If you think Nick that Biedrins did not have a huge impact on this game, and that it was all smallball you are missing a few screws.
Similarly, if you wouldn't call it small ball when Biedrins is playing with noone else who has any business playing PF, and we don't put any player on the floor over 6'9" whenever Biedrins goes to the bench...

crzyyafrican makes the best sigs, quite frankly

Biedrens isn't small. Harrington isn't "that small". Croshere isn't small. Harrington + Cro out there and Biedrens and Al arent' small. The key word is "all". That game was not "all small". I said that "it wasn't all small ball that won that game" and I stand by that. It was Biedrens battling Howard that made a huge difference in the outcome. We had only one strecth during the game when Biedrens went out that we were able to stretch the lead. Again, we get a good run or two when running small ball and we think that it always works, it doesn't. We need some bigs in the game to keep it balanced and we get killed by teams like Utah, San Antonio and probably now the Lakers if we go strictly small. Don't drink the koolaid. And BTW Croshere is 6'10'. Man, that koolaid sure tastes good though.

Smallball seems to have two meanings in this thread. I think folks are talking at cross purposes.
Some folks use smallball to mean those times when Nellie seems to forgo length in his lineup for no good reason: benching Goose or Gadget despite their ability to play the Nellie scrambling fast paced brand of basketball.
Other folks use small ball simply to mean the scrambling fast paced brand of basketball that emphasizes speed over size. Which again doesn't mean you can't have size, just that it has to be quick size, like Goose and Gadget.
Typically I use "smallball" for the second meaning, and "Nellsanity" for the first.

Smallball is both as I see it flop...
Smallball by itself is a great way to change pace in a game, and be extremely effective in short bursts. What most of us have a problem with is Nellie's ruthless commitment to smallball when our personnel has gradually improved to the point where they don't need a full time gimmick to win.
It basically guises the bigger, longer players into playing a type of game they are uncomfortable with. Most of them anyways.
Its great that we can run it, but it doesn't mean we need to run it non stop, especially when we are getting efficient young players who are looking more ready by the day.

I was at the game last night, congrats on the win.
I left at the beginning of the third quarter to grab a drink, and I came back a few minutes later and the Magic were down by 8. I was like WTF?!?
I've got Ellis and Davis on my fantasy team, and was hoping they would put up stats but lose...well, at least I got half of what I wanted.
