on ourselves. We just have to make sure we bring our 'A' game. It's not about tweaking. It's about us playing our best with what we have.

Seems Dwight agrees with Otis.

Great post Sfranklin. Sums it up perfectly except for resigning HEdo. Resigning him is a matter of wanting to spend the money. Won't send us into luxury tax issues.

I wanted to double check the chronology ...

I'll take your word for it because I can't be bothered tracking down the chronology. My recollection was that Fran was an Otis pick. Never seen anything to say otherwise. Like I said three times before I'd let the Fran thing wash except for Otis track record. He also gave me a glimpse of how he manages contacts with the whole email to Darko's agent thing. Many of you blame Cornstein but that was just blatantly slack. You want a player get on the phone and explain what you are trying to do. If he is that hands-off with a player that HE SAID he wanted then it begs the question of how hands off he was with Fran in not knowing the boy's character.

anyway its a very minor incident in the many Otis fumbles and mumbles.

Final bullet points for me:
- JJ is the only sole GM pick of Otis, so there's not much track record there

- Darko never returned SVG's calls, so there's certainly more to than publicly aired
- From reports Darko didn't do much to ingratiate himself to the organization (missing events, practices, etc)
- Both sides handled it in a poor manner, unless you simply want to bash Otis.
- Perhaps there were still sour feelings with Cornstein re: Fran.

Just a blog so it's just an opinion that happens to agree me. Doesn't hold any legal or argumentative weight.

http://simononsports.blogspot.com/2007/ ... icics.html

The Case: Mr. Cornstein after the recent signing of Rashard Lewis by the Magic and the corresponding lack of qualifying offer given by the Magic to Darko went off on a rant calling Otis Smith, Magic GM, a liar. He said Smith told him that Darko was a priority but he reasoned that because they signed Lewis this was obviously not the case. This was stupid enough, however according to rumor central Marc Cornstein and Darko are currently seeking a $10 million dollar contract for the 22 year old. According to rumor central the Bulls are interested in Darko however the $10 million dollar contract the agents are looking for are out of their range.

The Verdict: Mr. Cornstein you are in fact on some serious hallucinogens. First off, when a GM calls your player priority it does not mean that you are the #1 priority, that they will do anything they can to sign you. It means that they want you, but if you're going to be ridiculous then you can walk out the front door. Next 10 mill? You're client's resume includes a career best season where he put up 8 points and 5.5 boards a game. That's not good, despite the fact he's still just 22. Why would anybody with some semblance of a brain give you a $10 million dollar a year deal. Please NBA do something right and force Darko to take the contract he deserves, a rookie deal equivalent to a late lottery pick.

Bleh 118 million or 120 million. We both know you were nitpicking. He rounded it so big deal. on the other hand I might use his rebuttal. I like the idea of a don't give a crap notebook. Might use that a lot with attribution.

and magicmamma and Noles _ exactly what do you expect Dwight to say? Lets say we had made a move Would he say "we shouldn't have done anything"? nah he'd be excited. Its his job as leader of the team to both believe and encourage other team mates that the team is fine and controls its own destiny. Now all he needs is a GM that will do his job.

Perhaps on one the 3 factual inaccuracies.

1) 120 vs 112+
2) Unable to resign Hedo due to cap space limitations
3) 2 players using 80% of our cap space

The salary is 112, potential incentives - which I believe are in his final season, put it at the rumured total 118. That final year he because a whopper of an expiring, so we may never pay the full amount anyways.

Gato as I recall we had pages of debates on that whole Cornstein issue. There was nothing that indicated that Cornstein was not returning calls to Otis. Cornstein was Darko's agent. Darko not calling back is immaterial. Its how business is done. You talk to the agent.

What Otis did was slack and no homer argument is going to change it. Theres a way of doing business and it doesn't involve dropping an email that you were withdrawing signing him but still expect him to know you want him down the line. Its not good business protocol but unfortunately does mesh with a mumbling Gm that practically picks his nose on National TV.

Your argument on this has always been one of a Homer so I am not going to go back and forth like we did before. Suffice to say We both KNOW that had Cornstein been the representative of the Magic and Otis the agent you would not be defending the total lack of good business manners.

As for Picks my memory of it has now been confirmed by another poster that indicated Otis took responsibility for that picks and still backs it. Otis has squandered picks both directly and indirectly. Darko was a high pick he acquired that walked out for no reason but to give Shard the max. Frankly I'd even forgive a bad draft history if he had a better resume as a GM. Surprise but I thought he was awesome when he moved Steve O. I was one of those that didn't have a problem with the "in Otis we trust" cheer leading but he has now proved he deserves no such accolades.

The salary is widely reported to be 118 million. What difference does incentives make when the incentives are attainable? I already identified he was wrong with the cap but yeah the 118 million 0r 120 million is trying to pile on errors by nitpicking. His 80% was as he stated a way of expressing that a huge part of the cap would be eaten by contracts escalating on the books. That point remains untouched. You are merely trying to use imprecise mathematics to distract. The central argument is that Shard's contract swallows up a huge part of the cap and is the major reason we will be using MLEs for years to come. Try rebutting that. of course we know you won't because you can't.

Except it was the new head coach making multiple attempts to talk to Darko. What Darko did was "slack" as well, imo. Returning the call is common courtesy, imo. Him not doing that - as well the lack of public statements indicating that he wanted to be here - shows that he didn't care about being here, just that he got his paycheck. All I remember him saying was for his agent to do his job - which was to get Darko paid.

That's all part of the business of the NBA - don't begrudge him. I wish him well in Memphis and hope that he can shed the monkey on his back - that of the "draft pick bust" label.

maginno wrote:What Otis did was slack and no homer argument is going to change it. Theres a way of doing business and it doesn't involve dropping an email that you were withdrawing signing him but still expect him to know you want him down the line.

I would certainly think that Darko was not kept in the dark all season long. It would make sense (if you wish to think so) that there were discussions between Darko and Otis long before this and throughout the season.

My opinion is that things were fine between Darko and the Magic, until his 10/year was submitted and Otis played said "too high". Both sides stepped up the "negotiations" - Cornstein did so via the press and Otis focused on Lewis.

Otis essentially was forced between Darko and Lewis. I think he choose correctly. I fine with him changing his priority, if Darko was ever his #1 priority.

maginno wrote:Its not good business protocol but unfortunately does mesh with a mumbling Gm that practically picks his nose on National TV.

What logical relevance is his personal habits/speaking methods/etc .. if he gets the job done? If we win a championship and Otis does his interviews in a wifebeater, I'm cool with that.

Interesting that a personal attack against Otis comes out.

maginno wrote:As for Picks my memory of it has now been confirmed by another poster that indicated Otis took responsibility for that picks and still backs it.

A noted anti-Otis poster backed you up. If another poster backs up my viewpoint does it make mine more legit? The blog I posted agrees with my standpoint on the matter, does that lend any more weight to my points?

You have your feelings toward Otis, and you're happy with it. I've done nothing to sway your opinion. It's the same on this side.

As many times before, we've reached an impasse. We agree that we disagree.

Say good night Hector. "Good night Hector".

I bow out, and leave the last word to you, if you wish to make further blows into the wind (as mine effectively have been as well).

I'm enjoyng this season as well, I just think this team could be so much better if ppl in charge had the balls to actually make the right moves when they're needed. Glass half empty for life :wordyo:

Return to Orlando Magic
