That sucks SB, but way to be a stand up guy even when you weren't expected to.

I need some help. I think EE might have good knowledge about the subject but anyone else that does..........please feel free to give advice.

I'm thinking about buying my wife a piano for our 5th wedding anniversary (something wood is 5th year traditional). We probably only have space for a full upright. I'm willing to drop 3-5k. I'm guessing that would send me the route of a used. Any suggestions or things I should be considering?

You can never go wrong with a Steinway piano... It is like the Mercedes of Pianos. I know it is upscale but anyone who is a true musician would really appreciate it.

I just noticed your price range... you never know maybe you can get a good deal around the LA metro area. I once had a friend who bought a classic Steinway in a garage sale from an old lady in Dallas for only $ 2,000 when in reality it was worth much more. The thing is having the ability to pick it up and move it.

The Strokes huh..yeah they're a good band.

So yeah a couple weeks ago I posted about how I was looking for a laptop. I think I said I was going with the Macbook Air. But wow thank god I didn't buy it...one of my friends has it and he just doesn't like it, he says it's not all that great.

So I'm going with a Macbook now...probably a black one should be sweet

Hey thanks kobeaki for the insight awhile ago.

Generally, you probably want to do some research and start early, since it's a bit more difficult these days due to the changes in immigration laws.

TTC,

Steinway uprights are wonderful, if you can find a used one for that price. Yamaha uprights are very good quality for the price. Another brand that I would look into if I were you is Kawai. Unlike Yamaha's very bright tone, the Kawai pianos has a more dull or warm tone to them (a little softer feeling). Personally, I like the depressing moody, darker tones, so I'd go with a Swedish Malmsjo, but chances are you might never find one in this country.

EDIT: Clarification; Kawai's pianos don't have a dull tone, they're just short of being as bright as the Yamahas, which I find a bit too "spikey" sounding and lacking a tid bit warmth, low midrange richness and full-bodied feel.

Not sure if Weinbach makes uprights, but their grand pianos are awesome to play and they have a wonderful tone.

You should also look into used baby grands. Some people just want to get them out of their house and are thus willing to sell them cheap as long as you arrange for moving it...

Check Craig's list and recycler for Baby Grands! Let me know how it goes. I'm about to start looking, too. Need a piano at home again.

1. Steinway (Rolls Royce)
2. Kawai (better tone than Yamaha, more piano for the money, imo)
3. Yamaha (can't go wrong, but a little too cheery a tone for my taste)

Women never cease to amaze me.

You can pretty much get together with one and any other girl in the vicinity will want you. Everytime I have a girl around another asks me if it's serious and I end up hanging out with the 2nd one later too. I'm on #4 now in a row that tried to steal me(I'm single no need) from another woman. Now I have two more lined up for the same reason. I guess I have to thank the original girl for stalking me even without another girl around.

To me this seems totally unfair for any guy who's not with a girl already. (including me when I'm that guy) Although... what we all need is a hot platonic friend who's willing to hang all over us just to get the siphon going.

That should be a service.

CC, the benefits of being looked upon as alpha are amazing, aren't they? Not only do you get all that attention but you also become more alpha in the process. It's a spiral that keeps on spinning at exponential rates until you find yourself just having to get out of it or be that guy that picks up lose women at bars at age 40. Enjoy it until you one day hit your rock bottom. It may sound ridiculous but it truly became an addiction to me, and I had to go cold turkey one day. And wouldn't you know, just like magic, half a year into the celibacy, I met my wife.

yes, the spiral indeed. Weird how it happens, especially when you can relate with he have nots from experience and then it blossoms from something you are doing for the love(music) which isn't motivated by women. From Dork to Romeo.

Well I just came back from a good lunch date since writing that post a few hours ago. Wouldn't you know another girl I know saw me and my lunch date and invited herself to sit with us. After the first girl left the second asked if it was serious or if I was available. hahahah nice.

Yes, well. I'm down with serial dating until I hit rock bottom or end up Jack Nicholson. For now it's good to be the king

Erik Eleven wrote:SashAlex, for a longer stay like you mentioned — a two or three year situation — I don't see any other choice but to attend school and getting a student visa. You can do the three and six month visas for traveling and such, but you need to go back and renew them. I would strongly recommend against staying past the expiration date of any visa, as they will send you straight back home on the next attempt to enter the country. They'll also charge you for that unscheduled return flight.

I've dealt with this BS since 1994, so let me know if you want any specific help, like a good lawyer or whatever. My guy is expensive, but he won't take on your case unless he can guarantee you to get you the status you're applying for. I've seen so many people getting ripped off by lawyers, so be suspicious when immigration attorneys say they can work out a deal for you where their company would hire you et cetera. Many con artists in that field, especially here in LA.

I had an O1 visa for the longest time, now I have a green card, and will soon apply for dual citizenship. It's been one hell of a road to keep my status squeaky clean for all these years. Despite being broke as hell back in the day, I still paid for the attorney that handles all the movie stars for the biggest studios. Paid through the nose, bent over backwards and then some, but he got the job done, and there's no weird deals, simply cut and dry clean and legit.

How much ? :)

Phew-- kids.

Well, here is a lesson I learned today. Be sure that the kids have no access to any types of medications. ( not a new lesson, but I need to double check that there are not random 5 year old bottles around)

I have a box full of my old office stuff from my last job tucked away in the closet. I didnt even know there was a bottle of perscription allergy medecine in there.

Well, my middle child found them and started to eat them. ( he is 2) talk about a heart attack. I ran over to him.. fished what he had in his mouth out and then jammed my finger down the back of his throat until he puked violently, then rushed him to the ER.

Dr says that I got most of if not all of it out and he should be fine..........

. I need to go double triple check there are no more of these bottles or meds around.

phew

Reminds of something I did when I was a 6 year old. Dad was fixing my bike and he had some small ball bearings in his tool kit and while I was playing with them I'd put one in my mouth and suddenly swallowed it! :D

Dad called up the doctor and he made me swallow 2 bananas without chewing them so that it doesn't get stuck anywhere in my digestive track and later I also had to do something for the next couple of days to check that it came out of my system, which I wouldn't like to share here.

Well, if you're loaded, there is such a thing as an investor's visa. Back in 1998, I know they required investments (buying gear or other things for your company) of around $5K per month. That's America for you
