Next Warriors coach
Likely that Nellie will be gone as GS' coach before too long... my bet is after the 2008-2009 season. Keith Smart is the "designated heir," though of course Mullin and Cohan are going to have some say in that, as is the general state of affairs with the Warriors during the summer of 2009.
It's starting to look as though Nellie's "original" designated heir, Avery Johnson may be available... if Dallas fans ready to run him out of town and a potential quick playoff exit this season are any indication.
So, how would you GS fans feel about having Avery as the Warriors coach?

I'd love to see Avery come over here if he gets run out of Dallas.
Besides, Nellie probably owes him one for what he let him do to him in the playoffs last year. lol.

Avery has the reputation of micromanaging his point guards. He certainly did with Harris, and has even butted heads a little with Kidd.
While he would almost certainly be more Biendrins and Wright friendly than Nellie(it would be hard not to), I don't see he him working well with either Baron or Monta.

Yeah giberish, whatever else Avery can or can't do as a (admittedly young) coach, it does bother me to see too much instruction coming from the sideline during the game... the goal is to teach the guys during practice, and - for the most part - let them implement the philosophies and game plans themselves during the action. Avery had his team on a notoriously short leash before J-Kidd came around, but I haven't seen them play enough lately to see if that's changed now.

Yeah, I'd love to see LB turn Baron into a Billups type. lol. And Jack and LB, might see another Sprewell incident. Avery and Baron both know each other and I think that Avery (as an ex-player and a black man) would have a lot of respect from these guys and not only that, I doubt very seriously he would mess with the vets too much, especially if he were new kid on the block. I'd love to see him over here, a guy who actually cares about defense I'm sure he could teach those guys a few things along those lines. and I'm even more certain he would much better utilize our bigs.

baron aint turning into anyone. The baron we have now is the baron we are gonna get for as long as he is a warrior. And i'm happy with that, he is a top pg in this league. He is already 28, no coach is going to change the fact that he is a chucker of a PG. Luckily, he is our chucker... and a darn good one at that.

Exactly, that's my point and that's one of the reasons I would hate to see LB coaching over here. He'd wind up doing the same thing as Nellie, that's scrapping the entire team of rabbits and replacing them with a bunch of apes (the reverse).

Biedrins haters?
Wright haters?
I don't read every page of every thread, but my impression is that there aren't any.
Now Patrick haters are in abundance. I suppose one could play the Dampier card - big men take longer to develop - but by now, I'll trust Nellie's judgment since he's had him for nearly 2 years now.
Could he blossom somewhere else? Possibly. Was it wrong for the Warriors not to extend him for basically nothing? Probably, even though if we pay Monta and Andris and go into the luxury tax, every Patrick dollar costs us 2.
But do I expect him to be anywhere close to a top-half center in the NBA?
Nope.
But then, we haven't seen anywhere near enough of him to know.

I'm with turk3d on that one.
I think LB is a great coach. But the Warriors have worked long and hard to get a system and personnel that work together. Sure we need more impact from the bigs, whether that's the result of internal development, adding a player or players, and/or changes in how guys are used. But Larry Brown would be a 180, and our personnel would have to be shaken up again. Plus I like the Warriors as a fast-paced team and want them to stay that way.
Another possible option?
Marc Iavaroni, Memphis -- I was surprised to hear from a few executives this week that Iavaroni may be in trouble. He was the Boy Wonder last summer, when he topped everyone's list of available coaches. But I'm hearing his star has dimmed in Memphis. I can't believe he'd be released after one year, but folks say he's got an elitist attitude that's rubbed his players the wrong way.

Iavaroni come's from D'Antoni's coaching tree, and would bring some new ideas and approaches, while sticking with the fast-pace play that has been successful and enjoyable for the Warriors. If he loses his job this summer, maybe bring him in as an assistant and go from there.
Regarding Avery, I'm not sure how much weight I'd put on him getting along with Baron and Jack - who knows if those guys will even be here still in two years.

Anybody who likes our D League gaurds or French Trainwreck taking Wright's and AB's minutes = a hater...sanddude909 wrote:LF75 wrote:All the Biedrins-Wright-O'Bryant haters would panic if Nellie retired this summer.

Let me help you with this...
Biedrins haters=Wright haters=O'Bryant haters. The terms are interchangable, referring to anyone who exhibits any of the following behaviors:
1) Praises Nellie
2) Criticizes Biedrins, Wright, or O'Bryant
3) Does not believe that all three of them should be starting and playing 40 minutes per game starting at the moment of their arrival
4) Has any tolerance for smallball
I hope that helps.

Why did have to go so far over the top to try and make your point? Any tolerance for smallball? You're just being silly on every point...Everybody here knows we play nothing but smallball..We all know Wright doesnt even get 5 or more minutes most games..40 minutes? ...
Come on warrior dude...Is it really unreasonable to want to the warriors play tall talented players > D league scrubs and French National team rejects?..
Just try to take a deep breath
If you want Azu and Trainwreck out there for the majority of the game > Biedrins and Wright ? You are a hater of their games..It's really simple..Why be ashamed to admit it? Nelson's a hater..You drink the Kool-aid..Admit it an move on
