Why Scola 1x1 skills aren't used more often?

Post#1 » by dartherus » Mon Mar 31, 2008 8:30 pm

I ask this because Scola has great post moves, he has showed it against proven NBA players in FIBA tournaments before, yet in the Rockets this potential lethal weapon is very rarely used...

Against the Spurs...I saw a bunch of bricks being thrown from outside players, while I only saw the first 1x1 from Scola toward the end of the game...

Couldn't Adelman prepare more plays for taking advantage of Scola inside scoring skills, Landry could also help scoring inside, I guess..what's your opinion about this?

It would have been a gamble as the Spurs interior defense is one of the best if not the best in the league. Adelman would take no chance in allowing Scola play one-on-one against their interior defenders.

I think we are at the point offensively where we have nothing to lose. Our defense is missing Yao terribly right now. To a point where we need to score points and McGrady driving and kicking...or taking jumpers or iso or whatever he does its not enough. Alston is quite possibly the worst point guard on a good team in the NBA. Can't count on him for offense.

We are at the point where need to get easier baskets and Scola may or may not be the answer but its something we have to find out before the playoffs begin.

In the NBA teams double on post players pretty quick,so post moves have to be quick. Scola takes alot of time w/his fakes and spins. Yes they are very good, and against 1 defender extremely effective, but he got quite a few shots blocked by help defenders early on and I imagine the same happens in practice so Adelman may be reluctant to go there. And since Adelman prefers movement...
As in an earlier post about using Scola more,I strongly believe Scola will come back next yr w/an assortment of more "NBA" moves and will be even more effective. Not to mention Adelman will have the off-season to design plays that take advantage of what he's learned his players can do.
When you think about it Adelman has had to constantly readjust his offense. He was not w/the team at start of off-season so his type of players were not what Morey tried to acquire. He went into camp thinking Alston was gone and Francis would be his PG. Rockets 08.0 never made it thru camp. 08.1 was spluttering along. The growth of Landry and Scola starting to figure out the NBA lead to 08.2,w/Scola starting and Landry becoming 6th Man. The Jackson trade was 08.3 which looked really good until the hard-drive crashed w/Yao's injury, giving us our current 08.4 Rockets.

 Best post from you yet. Yao is the elite of the elite in international post play as well as in the NBA. Guess what Scola should is the best internationally but hasn't been given enough opportunities inside. Problem with Scola is that he has no vertical. He tries to do the same things 7'6" Yao does but can't pull off because he's freakin' 6'9" and doesn't quite realize that he needs to jump to compensate. But that's hard when 2" is all he can seem to manage.

I don't know. He gets blocked enough every game to give R.A. warnings not to call his name more often. Yao gets blocked also but not at the same frequency as Scola. Good post up players usually have speed, power, or skill (a combination of the 3) in order to be effective, and I dont know about you, but Scola doesn't really have any of those qualities. I wouldn't give him half the number of postups Yao gets but giving him a few a game to test the waters isn't a bad idea.

You forget Scola is a LOT quicker than Yao so he can maneuver himself in the paint with ease. The problem is, he sometimes over does it and gets blocked because the other player is reading his next move or gets called for a travel. Somtimes, he just takes is straight to the defender and eat his lunch. He's a good post-player, but he needs to slowdown sometimes.

No doubt he has the skills and talent to go 1 on 1 with a lot of bigs, but he's really hesitating and showing little confidence right now. Once he gets those back, I'm sure we'll get him on some 1 on 1 moves cause he's good with his little spin move and underscoop.

Scola is at his best when he can roll down after a pick and establish position or just make a diving cut. He's not a guy who you just plant in the lowpost, especially if he's being guarded by a 7' center...

Move him around the post and throw him the ball when he calls for it.

Somewhat but not by much. Yao can take the ball from baseline to baseline. One move is where he posts up and goes baseline for a quick under handed dunk. Doesn't do it much but I've yet to see Scola do something remotely like that.

FWIW, he had a pretty decent vertical meassured in a training camp before his draft year , above 30" from what I remember...

For instance, do you remember the USA-Argentina game in 2002, the first defeat of a Dream Team? Do you remember Scola blocking Jermaine ONeal? wouldn't some vertical would be needed for that?

Unless Scola has some kind of mild injury preventing him from jumping, I guess it's more a matter of the style of playinf he developed in Europe, than the absolute inability to jump.

I say this because in Euroleague he also had dunks or blocks showing good vertical, but in the majority of the games, he very rarely used his vertical, I guess that under FIBA rules, he didn't need to jump that much to be so effective...Could he be able to change it in NBA?
