Did I call that?

I had it 114-113; 7-5 Calzaghe with Hopkins taking a good chunk of the earlier rounds. A lot of weak punches thrown by Calzaghe, just landed more than Hopkins.

Good call

Well I think Hopkins won but I can understand why people would score it for Calzaghe. Compubox said he landed more punches than anyone else and that in itself is an accomplishment and testament enough that he did enough to win.

Honestly this has been a kick ass day for me in terms of sports..

Yeah that Double-OT game was amazing.

Dan Rafael of ESPN had the fight 114-113; 6-6 Hopkins.
AP also had it 114-113; 6-6 Hopkins

MSN reports many reporters had it close or the same as those scores.

I love that ESPN had a running score of the fight during halftime of the Utah/Rockets game...

Yahoo is waaaaay off. Once Calzaghe figured out Hopkins straight right hand it was like a sparring session. Hopkins is great for 43, but he can't hang with elite fighters who are busy throught a round.

Hopkins wants to rely on that straight right hand and clinch and hold. He can't put together combinations anymore and he has no left hand at all.

Calzaghe controlled the fight with his left hand jab from the southpaw stands and his aggression. I had it 8 rounds to 4 for Calzaghe.

2nd half of the fight, Hopkins showed his age trying to pace himself and complained about low blows that didnt even take place. He took a 5 minute break from a low blow that didnt even happen.

He's 43 and was looking for some rest because Calzaghe fights every 2nd of a round.

Hi Blame,

Been a die hard boxing fan for 20 years. Favorite all time fighter is Ray Leonard, Roy Jones and Terry Norris.

I was heart broken in 1991 when Norris put the whippin on Sugar Ray. I felt like crying that night

Well that is cool... I am hardcore fight fan as well.

I remember seeing that fight as well... Leonard should have called it quits after Hagler.

It is always good to see people post here... you should post more often.

Agreed on Jones vs Calzaghe and Leonard retiring after the Hagler fight. I can kinda understand fighting Terry Norris in 1991 because Ray was still a solid (Not Great) fighter in 1989 when he fought Hearns and Duran.

But that 1997 fight with Camacho. It's hard for me to watch that 5th round. They have it on youtube and i can't believe he got stopped by Hector Camacho off all people.

God I hated Camacho...

I so damn glad when Oscar just beat him down after the Leonard fight.

Anyone who gives that fight to Hopkins is clearly not a boxing fan. Calzaghe did not predominantly outwork Hopkins, but he produced more action and controlled the fight. He out punched Hopkins by a 2-1 ratio and punches and connects. Hopkins looked worn out by the fifth round. Each round after that he was able to get in the occasional hard hit but nothing that was awe-inspiring. He got worked, and made himself look like a man that is well off his rocker in the post fight interview.

Britain prevails once again.

I thought Calzaghe won the fight but not the 116-111 HBO and that last judge scored. It was closer than that. Hopkins looks really good for a 43 year old but I think he should hang it up while he's still got something left.

BR, I think Jones/Calzaghe will be in Las Vegas if they were to fight, unless Jones really does want it in Cardiff. That would be interesting.

Yes... the AP,ESPN and Yahoo and various other people who cover the sport aren't boxing fans...

Hopkins produced the harder and cleaner hits and that is why I gave him more rounds.

Exactly the reason why boxing isn't popular anymore.
Because of people like you that read way too far into the fight. If they scored basketball like they scored boxing then would you give the win to the team (Team B) that occasionally scored but did so in spectacular fashion. Or would you give it to the team (Team A) that consistently scores and outworks the other team.
Team A is clearly the dominating team that works the game, but according to your rules Team B wins.
Boxing has become estranged from the rest of the sporting world because of idiots like you. I am a casual boxing fan and I know way more about the sport than other people. The average fan wants the fight to go to the person that controls the bout and looks more comfortable.

Boxing...basketball...boxing...basketball...nothing alike. One is a team sport. The other is a one-on-one contact sport.

Before I go on my tangent, this is all hypothetical. I'm not making fun of you or the fighters last night. Let's say you come at me at a windmill and hit me a few times and make contact with the front of your fists, but they don't hurt me. Then let's say I pull my fist back and lunge at you and connect with a haymaker that makes you noticeably dizzy and the fight is stopped and we're both still standing. Who do you think won the fight? Even a casual boxing fan should know that. This is where good hard clean punches come into play.

With as many grapples last night's fight had, I scored on cuts and punches landed. Though Hopkins opened a cut on his nose, Calzaghe did land more, although weak punches. In the end, I still have it 114-113 7-5 Calzaghe.

Now am I an idiot, unlike you the casual boxing fan?

Honestly why don't you think about what you are posting before posting a clearly biased and stupid remark...

Jeez... basketball and boxing... :nonono:

This makes no sense, boxing has always been scored this way. Ever hear of Willie Pep? He would win rounds without even throwing a punch, just purely on defense alone. It's not a points contest, you don't win the fight by throwing the most punches.

The boxing and basketball analogies is pretty awful. I agree with you that Calzaghe won the fight, but I could see the argument for Hopkins.
